TL;DR Very similar to an old fable about lambs, a wolf, and an absent parent.
This reminds me of an old story of a bunch of lambs, their mother tells them that she'll be back soon and will give the lambs various signs that it's her, like knocking on the door in a certain order.
Every time the mother leaves a wolf shows up trying to be let in. The lambs say things like "we're only going to let our mother in" so the wolf dresses as a sheep, then "you're not our mother, you only knocked twice" as it gets closer and closer to tricking the sheep it eventually uses all of their clues and swallows almost all of them.
One lamb successfully hid and told the mother who got scissors and as many rocks as kids were taken.
She found the wolf sleeping by a river, cuts him open, and rescues the lambs, replacing them with rocks. When the wolf wakes up he is weighed down by the rocks so much to the point he drowns when getting a drink of water.
This is more or less loosely related, but I could see it as some version where the parent never comes home.

I don’t think this is about a story of abuse, but rather a story of a dad leaving his daughter. Notice in the song she goes “you said you’d be back in a hour” and then it progresses on to “you said you’d be back to tomorrow” and then eventually “by the weekend” and “by my birthday”. The father is telling the child that he’ll be back, but he’s basically a dead beat dad and never comes around. The parts where she says you look nothing like my father may be her denying that her father would ever leave her and her mother. By the end she’s opened her eyes and realized that the man that left her and her mother was exactly how her father was all along, hence the line “you look exactly like my father”

well, that's emotional abuse by neglect.
Still, the vibe of the song (all the whispering) does ring very much like more than just neglect to me.

I think this song is about an abusive drunk father.
"You look/sound nothing like my father." He's extremely drunk. He usually never acts like this.
"You look sort of like my father." He's not as drunk as he was and is probably in some sort of hangover.
"You're exactly like my father." At this point he now acts abusive either way. That's why she sounds so sad.
"You said you be back in an hour/tomorrow/for my birthday" He keeps promising he's going to stop drinking but he never does.

That's what I was thinking too except for instead of covering one incident where he becomes sober over the course of the song I considered the move to "sort of" and then "exactly" to mean that the previously unusual behavior has gradually become normal. So while she is separating this scarier version of him at the beginning by the end the two versions have merged in her mind to the point where she doesn't see him at all the way he used to be.
In my interpretation this is advancing alongside the "back by" parts of the song to show how it progressively gets worse and more frequent.

    • @SartorialDragon
      @SartorialDragon 2 роки тому +3

“you look sort of / you're exactly like my father“ is also very common in how survivors of child abuse go on to perceive their partners / friends in adulthood. Either because they inadvertedly pick abusive people because that feels familiar, or because the partner isn't even abusive, but small behaviours can trigger a memory that leads to confusing the current person with the abuser.

I’m pretty convinced that this song is regarding a girl who had an abusive and/or drunk father who ended up leaving her. She ends up with a guy she thought was sweet but slowly he turns out to be just as abusive and/or drunk as her father, leaving her alone yet again.

"you Look like my father"and "you sound nothing like my father" Those two parts in the song sound like extremely angry and disappointed and kind of like that and then when she says" You look exactly like my father" and "You sound exactly like my father" She sounds scared and in disbelief It has some real emotion to it and it's a great song overall

All of these comments are relating this song to parental issues which is probably the intended meaning of the song, but I've been fixating on it lately because of how well it portrays the feeling of psychosis, at least in my experience. It just reminds me of being an isolated, hypervigilant insomniac fifteen year old awake at three am or left home alone all day, hearing random noises around the house, seeing hallucinations of strangers outdoors and indoors, having this horrible feeling of fear in your stomach that gets worse and worse no matter how hard you try to ignore it, all while completely alone with noone to help. And then when someone does show up, you're so paranoid and afraid you're not even sure if they're real, which is the only thing the whole "you look exactly like my father" thing could ever remind me of. Sorry for writing this weird vent of a comment, I'm just having a bad night right now and seeing as no one had related this song to something like this I figured I'd suggest it as an alternate interpretation.

i believe this song to be about a child who is constantly being left home alone by their angry, drunkard father. everyone else's takes are very interesting and figured i'd share mine!
the "whats that? whos there? whats that sound?" whispers are the things that people (especially those with anxiety disorders) commonly ask themselves when they are left home alone. this child is left home alone so often that their father doesnt register to them as their father... more of a stranger with familiarity. "you said youd be back in an hour/by tomorrow/by the weekend/for my birthday" a person like this father will give (often inaccurate) estimates of when they will be back when they leave to go out. and finally, upon the fathers arrival home, hes so plastered that he cannot open the door to his own home. he screams at the front door after shaking the latch, "let me come in;" a cue for the child to get up and let their father inside. he will also probably be more prone to breaking things in this state.
this is extremely particular, but i think kids who grew up with a parent(s) who was this way can easily relate and understand. i find it really interesting that the artist may have gone into such a specific part of child abuse with this song :]

