The mod is actually incredibly awful at being historical due to there being 99999 more things to research and them restricting most your research slots to certain categories. Depending on your nation, you're also forced to invest a lot (if not all) of your construction potential into making food, electricity, etc, which completely messes up the pacing and timelines.
one guy running construction so everyone has to ask him to build what ever they need, one guy running production and everyone has to beg him to make what they need, then one guy running the spy agency who is only loyal to the guy running the focus tree, then you got the heads of army, navy and air. 'ah what a mess'
I think i speak for a fair majority of the people enjoying this series when I say we want more black ice. Maybe having a Collab with multiple people to represent the different branches and all that would not only make it more historical, but also make it easier so you don't make mistakes
In BICE. there's actually a "Historical Unit" setting at the bottom of the custom game tab. it makes historical division for you(Not too accurate)spawn at the time when that division was initially formed. but it's doesn't work for most nation... except for German and Soviet and British I think
Is this available in the base mod now? It used to require a submod (that shows as out of date, but still functions). Frankly, I've only gotten it to work with Germany, but it does help with getting divisions into the field (albeit at the cost of making your equipment shortage worse). It does have decisions for motorizing the historical divisions and updating the Panzer and light division organizations.
it's certainly a strong contender czechoslovakia gave germany a lot in tanks mostly, allowing them to do the tank storm of 1939-41, small arms were probably not in rest either but outside of LMGs (before that they were still using a lot of LMG 08/15) probably didn't play as much a role, uncertain for artillery as outside of the Lt.vz.35/38 and the pzjgr1, i don't remember germany using much czech guns
@@quentintin1 I can't answer as to the proportion of the German Artillery that was Czech made, but they certainly used quite a bit of Czech made Artillery and Anti-Tank guns. I don't think it was as influential as the Czech tanks were for supplying the Wehrmacht, but it wasn't insignificant that's for sure.
The ss divisions are meant to be put into capitols, in which they will lower resistance, later SS divisions actually have semi good divisions which can be a good d day wall
fun fact in real life oil production in Romania was about ~6mln tonnes a year compare that to USSR at ~29mln tonnes and USA at fucking 170mln tonnes Romania alone would never be enough to solve German oil problems is what I'm saying
Whats funny is the Germans had an oil deficit pre France invasion in mid 40'. They made that deficit worse by conquering the West and North. Haha. The occupied territories knocked them even more out of balance as they could only take from occupied territories so much or the economies would shut down. Always found that humerous. They really did need to capture the East. Just like Japan needed the Dutch East Indies.
@@jonny-b4954another interesting thing i read was in summer 1940 the germans managed to capture the majority of the french and belgian oil, so they ran mostly on french oil for quite a bit of tue war
For defensive, you went historically correct, since germans didn't really develop new defensive doctrines since ww1 and focused mainly on experiences from ww1 eastern fromt, where war of movement (Bewegungskrieg, sometimes incorrectly called as Blitzkrieg) was relatively sucessfully used. But Soviets didn't rest with defensive doctrines just like tank development (unlike germans). Mainly Mikhail Tukhachevsky developed new defensive strategy of Deep operation, where they didn't rely on one decisive battle on frontline, but knowing, that their front with germany is likely to by used whole, relied on multiple decisive battles/operations
Deep operation was offensive. The USSR also did not develop beyond WWI. Not because they were behind but because WWI defensive tactics work. The entrenchment and artillery compliment each other in the most effective way and you can see how WWI ideas still rule the defensive field today.
Not sure if someone already mentioned that at 36:28, but: Volkssturm and Volksgrenadiers were two separate things. Volkssturm was a civilian militia under direct command of the NSDAP and their local officials, with ultimate command lying with Goebbels. They were poorly equipped and trained, most of the time being issued a mix of civilian hunting rifles, WWI surplus, civilian clothes and last ditch effort weapons such as the Volkssturmgewehr, the Panzerfaust and similar. The Volksgrenadiers on the other hand were legitimate military units under command of, and part of, the regular Wehrmacht's organization. AFAIK they were created in late summer to hearly autumn 1944. They were issued uniforms and handed whatever proper weapons were still being produced (MP40, some STG44s, G43s, Kar98ks (late war models), Panzerfausts, Panzerschrecks, etc.). The name was presumably chosen to hold up morale after the devastating losses of Operation Bagration.

I would love to see you play Black Ice the best you can, no historical but optimal and logical in your opinion. Either way love your content and this video was not exceptions.
