Lyrics:
They say that these are not the best of times
But they're the only times I've ever known
And I believe there is a time for meditation
In cathedrals of our own
Now I have seen that sad surrender in my lover's eyes
And I can only stand apart and sympathize
For we are always what our situations hand us
It's either sadness or euphoria
So we'll argue and we'll compromise
And realize that nothing's ever changed
For all our mutual experience
Our separate conclusions are the same
Now we are forced to recognize our inhumanity
Our reason coexists with our insanity
But we choose between reality and madness
It's either sadness or euphoria
Billy Joel's official UA-cam channel features music videos, live performances, interviews, TV appearances and more. Best known for his first hit song, 'Piano Man', in 1973, Billy has written and recorded thirty- three Top 40 hits in the United States. He is a six-time Grammy Award winner, a 23-time Grammy nominee and one of the world's best-selling artists of all time, having sold over 150 million records worldwide. Billy Joel is the sixth-best-selling recording artist and the third-best-selling solo artist in the United States.
How is it this song never shows up on a greatest hits? Possibly one of the best songs ever written.
Wholeheartedly agree 👍
The Songs in the attic cut is far superior.
True though these days IMO for younger new music listeners it’s too pithy it’s like eating fresh baked crusty bread instead of a Twinkie
There could be a greatest hits album of non-hits 😊
Considered non hits*
“Summer, Highland Falls” (1976) is about manic depression. Billy Joel composed it during a transitional period in his life when he was back to New York after spending the previous three years in California. In 2014, he explained : “It was more about manic depression than depression. That song was about a relationship that wasn’t really working out. It was very disappointing […].”
The music reflects the highs and lows of manic depression. The piece has a musical piano theme : the left hand plays the “depression” part, going slowly up and down, while the right hand is the “manic” part, playing a bouncy bit. “It actually describes manic depression in the music,” stated Joel. AND IT DOES SO BRILLIANTLY❕
Many yearbooks have read the opening lines :
“They say that these are not the best of times
But they’re the only times I’ve ever known”
The piece is quite unusual in that the - ever so befitting - title appears nowhere in the lyrics and there is no chorus.
“Summer, Highland Falls”* might not have been a huge hit, but it has endured as a favorite for many ardent fans of the musician. 💚🎹💜
* Those “HIGH” & “FALLS” in the title make for the cleverest metaphor❕
I didn't know this about this song makes sense now thankyou for the info baci x
Well said 👍
The song was also written in highland falls New York in a bar called South Gate
It's either sadness or euphoria.
As a New Yorker, this song touches me deeply, as I reflect on my frenzied (but glorious) corporate days at the World Trade Center, then walking out one Spring day and deciding to go to Columbia Grad Film School--a decision which, literally, saved my life, as I lost so many friends and colleagues on 9/11. To their memory (their priceless smiles and laughter) and to never forget that dreadful day~
❤❤❤
Much love to you. Lost a friend. Almost lost a brother that day.
I am from Gold Coast Queensland Australia 🇦🇺 I can't even imagine how you can get past that fateful day I was still up watching the late news around 10.30pm and it came up breaking news as I watched it unfold I got full of fright and despair I had to wake my flate mate up to come and sit with me and watch in horror I didn't sleep that night still went to work the next day but we didn't get much achieved as we were all in shock and disbelief I still am sending big Hug's to you baci x
Your comment touched me deeply 🙏🏻
Totally agree
How does this song not have a BILLION views? Arguably his best.
Ikr
Maybe it’s because this song isn’t as popular as a lot of his other songs?
What isn't Mozart playing?
@@gloriasteele7938 Songs that aren’t as popular would be my guess.
@@ceilingfansclocksminecraft1226 Great Music..always confuses you. Its Either sadness...or euphoria?
Joel is a genius. The lyric is beautiful
Lyrically this might be one of his best songs. Musically, the simplicity and beauty of his rhythms and chords is amazing
thx for the insight
@@iansmith8263 bwahahaaaaa
Simplicity! ha ha ha OK... sure. Have you tried to play this on the piano?
@@challism yes, actually. And can.
@@challism Its either sadness....or the Piano playing!
So underrated. One of the best Billy Joel songs of all time. Untouchable.
❤️❤️🙏🏻🙏🏻👍🏻👍🏻
That is so freaking good. Holy Crap. I’m 50 and I’ve never taken the time to listen properly to Billy Joel.
