Well, they’re not lying.
Their "CANONS" made in Japan 🇯🇵 off course 😎 .

The weird part is that, as you point out, this cheapo build is actually genius -- a useable drone for relative pennies, can lose lots of them in battle without problem. But then the actual cost of the thing is 80K to 120K USD? Looks like a lot of the cash went to somebody's overseas bank account instead...
Stay safe, Starsky.
oh i like the design ideas, but its something id expect from a group of rough and ready hobbiests in a rush, not a refined military product. also the 3d printed camera mount indicates they intended low production, or low standardisation of camera/lens system.
that's exactly what I like about it too, the idea that someone was grifting the Russian War machine... The more we can get that idea in Putin's head, the more paranoid he could become... then the infighting increases and they start eating there own.
There is a good chance that the bank account in question is now either frozen or seized, too.
Russia is a Kleptocracy.

As of the 4th of March, Canon is no longer selling its devices in Russia, so even these relatively simple drones will be hard to replace.
Nikon🤣
You'll notice they are running out of decent western (or eastern) cameras as soon as you find Russian Zenit cameras in those drones.
They would have to turn to off the shelf dji drones from box stores, which would ironically be an upgrade at a massive discount. The tricky part is figuring out how much to charge for the expensive Russian labor.
Use another camera 📸
China is still selling these cameras to Russia
As an aerospace engineer and model airplanes enthusiast, I can say that this is basically a nice model airplane for a Sunday afternoon in the countryside with your family, but definitely not a sophisticated reconnaissance UAV.
Does it cost 120K in your opinion? 😉
@@StarskyUA Definitely no! Your estimate is far more realistic!
@Operator Starsky 🇺🇦 Hi, I am RnD engineer from EU, we were thinking with colleagues about building our own cheap recon drones and sending them to Ukraine and I must say using that Canon camera is quite brilliant low-cost solution, cause such optics would be quite expensive to produce directly and with a good repeatability. This video really helped us, if you have other such videos or contacts to your guys who disassemble them, please feel free to share them. As for the price, I would expect st around 10k dollars for production cost of Orlan here in Czech republic. Most of that money would be used for salaries which are of course way lower in Russia so I would expect way lower price there.

That’s actually a pretty solid piece of kit. Saito engine and Canon optics. That thing will run forever.
All jokes aside, for being made of non proprietary components it's pretty amazing. But I don't think it's worth that much, especially if your make a large quantity of them.the thermal camera looks really expensive though.
And some oligarch gets fatter charging Putin’s puppets $150k per model
@@ogland6482 In reality, if you contracted for 100 of these from a US military supplier, it would probably cost at least that much. At 1000 the cost might come down some, but would still probably be about $20K. There is a huge NRE cost up front, then a huge cost of meeting military specifications.
In the US the DOD rules are so complicated that it takes experts that have been working in the field for decades to be able to be sure that the drone won't violate some government rule. Maybe there is less bureaucracy in Russia.
yah...thats not stupid to use parts which are available on the market. I would be more interested in communication how is that actually made as it needs to share real time video from different sources in high quality. This part can by costy i suspect. And what is real performance of this machine?
@@lwilton Yeah, people keep saying this but the reality is that this is a piece of crap made from civilian market components that are simply unfit for military service. Which is exactly the reason why the Russians are losing this war. That civilian Cannon camera has a limited lifespan. The engine is going to die too quickly under " military maintenance". The "gas tank" made from a regular plastic water bottle will eventually leak and set the entire thing on fire.
Military hardware is expensive for a reason. You can't have it break on you in the middle of a campaign. That's why everything is overbuilt. This "UAV" is essentially the same thing some monkey in a cave could put together from crap they found on eBay. Would you really like to go into battle with equipment made like that? Would anyone if they are still in their right mind?
The Brand "Saito" is actually well known to RC-Pilots all over the world... Basically, this company is producing model aircraft engines in a wide variety of sizes and types.
So the Russian Armed Forces spent 80-120k dollars on a model aircraft with a wedding camera stuck to it... while Russians have to fight for sugar and flour in supermarkets. Lovely.
Oh, so then it IS basically just a modified RC model Airplane with a camera, because that was the first thing I thought of when I saw a picture of one that was captured last week. I was even telling one of my friends at work that I was willing to bet it would even be powered by one of the miniature gas engines used in such RC planes.....
That's funny. Thanks for the insight! To be fair. I am sure it gets the job done.
Yes RC plane. Funny thing, I'm getting Gooole ads from Horizon Hobby after watching this video :)
We'll set them on the list of sanctions... Shall they buy them in a hardware store..... and smuggle them to Russia. This will still double the price. Were is the radio control from ??

