    I love Moonbyul and I really like her music, but I honestly prefer the songs that she writes and produces, when the lyrics are a little hard to understand and weak, you can be sure that she didn't write them, Byul is a excellent lyricist, not by chance she is the most accredited female idol in history with more than 120 songs. And by the way is doesn't show much here, but Moonbyul loves to explore with all kinds of musical genres, as shown in her latest album, where she even has rock songs.

    Moonbyul’s vocals are my favorite in Mamamoo, and Absence is such a good example of that, and by the way, Ddu Ddu Ddu is a b-side from the same album as Lunatic and the song with Seori

    Also, I realize that "traditional kpop fan" wouldn't like this because mamamoo is NOT traditional kpop. It's good music but he's looking at it through a kpop lens... I can see why I don't agree with the "kpop fan's" opinions as much as I thought

    The thing about Moonbyul and pop ballads is that she does love generic pop ballads 💁‍♀
    Since she was always sidelined as "the rapper" she uses her solos to work on the vocals she wasn't able to in their group projects, and that includes melodramatic romantic movie sound tracks.
    I love her songs because I love her and I love her singing, but I also don't think any of it is earth shattering (at least not yet). I love it for what it is.
    Moonbyul tends to dare more visually and conceptually than with her music.
    I think that she does have a lot of potential to grow as an artist, but she has to dare to move out of her comfort zone.
    I'd love for her to take some time to sit down and take her time with her next project (after the comeback around the corner), not to rush into the next and the next.
    In the end her best songs, musically, to me are: Shutdown, Love & Hate (I'd love for her to do a new version of it), Mirror, Synopses (why are her intros so good), Absence, Moon Movie (I also need an updated studio version of this one), Like a Fool and Satellite (again, her intros).

    The "problem" of 6equence album it's was build like a full love story, from start to end. So that's normal Lunatic and Ddu Ddu Ddu are full of things...
    And Moonbyul was always frustrated to be the rapper, so I understand why she want to sing. And honestly Lunatic is such a banger and ddu ddu ddu is fantastic.

    also it's funny that I like the"hater" more than the Kpop fan's opinions. Maybe because he points out stuff, he is paying more attention or knows more about music? He gives better arguments about why he likes or not some stuff.

      He never explains why… “the production is good” why was it good, what made it good? “The instrumentals were good” why? Which ones? What did they do that made the song good/bad, boring/fun? He just says buzz words without following up with any kind of music theory to explain his opinions and arguments. He’s entitled to opinion of whether he likes a song or not but knowing about music…I’m not sure.

    • @greenwickr
      @greenwickr 3 місяці тому

      @@nekograce7914 I happened to watch a few of their reactions out of curiosity because I saw the way Kaz would explain what he wanted more out of the production, so I'd recommend maybe the IU one, and perhaps Youha although I haven't seen that one yet. I just heard him praising her so I assumed it would contain a lot of positive points about what he likes. You've probably already seen the Mamamoo one before where they both gave immense praise to the tracks they listened to. From those you could possibly get an idea of their preference in choices in music production.
      Perhaps not as much here, but there are reactions where he specifically points out details that he likes or dislikes and what he would prefer to happen with the production. It's really interesting to hear about the details that average listeners like me would never have noticed.

    To be honest, we could say the same about most Kpop artist. B-sides are much better. RBW doesn't really help her to produce better title tracks. The real Moonbyul her b-sides. This is the sad reality of Pop music. You need to pick generic dance pop for title tracks. I love all of these songs, but I wouldn't put them in the TOP10 Moonbyul songs list.

    I struggle with your reactions that i have seen (not many of them). I find you are very critical, and are picky on the arrangements but feel very inconsistent. Sometimes its too long, sometimes its too short, then you come up with its too dense, or too messy. It feels like you are considering yourselves experts on music structure, pop music, etc. Then suddenly, its critical of the lyrics, which you had not clearly paid attention to before. It almost feels like songs in a certain style, have to fit a certain structure for you you to approve and say how great it is. I can understand if this is a style you didn't like, or structure you didn't like, but you are saying that it needs to be done differently to be much better. At the end off Ddu ddu ddu you were even trying to be the producers for Moonbyul? What are your credentials for producing songs? Or even performing? I know one of you was regularly saying they were angry after the MV's, I think its fair to say that i was also getting angry at your reactions to them.... it felt inconsistent. I should suggest you turn the volume down if you think its sonic-ally challenging.