It's an amazing song. I felt the same way when I first heard it many years ago.
Welcome to The Billy Joel Fan Club!
Humans of New York and Jack and Tabetha and Johnny brought me here to refresh my memory about this song. Thanks to you all for this little Christmas gift.
Yes, same here. Been too long since I've heard this beautiful song.
Me too ✋
Ditto :)
Here bc of HONY too. 🤣 I've never heard this song before though. It's pretty good.
One of my very favourite Billy Joel songs
One of his greatest songs
Billy Joel is one of the greatest musicians of our time
All*
His band is the music. He is just one of the band. But his ego got in the way
@@christopherkelly9985 But who wrote the music? He did
@@issorgmot8539 it was the energy emanating from the Lords of 52nd street that caused the creative energies to flow. I know Liberty & Richie. They told me how the creative process happened. Usually they didn’t have more than one or two songs when they went to studio. And Billy would write his songs under the pressure and duress of being in the studio. Yes he is a creative genius; and the unleashing of that genius never would have happened without the Lords. Hence he hasn’t written a song since 1993. Case in point. I rest my case
@@christopherkelly9985 i'm sure you know liberty and richie
They say that these are not the best of times

I can only stand apart and sympathize

And realize that nothing's ever changed
For all our mutual experience
Our separate conclusions are the same

You left out the ohs at the end
Trust me -- in MY case, it's my mother's...so I don't mind the mondegreen here. And, yes, this very well may be THE underheralded, underrated classic in Billy's written oevere (if there weren't already so many others that also could fit the bill).
Long time Billy Joel fan.. but this is the first listen for me. A truly fantastically composed song.
One of the best songs ever written, ever...
agreed😁
Wholeheartedly agree 👍
yup - i love all these comments ❤❤
The best Billy Joel song he ever made ❤️
completely agree
As opposed to the non-Billy Joel songs he made. ha ha ha
But I agree, this is a masterpiece.
yes ❤❤❤
Absolutely out of this world - been lucky to see Billy at MSG numerous times, living in Scotland and having bought all his albums in the 70s, it simply doesn’t get any better than seeing him “live” - the man is a genius
Am I the only one that seems to relate to this more and more as I hit my mid sixties. I always loved it and thought I understood it, but as with most things from my youth, now i know better!
Billy Joel is definitely one of the of our times
Of the many GREAT Billy Joel songs, "Summer Highland Falls" is my favorite.
Sind sie DER John Hammo?! Genau mein Lieber, unbedingt genau!
I love this song. Sometimes I dance, sometimes I cry, either way I know all the words.
Me too. I feel you.
When I was in the Marines we would sit around the camp fire and sing songs! This was one of them. You’re my home was another one! We all missed being home. Sometimes we cried too! Either way music has the ability to transport us, make us feel a wide range of emotions! It’s magic! ✌️❤️
Beautifully said.
@@salloprestiinvasion6557 I may be a bit late but welcome home!
First song I listen to in 2023. When Billy sings "they say that these are not the best of times, there the only times I've ever known" hits close to home as of late. Been worried and depressed about my future. I'm trying to pick myself up this year and better myself. I have a good job, a loving family, so why am I so unhappy and unsatisfied? On the other hand, there are sometimes I feel so great and fortunate about everything in my life. "It's either sadness or euphoria" indeed.
🌹Indeed and I wish you all the best.
🎉Happy New Year-2023, we're all in this together and we'll all get through this together in peace.
🇨🇦✌🏻🎶♥️✨🌎💫
I feel the same way. 60 years old at the end of my career, 500 days away from retirement and have what most would dream of. Yet I am feeling like I’m missing something at times. Great song here it’s therapy.
I hope this does not in any way cone across as patronizing. I'm about to hit 60. We (and the respondents to your post) are all busy looking back on our pasts. I have a number of regrets. Strained family relationships....
The whole "something missing" comments echoed within me. I remember that..."feeling" when I was about 19. A year or 2 later, I responded to Jesus's call to me. In all my imperfections throughout my life, that "something missing" has never returned. I guess you know where I'm heading with this, so I'll leave it there....❤
.."that sad surrender in my lovers eyes"......., that's just powerful.
The lyrics on this are both profound and insightful.
They're collective yet disparate
The lyrics..are Billy Joel's. Insightful, and always respectfully driven.!
The language is too clinical.