Okay so what most of people here got wrong is that a price for an orlan system is 85k to 120k not for a single drone, a orlan system includes 3-5 drones and a control unit I mean yeah the price is still higher then they really cost but not by THAT much
Thanks for the insight. At one point, Wikipedia was quoting the USD 85-120k price each. Hiking the value also makes for better PR when the Stinger or other MANPAD bringing it down costs more than the drone/ UAV.
Not discussed here were the other electronics and controls required for control, GNSS and for data transmission.
The saito engine is 4 stroke hobby engine. About 799. Looks about 80 to 1.20 size. That's .80 to 1.2 cubic inch cylinder. It burns a 10 to 15 percent nitro fuel. The rest is castroil. Operation internally is almost diesel but it has valves on the cylinder head. The push rods are oporated from an exentric on the crank. Common in radio controlled planes. The kit for the air frame looks custom molded. The mold would take some time and money but the product each time would be super cheap. 50 maybe. The electronics for flight would be around 500. The GPS, cameras and and transmitter for views in real time would be the most expensive parts. Likely a few thousand. Maybe 2 to 5 . I've built and flown many small aircraft like it. But never with cameras.
My neighbor's kid built a plane like that with a 4k camera. All the parts are from EBAY and cost about 120.00 US. His aircraft has an electric motor and can fly autonomously 40 miles round trip or under control with an iPhone. He's 17 years old. I would doubt he couldn't build anything as sophisticated as that Russian drone.
As a model airplane builder myself I am pretty sure you are right there. There is a lot more sophisticated stuff out there just being used for recreation.
this one was built for 1000$, the 119000$ was pocketed, how else would they pay for those super yachts and villas in Italy?
This man speaks the truth.
@@dsfs17987 War is good for profit!
Your kids drone probably had a gimble which allows the drone to aim the camera toward an object. The russian "drone" can't do that - it has to fly directly overhead, where it can be heard and shot down.
A whole lot of corruption going on in Russia. The state pays, some profit, the people bleed for one mans dream. Good to see you again operator Starsky!
Oh yeah, this is definitely the result of Russian corruption… For that much money I would expect a crazy advanced drone not this.
I'm not even sure it's specific to Russia. I read a while ago that drones used as target practice in France were actually awful and a local RC model club could build something a lot better for a fraction of the cost. But since the army is paying anyway .... might have changed since then though, it's been almost 20 years iirc, but even in "developed" countries the army contractors might profit a lot because "military grade equipment" are expected to cost a fortune and there is virtually no competition since there is so few approved army's contractors so no one is really checking if the real value matches what they asked for it.