      To be fair, I don't think they're the first or last to think similar things about Byulie solo music. In the end, it's simply their perspective on how the music in their opinion could be even better, which could appeal to a wider audience. It's also reflective of their personal tastes so there's no need to be upset over them being honest about how they feel about what they heard. At least we know now that they prefer some moderation: not too much to be sonically assaulted, yet not too little to be fatigued by blandness or repetition. They also really appreciate dynamic production (not necessarily increasing in quantity of sounds, but interesting and unexpected/unpredictable use) and of course captivating melodies, I think.
      Byulie solo work is always fun and enjoyable, but the production isn't groundbreaking, apparently. Their main problem with the selection of songs was usually with the arrangement from what I see.

  • @shir.t
    @shir.t 4 місяці тому +6

    I mean I get where they're coming from in that her music does sometimes sound generic or "safe". That may be somewhat true in like the grand scheme of "kpop" but for her specifically, as a solo artist, being able to showcase her vocals was part of the "risk"... She is trying to define herself as an artist that is able to do more than just rap because even though she has a great voice, the general audience mostly know her as a rapper. She's setting up a baseline for her solo carreer. It's just weird that you would be picky over things like her wanting to showcase her vocal prowess, like yea you know she has a good voice but she can't sing a generic pop ballad if she chooses to?

    • @greenwickr
      @greenwickr 3 місяці тому +2

      I imagine they might have been more open to it if it were a bit more dynamic I guess...to be honest, I didn't feel much enthusiasm for DDD initially too because it felt so plain to me. The track is fairly basic, there's not anything crazy like harmonies or insane vocal riffing to offset the repetition of the refrain, and the instruments aren't really doing much to compliment the melody. Nice enough, but blandness enough that I would never have listened to it again if it weren't a song from Byulie. I think I really empathize with their unenthusiastic reaction to pop ballad, but I guess in the end it's also affected by preference. The production in many ballads is just difficult for me to wait through.
      That's why ballads like Refuge were a pleasant surprise to me because I quite enjoyed her cover. I'm very curious to see what they would think of Take Off, and her future band focus music too, as well as songs like Memories and LAF, Attention Seeker etc.
      Basically you don't need to feel that bad that they felt frustrated with the production/arrangement of her music. They listened to the details in the tracks and spoke honestly about not agreeing with the decisions made.

    Honestly, the reason I was drawn to Moonbyul's music is probably for the same reason I was drawn into Taylor Swift's (though I'd generally disagree with you on the lyrical quality; as a fan of both, I think they're both storytellers, and I think it's often difficult to take a few lines of a song, or even a song on an album or an EP - that's more done stylistically as a story, and judge it fairly without considering the whole), so perhaps that's a fair comparison.
    I think a lot of what Moonbyul is "trying" to do is challenge ideas on gender and sexuality, and ideas of what a woman should do, how we should behave (in terms of dressing androgynously, singing explicitly about women, doing a typically "masculine" song / concept / dance and video, singing at a lower pitch), which I think very much does do as intended, especially for how misogynistic and anti-LGBTQ+ South Korea is still widely reported to be, and I think otherwise - she's largely been stepping into being a singer after a loss in confidence for a long time - and I think she's largely succeeded at that, too. I think she's come a very long way in still a pretty short time as a solo artist.
    From my perspective, I don't particularly mind "corny" or more "generic" songs, so long as the execution is good. There are a couple Moonbyul songs (as well as Taylor Swift songs) I don't get along with, but broadly speaking I find them both easy to listen to, and I think they've both got vocal tones that I would find hard to replicate as a trained singer, which is something else I tend to look for. I don't generally tend to like videos that I feel like are critical to individual elements of a piece (it's just not the style of reaction video I like to watch) - BUT I think it's also nice to see people give honest opinions and critiques, so it's been nice to see you guys react to Mamamoo and Moonbyul. ♡

    i think a lot of her music is pretty much a call to people who feel side lined or "gifted a role" that they didn't necessarily want. byul is magic at breaking norms, whether they be gender roles, or the image people have of her as an artist. with regards to songwriting, she's one of the most credited artists in korea. about 200 titles under her belt at 33, and she's a titan. i agree that some of her music might not punch with everything you'd come to expect, but not all good tunes need that. her music makes a lot of people feel great and at the core of it, i feel that as an artist, that is what she wants to achieve anyways. if you knew her story, i'm pretty sure you guys would understand where she was coming from too. you guys are saying that a lot of her music isn't taking enough risk, but coming out as a soloist as a singer after being stereotyped as a rapper.. every song she releases is a risk.
    kaz, translations are iffy. it might sound cringe to you after being translated, but there's a lot of nuance in language. call me nuts, but i feel like kaz is trying to pick everything apart and atom is under peer pressure to hate everything lol. also man, what's with your echo levs.