IDk what brought you here. My Dad used to blast Billy Joel on his old giant combination record player/8-track stereo when I was a kid. I find myself thinking a lot about him lately, even though he's been gone 14 years. I've only heard the live CD version of this song. Tonight, I heard the studio version for the first time. That's what brought me here.
Bar none, one of the greatest songwriters I have ever had the pleasure of watching throughout the entirety of a lifetime. This is magic. In my opinion: his best fuc..ng album.
I definitely agree. I've had phases where Glass Houses was my favorite, The Stranger, 52nd Street, and An Innocent Man, but ultimately this album is my favorite album by any artist.
My favorite album. Turnstiles is great
Yes Sir!
Turnstiles, Cold Spring Harbor, and Streetlife Serenade are all criminally underrated. I can find myself listening to any of them on repeat for hours on end.
I agree
Mine too!!
I agree - the early stuff is definitely totally underrated
Sorry, But this is the Best Billy, song Ever!!!!!
"The Boys" may never use this song, but I wish they would
I am thankful, however, that Billy gets the love and attention that he does in that show. He's very underrated
More like THE GAYS
One of his greatest songs 🩵
"For all our mutual experience
Our separate conclusions are the same"
This.
I come back to this song when I am down and it lifts me like sitting next to a camp fire.
came here from the Humans of New York post about a Macy's Santa - tremendous read and incorporates this song intimately
the shocking thing is that I'm a huge Billy Joel fan, have more of his music in my iTunes than any other artist, play many of his songs on the piano, and for some reason have never heard this song until today. wild
Anyone one else come here from HONY??? It was such a heartwarming story, I had to check out the song! ❤
Meeeee!!!!!!!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
BEST Billy Joel song out there!!!❤️
One of the best compilation by the great Billy Joel!
If there ever was a song stamped hard with his trademark style, it's this one. Outstanding💯
My sweet lord this song is simply amazing!
Here because Highland Falls is my hometown, and this is a gorgeous tune.
This song is great. It sounds so beautiful. It has great melodies
About bi-polar disorder. Billy considers this one of his best songs, like a lot of his fans!
This song is about bipolar?
@@mbells8804 Yes. “It’s either sadness or euphoria”. The line in the song that he mentioned it.
I've listened to Billy Joel nearly my whole life. My dad played him a lot as I was growing up and, quickly becoming a fan, I ended up playing him a lot. Somehow I completely missed this gem until I heard about 20 seconds of it last year on a video showing the difference in sound between a clean LP and a dirty one. I immediately sought it out and it quickly vaulted near the top of my favorite songs of his. It might just be one tiny notch below "Allentown" (my favorite of his), if not tied for first.
It is amazing how our life changes then at some point one of his songs means more to us all of a sudden.
@@LC_music_studio Most definitely.
Just got this album. Easily one of his best. Even the way he utilizes the piano tells the story of the words, with one part sounding beautiful and manic while the other sounding dark, rich and sad. Truly a genius.
Masterful piano work!
Thank you Billy! I like this song. This song bring me back my memories....
Definitely one of my favorite Billy Joel songs....I know all of words. And the piano is just great!!!
Yeah, I'm taking piano lessons, I've been doing it for four years now and I love it. I'm never gonna be as good as him, as hard as I try. He's that good. "Legends aren't born, they're made."
HONY brought me here. thank you Humans Of New York for allowing me to know this song 💕
One of my favourite songs from him. Song from a genius.
They don't write them like this anymore.
There is no other song to even compare this too. Billy is literally a Virtuoso! Thank you Mr. Joel ❤
I recall rocking this in my youth... if I'd only known how true the words were...
knowledge gained by reflection is still very valuable what ever happens ,
懐かしさと、人恋しい気分になります。
心に沁みます😊
Billy is so talented, his writing has such depth and his piano playing is brilliant
Been a fan of Billy Joel since I was a kid, and I never realized that he wrote this song, nor had I ever heard it. However I used to hear my parents play the Peter, Paul, and Mary cover of it from their Reunion album...if you haven't heard their version, I'd encourage you to give it a listen.
My very favorite Billy Joel album!
How does he make a piano sound like a river
I love reading the comments it's such a beautiful song
Isn't it? I enjoy reading the comments too.
Wonderful song+ yeah great reading the comments!💯👍😁❤
Fantastic composition. Masterpiece of work.🎉 Congrats Billy Joel , this is an absolute gem.