Hilarious reaction by the UKs. But being the age I am, I remember Viet-Nam well. The VC were ingenious at taking the utterly primitive and making it deadly. I remember seeing a VC field surgeons kit made entirely of the skin of US aircraft. The bone saw in this kit was frightening. Fortunately in this war so far, it is the UKs demonstrating ingenuity. De Oppresso Liber.
Just a quick note. Many people think of UK as standing for United Kingdom and I'm pretty sure that you aren't taling about Britain in that post. So perhaps you could write the word Ukraine instead of the abreviation? It would save us a lot of confusion. Thanks.
but that VC doctor probably didn't charge vietnam government (after they won) the price for the surgeons kit he made himself...
in the case of this drone, Russia's MOD paid their local company (STC) to build these drones and supply it to their military, and at a premium price at that
so the problem isn't that the drone is made of off the shelf cheap components
the problem (for the Russian military at least) is that they are being charged the price of a properly made small reconnaissance drone
but what they got is basically only slightly better than hobbyist RC aircraft which only cost a fraction of what they claimed.
So where did the rest of the 'supposed' cost of these drones go?
probably to STC company officials and some generals that STC greased to allow this contract to go through.
@@IonoTheFanatics Rest of the cost? Probably the parts of the drone that isn't of the shelf, like electronic warfare stuff and laser targeting. Also, the 100K isn't just one drone, it is two, with spare parts, ground-link and launchpad.
@@grimfpv292 that's a bit better... but that still put it's price into an awkward place given drones like say an RQ-11 which has a fully gimbal stabilized and rotating camera on it's more modern models (and also have laser designating capability or other gears as weight permit, that thing has been around and upgraded quite a few times)
is about 170K which is more than the Orlan's 100K
but that 170K is for
for 4 drones, 2 ground control unit + spare parts.
That's... a lot more bang for buck than 2 drones for 100K especially given an RQ-11 with a gimbal mount camera can look in any direction without having to fly directly overhead the way Orlan with the fixed DLSR camera does (which probably also explains why quite a number of Orlan have been shot down over Ukraine, that fixed camera position probably made it impossible for them to be used effectively without flying over the target... which is bad for the drone when the target can shoot at it)
Using off the shelf parts make sense to save cost and development time, but not if the end result is more expensive and less capable than similar sized drone with the same role that's been on the market.

Basically just leftover parts thrown together …..FYI: the engine is a Saito FA-62B - a 1 cylinder 4-stroke engine typically used in large RC planes, not very powerful (0.95 hp) but a reliable little engine.
The way this drone is setup with the cameras like that; means that it can only see straight down….it doesn’t even have a gimbal or anything you would typically see on any modern drone
Its a frontline drone that is easily mass produced. It doesnt need any special stuff like that. Considering the average loss rate of frontline drones this is pretty smart and very cost efficent. Our NATO forces propably have some super specialized hardcore drones costing a fortune for the msot mundane tasks because the US just prints more money if it needs it anyway.
I mean this thing is propably worth less then any ammunition you use to shoot it down except maybe MGs or assault rifles. Any rocket is more expensive then this. And if you find a shoot down one its easily repairable do to having no specialized parts.
And if you lose the drone, who cares, its cheap to rebuild anyway.
From an economic standpoint these drones are really smart, especailly if you take into account russia could be sanctioned. This is all made of stuff they can just buy through china, basically nothing that is specialized military gear that would be sanctioned obviously.
As much as we make fun of this, its actually a pretty smart solution considering russians position in the world from an economic and supply standpoint. And at least it gets them some pictures of the frontline, you dont need life footage all the time if youa rent launching rocket or artillery strikes. For planning an assault a basic picture of the area and the trench system to create an operations map is already a big help.
I really should restart building RC planes again if it is paying that good! I built planes in the 80’s as a teenager. Nice unboxing, love your humor, may the force be with you✌️

I have a friend who worked with Navy target drones in the 90's, these thing weren't cheap but also something a semi skilled hobbyist could knock out for a couple hundred quid.
For example the servos were just Futaba 148's, the most common servo at the time and easy to pick up for £5 each.
The Navy bought them at around 60 quid each.
Government bodies simply don't buy well esp on things considered disposable.
I can fully believe what a man in a shed can knock out for £500 each a Government would happily spend out 120k Russian or not with a lot of very happy middlemen along the way.