      @@MooYT_ I understand that their reactions here aren't really endearing them to anyone who is more sensitive about opinions regarding her music, but I assure you that they don't hate either music or Kpop 😂 it's just looking that way when they encounter production styles that they don't agree with. They were singing immense praise for the group work in Mamamoo reactions, as well as others like the IU reaction! They always praise vocals they like too, so I think it's more that they aren't afraid to be honest about what they both like and dislike.
      Most of the time, Kpop fans are accustomed to people agreeing with if not outright liking their favorites all of the time, so it's uncommon and difficult for them to see and still be able to accept opinions about the music that aren't favorable. People normally watch reactions because they want people to praise their artist.
      I don't mind hearing their thoughts on her music, because I secretly have felt similarly about it in the past despite also liking it simultaneously due to my love for Byulie. It's hard to have conflicting feelings like that 😂. What I appreciate about these two is their main focus on production; if it turns out that the arrangement wasn't to their taste? No big deal, right? They still appreciate the artist and acknowledge her talent, even though they wanted to hear something different from the music. I'm not particularly their fan, and don't intend to completely defend them unconditionally or anything; I just don't always disagree with their opinions about the production, and I like hearing about the details in the background that I would miss.
      I've always thought it would be natural that there'd be people who disagree with any particular artist's music, since it's unreasonable to expect everyone to always approve of the production choices. People naturally disagree over art, so it's never bothered me to hear people dislike what I support. At least their opinions are more refreshing and enlightening than all of those politely lukewarm reactions that I regularly dragged myself through back then when I was searching for reactions to her music 😂.

      @@greenwickr I mean I didn't watch the reaction cause I didn't want to, so idk how they reacted here lol. but in the reaction i DID see from them, they appeared heavily biased against the group and the music right from the get go.
      I have no issue with people not liking a certain song or style of music, but when you phrase it as a fact that the music is bad rather than as your own personal opinion, that's where I think it gets a little sticky. and based off their reactions, it just appeared to me that they don't like kpop in the first place. so why they'd keep reacting to it is beyond me. but like I said; I don't like their videos so I simply did not watch it

You can also find solar singing lunatic on her solarsido channel. And the improvement in production is probably because mamamoo now takes on more control over production since they have a decade of experience and old enough to take control. Eclipse and Absences were earlier when RBW probably did the arraignment and production, more recent songs Moonbyul was more involved in production. Solar, Wheein and Hwasa are also much more involved in production, Solar especially writes and plays some of her own music.

    I love Moonbyul's vocals and she really can showcase it well in her covers and some of her other tracks. Unfortunately, it seems as if RBW doesn't know how to arrange her solo work to really fit her personal style to where she can really shine. Which isn't surprising, since I think the company tended to focus more on the other vocalists of Mamamoo since she was the rapper. Hopefully in future projects she can really shine! I think her Starlight of Muse album was a great starting point, even though Touchin and Movin was on the lower end of my personal faves.

    Eclipse, I totally agree the second verse should've been replaced by a rap. Otherwise it gets very repetitive.
    Surprised you guys liked Lunatic. I love Moonbyul's "generic" angst songs, so the noise of Lunatic isn't up my alley.
    You guys nailed though that Moonbyul tries too hard to show that she can sing. I actually think her belting songs (besides Absence) are a bit overwhelming on the ears, so I much prefer her songs where her singing is a bit more subtle and nuanced.
    To meet you guys in the middle, I'd suggest Iljido, Moon Movie, Chemistry, and Weird Day by Moonbyul. They're B-sides, but they're well-produced, interesting, and I think they balance her vocals and rap really well at the same time. She sings in a more rap-singing type of way (which is her forte imo), and they're super underrated tracks overall.

    one of my favorite songs by moonbyul is actually "selfish" feat. seulgi. I would love to see a part 2 with more songs! my recommendations would be selfish, G999, C.I.T.T and iljido. but it is true that shut down feat. seori is her best song so far!