Whether it was Lafayette’s Music Room, the Ritz, Auditorium North Hall, or the Coliseum, Billy was always fantastic. Probably the greatest single talent in modern rock n roll music. Just awesome
This song goes to all the manic depressives out there
That’s gold baby ha!
This song applied perfectly to a relationship I had in the early 80s. Sadness or euphoria.
Another one of my favorite Billy Joel songs! Lyrics especially great on this song!
Yeah. This is my favorite song from him.
For me this and Iv'e loved these days are the stand out tracks from this great album .Been a Billy Joel Fan for almost 40 years and always wanted to see him live but he so seldom come to the UK by the time I've found out he's going to be touring here its impossible to get tickets.I see he is touring in the USA this year but I doubt he will be coming here anytime soon, if again. It was a sad day when he said he wasn't going to record anymore there just isn't anyone who comes anywhere near to his songwriting talent around now.
He will be playing at the Old Trafford football stadium on 16 Jun 2018.
He is Philadelphia PA I believe in May or June this year 2019. Airfare is cheap from the UK right now may be worth a trip
This is an incredible song from an amazing album. My overall favorite LP from Billy Joel.
JAMES STEWART... EXACTLY MY SAME 2 FAVORITES ... COMPLETELY AGREE!!!
Bloody beautiful
my favorite Billy Joel song!
The best song, from the best album.
Better than The Stranger or 52nd Street?. All of these albums in the late 70's are just awesome.
@@lordgarmadon2598 My personal chart is:
1)Turnstiles
2)52º Street
3)The Stranger and The Nylon Curtain
My favourite songs are Summer, Highland Falls and Scenes From an Italian Restaurant.
I think Billy is one of the few artists who has never made bad albums. But yes, the late seventies were undoubtedly his best time.
this song hits different
This is an amazing song that resonates within you
really fortunate to have grown up on Long Island and been influenced by the two greatest American songwriters and musicians Billy and Paul Simon. A legacy to be enjoyed forever.
Legendary
His voice is so good in this song..
Sure makes you cry...
Another one of my favorites. I started learning Billy Joel when I was a teenager. His first Album "The Stranger" every song and lyric on that album. I read the lyrics along with his music. Another poet musician genius for me.
My FAVORITE Billy song!!!!!
Billy Joel - simply awesome !
What a masterpiece
This was my song of 2020... Can't believe it's been four years since the pandemic
SUCH AN UNDERRATED ALBUM
Amazing artist!!
Sheer genius !!!!!!
My all time favourite
To this day cannot get through this song without at least a tear or two💔
Beautiful,realistic lyrics and sad.....
I lived in Highland Falls when he was writing for the Turnstiles album. There wasn’t much to do in town so he and his wife were pretty isolated not knowing anyone from the area. The song was supposed to reflect the ups and downs of his time there and also his career. I was playing at a restaurant in Fort Montgomery just two miles from his home he was leasing. His wife was talking to some of our band members and she said it would be nice if you guys come down and visit….Billy doesn’t really know anyone here. His spouse Elizabeth looking out for him wanting him to not be lonely and to be happy.
Do I know you? I live in Highland Falls and I'm a musician. I've lived between Orange and Rockland counties all my life.
Being a 16 year old, I can't really relate to this song from a lyrical standpoint, although I know that there are many who can. But, I have to say this is one of Billy Joel's finest compositions and I could listen to it on loop all day long. The piano part is extremely catchy and very melodic. Yet another masterpiece from Billy Joel.
Although you may not be relating literally to the lyrics, I imagine part of your attraction to the song is emotional. Good music, good art does that. It touches something deep inside. Even without the words, and often more powerfully with them. I think it's wonderful that you feel something deeply from this song. You sound like a sensitive soul. Over the years meanings may change but we continue to be touched by beautiful things. I'm 70. Heard this song 34 years ago, and still love it.
A total package song, lyrics, music and vocals. Has to be his best work.
1st concert I ever attended was Billy Joel after Turnstiles released. Saw him at a local university while a sophomore in HS. He played for well over 2.5 hrs for a crowd of 1,000 Great times
Anyone else here after reading the Humans of New York story about the Mall Santa and his son & the special connection to this song?
That story hit the feels so hard. ❤
A genuine troubadour
His voice is beautiful

One of my favorite Billy Joel songs. Back when albums were albums. It’s right up there with Summer, Highland Falls off Turnstiles.