I think this is about a step dad who becomes like the daughter's abusive father.
    REASONING BEHIND
In the beginning it says, "you look nothing like my father." Indicating that things started off really well when the step father moved it, earning her trust as they hung out more. The little whispers- to me- are the doubts swirling around in the daughter's head about trusting again and how it'll somehow go back to the way it was, but she ignores them. Then, things start to get gradually worse as she says "you'd said you be back in a hour" I can only relate this to the step father going out and having a few beers only to come back drunk and mean, leading things to progressively become worse. "You look sort of like my father" could express the same behaviour she is relating her step dad with to her actual father about drinking and saying hurtful things. The "you said you'd be back in an hour" to "you said you'd be back by tomorrow" could express the drifting apart of them and how she is barely able to recognise her step father compared to her biological father. Next the voices in the background and how they say "smashing glass, scratching, thrashing" could be the fights going on between the daughter and the step father or the mother and the step father. Then we hear "you look exactly like my father" leading her to finally realise that even though a new person was welcomed into the home to take the place of her old abusive father, nothing has changed. We also hear that she says "you said you'd be back by the weekend" and "you said you'd be back by my birthday" which could now turn into how the daughter is referring to her biological father and the promised he made to come back to her, but was never followed through and since her step father his like her actual father, she feels as if she is talking to him- bringing in the questions of; "You said you'd be back for my birthday- why are you here so soon?" It's more of like she is angry that her "father" has returned so soon instead of not following through and not coming back at all. And finally, we hear a verse in the background that says, "little girl, little girl, let me come in" this could be referred to as the step father and how everything has repeated and he's asking; "why won't you let me bond with you now?" It could also mean a new step father coming in and asking; "why won't you let me bond with you?" As a way to repeat the circle from beginning to end all over again.
But this is just my opinion of what the song means.
Please share what you think!! ^^'

I actually have another theory as to what this song could be about.
A dog is left alone, abandoned in the middle of nowhere. Convinced his owner will return,
He refuses to open up to anyone else. *”You look nothing, like my father. You sound nothing like my father.”*
It’s been days since he was left behind. *”You said you’d be back in an hour!”*
his owner’s scent becomes weaker, and he becomes confused.
*”You look sort of like my father.”*
It’s been weeks since his abandonment, as he waits for his owner’s return.
*”You said you’d be back in an hour, you said you be back by tomorrow.”*
As time passes by, the dog witnesses a lot of bad things happening.
*”Who’s that? Smashing glass. Scratching, thrashing, screaming my name.Twitching, threatening, and shaking the latch.”*
He wonders: *”Dad, is that you? Are you back?”*
It comes to the point where his owner’s scent is almost nonexistent, and is no longer recognizable.
He decides to open up to approachers. *”You look exactly like my father! Your exactly like my father!”*
He remains in his spot, for years maybe, losing hope.
*”You said you’d be back in an hour,”*
*”you said you’d be back by tomorrow,”*
*”you said you’d be back by the weekend,”*
*”you said you’d be back for my birthday!”*
The Lyrics *”little girl, little girl, let me come in.”* could represent what he witnesses, or approachers trying to get closer to him.
Edit: I just realized this story sounds a lot like Emi’s from lookism o3o

There are a couple things here that I would disagree with, but overall this is a really cool new interpretation! I like to imagine for this case, that it is a very large dog, who looks more and more raggedy with time (lack of his owner meaning nobody can come to clean him if he gets messy and if he's out there for a long stretch of time, then yeah, he'll get messy fast) making him look more and more wolf-like, matching the title of the song!

I honestly think this is a song of someone who was abused by their father, the few times he was home, and their partner or someone came to fill in that void in their life. At first their partner was a healthy, supportive person "you look/sound nothing like my father", then it gradually changed "you look/sound sort of like my father" and then it got to the same (or even worse) level than her father had been "you look/you're exactly like my father".