“Majority of this money would be spent of cigarettes and snacks” made my day! Most countries use UAV’s with live feeds back to command & control. Thank you Operator Starsky . Hope you get the glue off the camera. I really hope to see you and your bud's in better times . Slava Ukraini and god bless. Bob in Illinois.
May not be high tech... but using standard off the shelf solutions for a cheap and mass producable drone is a good thing in itself.
I'm missing an argument where this fails at its task before I'd say it's bad.
Somebody is probably filling his pockets with russian military budget money... but that is a good thing for you! ;)
That's the think though, it's not cheap! Who's the insane idiot who decided that the Russian government should pay $120k for this piece of garbage?
Exactly, even better when you take into account russia is sanctioned. Any military parts from foreign countries arent available anymore. They can get all the stuff for this drone through China with no problem
100k get you 2 drones, spare parts, launch-pad and ground-control-link. Really not a bad deal, for something they got 5 years to develop.
@@grimfpv292 Then you have a huge margin... but okay! ;)
Boiled down to true costs for 1000 units is below 10k.
Yes, that is fantastic!! Looks like something my kid would have put together when he was 12 years old! The mighty Russian war machine seems to be made out of straw! Victory to the brave people of Ukraine!
This was awesome! I couldn't stop laughing at the "sophisticated" make up of the Orlan........ something a 8 year old Ukrainian could do but it probably took a team of Russian "scientists" to put that together. You guys are great, keep up the great work!!!👍
I bet my ass Russian scientists don't actually receive more than 10% of the development budget because it gets snatched by corrupt officials lmao
Seeing how Russia treats civilians and soldiers alike, I wouldn't be surprised if they had used 8 year olds too.
Not RC plane enthusiast 8 year olds mind you
@Kam yes
@Kam Let's be real, they probably rotted in their silos years ago.
In all seriousness if a high school robotics club with a few thousand USD budget made that Id be pretty impressed. If we allow for maybe $5000 in parts (hang on to that FLIR thermal camera if that what that is btw, those are very expensive and valuable), maybe $10,000 in labor and R&D, and another $80,000 to buy some Russian oligarch a brand new BMW, I'd say the price tag is probably pretty accurate.
Best unboxing video. Ever! 🇺🇦👍
Stay safe Operator Starsky.
I never knew Ukrainians were so ironic before I started watching your videos. You guys are right there at the top with the brits
Haha.Meanwhile they are destroyed to the ground !!!!
@@jocskaalex terroruzzians? yeah, more than 100k destroyed already
Operator Starsky! you are doing an amazing job, thanks for all your reporting and the amazing things you find! Slava Ukrani!
The excess of final price over construction costs explains why all the oligarchs have massive yachts.
I hope this can be put in a military museum, with the "optic module" disassembled outside of the craft for display. It's hilarious.
I like this unboxing a lot. Would be great to see unboxing of T80 or Armada tank ;)
I think the nlaws and the javlen is keeping them warm.
Do you mean before or after it was "demilitarized"? 😀
I saw the other one that also had a RETAIL Canon camera in it. It was hilarious! So the current tech sanctions on Russia will prevent a single additional drone flying over Ukraine as Japan is also applying these tech sanctions!
OMG it's crazy :D
I'd like to see that I bet the reactions where even better although I love the lads energy here too can tell they enjoying the little moments.
The Russians used to make SLR cameras...but they were so heavy that contraption could not get off the ground with one on board.
getting such a camera would be very easy through india or other countries. but it gets more difficult for IR sensors that are harder to get. you would need to set up a shell company in india or elsewhere to order these parts from there
The only thing "Made in Russia" on the drone will be the bad alcohol in the fuel tank!
Very interesting Operator Starsky!
It would be "Homemade in Russia" then :-)
@@venividiviking Yes! Hahahaha
Best "unboxing" i ever saw 👏🤣.
Respect from Portugal🇵🇹 to all the Heros in UKRAINE 🇺🇦 .