    • @greenwickr
      @greenwickr 3 місяці тому

      Nice list! I'm very curious to hear what they think of those songs, but my guess is that two of them would be too simple and bland, while the other two are more aggressively louder in arrangement so I'm not sure if they'll approve 😂. I could be wrong though!
      I'm actually thinking of songs like Dark Romance, Like A Fool, Mirror, Snow, and all of the Present EP. Those are pretty easy to listen to but probably not too mild?

    Thing is Moonbyul like the ballads because she doesn't get a lot of vocal lines in mamamoo so...

    • @greenwickr
      @greenwickr 3 місяці тому

      Byulie also seems to like pop ballad songs, r&b-pop and just BG style pop in general. She's got more ballads now too, but of course she'll need to keep training in vocals because I don't think she has the confidence for dynamic riffing, which people tend to love about classic ballads. She's always got room to improve with deepening the layers of her voice too, to achieve the sort of oceanic depth that would heighten enjoyment of vocal songs.

    Unfortunately I feel that Moonbyul should have jumped ship when Wheein did to find a company that might know how to produce songs for her that would really showcase her ability and personal preferences/style.

  • @jae8407
    @jae8407 5 місяців тому +21

    What pisses me off about Moonbyul is her title track selections and the songs she chooses to sing that aren’t written by her.
    Chances are, if a Moonbyul song is god-awful, it’s because she didn’t take part in writing it. If it’s insanely well-written, with great melodies, production and lyrics, Moonbyul likely had involvement in the composition and/or songwriting.
    She has superb tracks like “Shutdown,” “Like A Fool,” and “Snow” where the production and songwriting are fucking great.
    But then she has ‘mid’ tracks like “Eclipse,” “Lunatic,” and “Touchin & Movin.” The production is generic, the arrangement is fucked, and the lyrics are mediocre.
    She has insane potential and sometimes fulfills it, but those times are usually on her B-sides. Unfortunately, when it comes to the songs that get the most eyes on her (title tracks), she tends to fall short.

      I'm curious about what they'd think about those b-sides. The only one where she contributed to production was Like A Fool though.

    • @greenwickr
      @greenwickr 3 місяці тому +1

      @@onceyouwheeinyoucantwheeout she's actually the one who felt that writing the title track was still too burdensome for her, as per her recent interview with Eunyi sbn. That's why she's usually focused more on contributions to b-sides. Maybe she'll try it in the future if she feels more confident?
      In the end, she's still the one who decided on her own title tracks and b-sides, so we can only watch to see what she's going to release next. We can hope that she tries to be more ambitious about what type of music she wants to release.

    RBW's CEO keeps a tight rein on the Mamamoo members in terms of what they can do with their solos and noticeably treat(ed) each member differently. There's a difference between how Solar & Moonbyul are treated vs how Wheein & Hwasa were treated. The unnies are in a less assured position due to the rampant ageism in the K-Pop industry and so RBW has gaslit them into thinking that it's their only choice while the maknaes left as soon as possible bc their solo careers were stalling and RBW didn't really have the resources they wanted or needed. You can see how much more expensive Moonbyul's MVs got as time went on but overall I would say that her newer songs are more samey than her older songs.
    I don't care bc Moonbyul is one of my ult biases but I do understand why these wouldn't convince someone to listen to more of her. Mamamoo solos rarely leave the fandom tbh because the members simply aren't willing to pander to popular tastes. Moonbyul has several songs prior to the official start of her solo career(Selfish ft. Seulgi, In My Room, Love & Hate) and many many collabs(The Lady[Bumkey ft. Moonbyul], Me Without You[Xydo ft. Moonbyul], G999 ft. Mirani, Star[AleXa ft. Moonbyul]) that are better than the songs in this video. That's excluding her many covers!
    I hope she can be more free to share what she wants to in the future. Solar's last album was very personal, as she wrote most of the songs herself and did some composing, and it's really given me more to think about in terms of how I judge solos from girl group members. I've become kinder towards them because at least the Mamamoo members have opportunities to pick up a pen if they really want to. I doubt Wendy, Nayeon, Lisa, etc get to decide anything for their comebacks and I want that to change in the future. Even if something is cringe(I happen to like cringe!!) if it comes from the heart it's a win.

    • @greenwickr
      @greenwickr 5 місяців тому +1

      Byulie has already specifically stated that the members are entirely free to do whatever they want with their solo work. She's stated that their CEO doesn't put any pressure or anything on them and actually encourages them to do what they like.