  • @alexandraforst1773
    @alexandraforst1773 5 років тому +9

I think this song is about an abusive father who goes out to drink way too often and way too long and also often stays out for days at a time. When he comes home he's drunk and like another person, or like a wolf/ wild animal. The daughter sees this 'creature' coming closer to their home unable to see her father in this drunken monster. As he gets closer (in a very loud and disturbing way, just like a ferocious beast or wolf) she has to realise more and more that this terrifying creature looks a bit like and then exactly like her father. Showing that she recognizes her father but also that she doesn't want to accept or acknowledge that this wolf-likely-behaving monster really is her father. In the end the father sings in a disturbing way that the little girl should let him in, demonstrating that in his drunken state he doesn't see his daughter as his daughter but just as a little girl, indicating with everything else that he wants something else from her other than a goodnight kiss... A literally terrifyingly good song!

Stars, this is the first time I'm listening to this after leaving my mother's house permanently almost a year ago, and . Man I was not prepared for how heavily it would resonate with me now. My mother wasn't physically abusive, but she was very emotional abusive, manipulative, and neglectful. The "you said you'd be back" parts are just. Ghfhfhfhdbfhf since. I remember so many days where she said she would do etc etc with me, then when I asked a week later she would go "We'll do that soon" and the cycle repeats, her never following through with what she said and only laying in bed or watching TV all day, every day, not even caring to make or even buy food, leading to several days where I simply wouldn't eat. Let alone all the manipulation, lies, and gaslighting she did to me. I'm glad to be out.
If any of y'all are in a similar position of living with an abusive parent, just keep holding on no matter what, I promise to you all it does get better and one day you'll be able to escape.

sometimes it's hard to listen to this song without crying. lost the gamble on that this time lol
my volatile and neglectful dad just sort of up and left one day. not even just packing up and getting a divorce, systematically moving out over a month by putting all his stuff into trash bags, pretending to have overtime while he moved his stuff to his mother's house. staying out later and later and saying it was just easier to drive to his moms house and sleep there because he was tired and didn't want to drive far on the road like that. then one day he just didn't come back.
he frequently ignored my texts and calls, no matter how desperate or concerning they were.
once i had a very intense spat with my physically and verbally abusive mom, so I asked my dad if I could sleepover without telling her because i didn't feel safe.
he said okay and said he'd pick me up at 12am when he got off his shift.
so there I was, a little girl not even in her MID teens, bag packed, on the sidewalk, in the dead of night, without my mom or sister knowing I was out there.
and I stood out there until 2 am.
he ignored my texts and calls. he didnt even officially call it off or refuse. he just, didnt show.
the next day, he didnt even acknowledge it. in fact, if i remember right, i didnt get a direct call from him for the rest of the week.
i used to only think about how he just ditched me, but now that I'm 20 i realize i literally could've gotten kidnapped or some shit because i was out there in the middle of the night waiting for this asshole, and didn't tell anyone i was leaving because i was fucking scared of my mom. i could've died that night if anyone was out there and wanted to hurt me.
he died when I was 17 and i didnt even consider coming to the funeral until I realized a close cousin was coming too.
i should have listened to my gut and never come.
it sucked, I didnt even cry and it fucking sucks to hear people talk about how your dad was "a father to them" when he couldn't even be a father to his *actual kid.* it _fucking_ sucks.

"A young girl is playing in her bedroom when she hears her mother call to her from the kitchen, so she runs downstairs to meet her mother. As she's running through the hallway, the door to the cupboard under the stairs opens, and a hand reaches out and pulls her in. It's her mother. She whispers to her child, "Don't go into the kitchen. So what I get is the father is abusive. The voice is the son/daughter past self trying to figure out what happened to him also the dad. This is from daughter/sons point of view. And the mom abandoned them. The father might of went downhill. Then the kid sees how much of a monster the father really is.

I think it's about a disorder that makes you think your parents aren't your parents... like how when she says you look nothing like my father she's not sure who it is but still let's him in
And in the end when she says you exactly like my father then she is cautious and when it says "You said you'd be back on an hour" it means she saw her father leave saying he'd be back in a hour so her dad then comes back but she thought he'd be back in an hour

They wear a good mask in the beginning 😪😪😪 My take is a manipulative abuser that plays on a vulnerable woman's absent/abusive Dad issues to manipulate and abuse....Reality sets in for the woman...You are exactly like my father 😪😪😪 I lived this...My best friend sent me this trying to wake me up 4 years ago...Only realising now the shit Ive been dealing with 😭 We attract what we had in childhood if we dont heal the inner child wound...Fuck 😪💔🤍 I miss you Ali xx