May be it runs on Vodka!?
This makes me proud to be an American where we go to even GREATER lengths to use parts from other countries to build our drones! Even the parts for our cars come from everywhere else. "Made in America" has become so passe.
Is a IR cam from Raytheon really needed, or will the Honda on save you money and do whatever you need done in this context just as well?
Also I am pretty sure the US still makes the Bombs and Shells those drones fire, so there is that… :-)
This is about UA-cam META as you can get, an unboxing, a review of the components, and the quality of the product. 10/10 would watch another unboxing.
it's a vlog too, considering the broader concept of his channel
he could do a russian tank next.... but they unbox themselves :s
"Flying machine of International origin 🌍". 🤣🤣🤣
Love these guys, their sense of humor and sarcasm is uplifting at a time like this. 🥰 Slava Ukraini !!
This is amazing
I like this a lot, need a light you can use on your camera (on a dark indoor setting). I think we all appreciate the sarcasm and humour.
Good luck, stay safe.
Fascinating watching the "unboxing" of such an expensive Russian drone 😆 Thanks for sharing guys!! Keep safe!! 🙂👊🇺🇦
Patiently waiting for Operator Starsky to do a video on how Ukraine "demilitarised" the flagship of the Russian Black Sea Fleet and how it followed the instructions given to it by the defenders of Snake Island.
unfortunately i doubt any footage of its sinking was taken by anyone, not even by the russian sailors. however, it will become a very interesting site to look for after the war for people wanting to make a show of the finding of the wreck of Moskva and to see what battle damage it really took.
Until then, check out Operator Starsky's "Day 30" video, which describes the sinking of that military cargo carrier a while back. It was the first video of his I saw, and his dry humor made me laugh so much I immediately subscribed to his channel.
Thanks !!! 😄
5:43 I lost it when he said Pampers instead of diaper 😂😂😂😂
😂 😂 😂 now that was a great unboxing! The world sure has seen a different side to “the second strongest country!” I believe Ukraine has been moved up to that position! Glory to Ukraine! 🇺🇦 Much love from the USA! 🇺🇸

Identifed based on using Cameralink interface and by the layout of connectors and fasteners on its body under ten minutes of googling. It retails at 2500$ on Alibaba. Lens looks customized.
6:42 SD card rigid flex adaptor manufacturing datecode week 45 of 2015. The thermal camera module is 2019 relased model from the looks of it, relatively recent production then.
Detailed photos of all the circuit boards stipped of the wire harnesses would be very helpful for open source investigation.
Thanks, Operator Starsky! I laughed out loud about the Canon camera not being made in Japan joke! 😂 The humor during these dark times definitely boosts morale.
Wow, that is some real sophisticated highly technical equipment there. It actually looks like a do it yourself model kit from a hobby store. Glad to know the Russians have such advanced equipment at their disposal. Makes them the laughing stock of the world more and more everyday. They should just pack up their broken toys and go home.
This is the point actually.
Good tool does the job cheaply with available parts.
Obviously the quoted price of the drone is hidious, but it shows that even small countries are capable of manufacturing these drones.
@@valdius85 That is very true. It feels like the Russians are bringing rocks to a shoot out. Their sophisticated equipment may look good in parades in Moscow, but when it comes time to actually use them, they disappoint more often than they work properly. The Ukrainians are much better soldiers than the Russian troops, as we can all see. When you are protecting your home and country, you will fight much harder than drafted soldiers that don't want to be in the military of the aggressor. When the Russian troops find out they have been lied to to help invade a peaceful country, they seem to have no interest in helping Putin and his attempts to restore the USSR.
Small displacement Saito engine, Honda thermal cam, Canon DSLR cam, possible Chinese-made electronics and boards, possible Chinese-made Pampers-airbag, possible Chinese-sourced plastics/fibreglass for body, all of that for $80k-120k.......
Yea, someone's been skimming 90% of that cost per unit for his new penthouse in Dubai or a new yacht moored somewhere in the Bahamas
And now for the "stress test": Can the drone take wedding pictures from 800m? 😛 Thanks for the vid you guys. Slava Ukraini
Seems like the drones were produced through the best "international collaboration"😉. Well done!
russia made about 1000 of those Orlans according to wiki,
about 3 million dollars went on actual parts and
about $117 million went into pockets of Shoigu, nice :)
@E B: Corruption
@@cry2love C: Corruption D: Corruption E: all of the above
Or more likely they just lied about both the cost and the amount produced. Why not? "Yes, comrade, we spent 100m on this line of drones. You should surely do the same, no?" Meanwhile the rest of the money is funneled into black ops or other projects.
Mordor Quality .........
@@mikkei3532 I'm fairly sure Mordor actually had craftsmen of their own.
That's the kind of ingenuity & workmanship you might find posted on a RC forum. A hobbyist would have probably gone the extra mile & disassembled the DSLR first though.
Very creative!
Marvelous Russian piece of equipment 🤣🤣🤣
You have to give them credit for making something completely with off-the-shelf components. Improvisation at it's best. I find no fault in doing things that way, it's usually the most cost effective and quickest way to get something prototyped. I just hope the Ukrainians now know all it's weak spots so they can disable the remaining ones when they fly over.
Yeah, I agree, but the thing is they won't be able to make anything like that while being unders sanctions.
@@StarskyUA And we're all obviously very sad about this :)
I mean, its now off the shelves, as in, the shelves are empty.
"Git fucked" I think is the phrasing :D
That’s assuming they’re not actually spending 120K on them, which they probably are. The trash drone may be like $2k, maybe they pay some guy in Tuva $50 to assemble it and then some oligarch pockets the rest. This is an ongoing crime from the Kremlin against its people.
@@StarskyUA They will confiscate russian people cameras, lawnmowers to make more of this like they do with dolars ;)
I have always been wondering why military drones are so expensive - specially when looking into US drones. I have always thought that if I was Ukrainian military engineer I would design something similar and then mass produce them until Russians run out of ammo. Attack with some cheap DIY unguided bombs to get cost down to like $50 per bomb and win the war.
In some drones it is the payload that costs too much
It's actually doable. 50 dollars per bomb is even doable, considering you can make bombs from household things. I don't think Ukraine needs to resort to that just yet though - they have real stuff coming from Europe / UK / USA still =D
@@warbrain1053 What's the payload for example? I am completely blank on those ideas. Like Black Hornet Nano $195k for example. I would go nearest photography store and buy mini drone for $100 and have like 90% of use cases covered. Just adding few extra cameras shouldn't cost $195k.

Awesome video! I'm struggling to comprehend how that would be $80 - $100+k... a lot of commercial off the shelf products there that have been cleverly put together to create a very effective UAV...

what inner workings? its a model plane with a Cannon wedding camera.
Looks like they shopped the local hardware store (I'm being kind) or Radio Shack in the US, Bosch parts have been found in some RU tanks so there's a fracas about civilian parts (blah blah) & investigation. Do bust RU for Western parts if you find any (lets us know brands & we'll take it from there....)

IR Module / camera -- Lynred PICO640-046 module (Info using updated Starsky +Thales/ Sofradir, Wikipedia, gagadget)
According to specifications on the manufacturer's website, the Lynred PICO640-046 module allows you to create an image with a resolution of 640x480 pixels and a refresh rate of 120 hertz. It is certified to military standards MIL883, which allows it to operate in the temperature range from -40°C to +85°C, and has a 10-year warranty. When using optics with a focal length of 75 mm, this matrix allows you to detect a person (in the form of a single pixel) from a distance of 700 meters. These IR modules are manufactured by Thales, the French parent company that sold these to Russia after the 2014 sanctions. These do not require Joule-Thomson or Peltier cooling.