Honestly the hardest part of playing this mod for me was looking at the unit markers. They're so huge and unsightly I never played it again. Shame too because BlackICE for HOI III was a classic and gave that game a lot of needed depth. But the icons in that game made sense for the game it was. You don't need these giant markers in HOI IV!
@@draskk3471 It's for readability, because a few of the NATO symbols can become difficult to distinguish from one another if the icon is small. The absolute worst part about BICE is that it forces NATO symbols.
@johnteixeira6405 NATO symbols are not that hard to read though. Cross for infantry, half cross for cav, circle for tanks, and dots for artillery. Everything else is either self explanatory or an extension of that
If you want a somewhat easier BICE experience, try playing the US. Large industrial base, far away form the frontlines, and tons of manpower. Just don’t build carrier naval bombers, there is a -50% attack penalty for them and all torpedos used (it effects submarines and DDs as well)
I'm really happy to see this challenge from you in BICE :) That's my favourite mode on HoI4, i like to play it but it's really small amount funny videos about it :(
I really want to see you try the China with New Model Army templates with this challenge in the WW1 mod still. See you justify field hospitals because the sanctioned musicians are "Healers of the Soul" or something
Ah yes, Black Ice. The mod that shoehorns in "historical" without any regard for the circumstances behind why things were done the way they were. So you'll have to produce that panzer I long after it's obsolete because it's "historical", ignoring the fact that it happened historically because there was a shortage of actual tanks. So even if you have plenty of more up-to-date tanks, you have to use the earlier models because historical is ignoring why it happened to begin with.
Also a cool thing is that if you get the editable SS division sub-mod for black ice, you can add parachuteable light artillery as a line battalion for future reference.
It was real suffering, but also fun! Now if only UA-cam will show it to people despite 12% ctr and high view duration, it might stop slipping down the chart :( currently 4/10 and slipping. Maybe it’s just TOO nerdy, you know?
Love the videos, I too am a fellow Hoi4 pain enjoyer, though I will never touch Black Ice personally as I value what little sanity I have left. The fact that at 9:54 I saw the same cap gun that I got from Disneyland Paris as a kid, and that the lock on the cap holder is broken, same as my own, was just funny to me.
Glad to hear you enjoy it! This video took an absolute age, so I really appreciate it :) BICE is surprisingly satisfying and addicting... OH WHAT that's so crazy xD That must be where I got it from, I've had it FOREVER! That's so funny that it has the exact same defect!
My most recent black ice game I lost 1,000,000 manpower throughout my entire campaign. I would recommend only using tanks for offense and leave the infantry to only attack divisions which are either 1. out of supply, or 2. in Poland before they have mobilized. As well, if you convoy raid the British with LSS submarines in the mid Atlantic and the ocean between Africa and South America, they will never be able to D-day because of a lack of convoys. As well, pushing into Russia is usually where the most men are lost, and this can be avoided by snaking with tank divisions and as you advance leaving one behind on the tile you just took to capture railways leading to supply hubs. This allows for the out of supply benefit when attacking with infantry, as well as creating easy encirclements. Also, I recommend taking Leningrad from the Finnish front instead of the German, because there is significantly more supply on the Finnish end.
I'm still early in the video, so I don't know if you found this out yet, but you actually aren't entirely limited to prebuilt designs. Only for aircraft: there are pre built tank and ship designs, but also ship and tank desingers to fine-tune them yourself if you want. I actually kinda like the pre-built design system, as it lets you grab a historical design for a few xp and then modify it based off of the situation, rather than needing to dump 30xp on a fresh design made from scratch.
you should definitely do more countries in black ice, no other channel has good videos on it, I tried France myself but it was hell, I would love to see France and winning the winter war as Finland, or even winning as Poland in black ice
They are likely semi motorized because they still rely on horse drawn logistics, unlike western allies which did for the most part have fully motorized forces.
You know that makes a lot of sense! Very cool, thanks for that idea, that meshes well with my brain for what they are! Wish I’d used them now, though I struggled to find sources for their existence e
This seems pretty interesting and kinda cool, you would obviously do better in a round 2. And i was expecting you to lose, so i guess the mod is realistic.
Good vid! This historic challenge is so much more interesting than usual metagaming HOI4 content. No one needs to Sea Lion cheese for the billionth time. I liked the attention to detail.
I agree! Definitely makes the videos a lot harder to make though xD trying to intersperse mod challenges and other stuff in with the historical series to vary it up a bit, but plenty of more historical stuff coming soon!
I think you missed some things that would boost organization of your division templates, like headquarter-battalion, doctrine, ... they actually had that historically
My go to is to put recruitment centers everywhere. Every tiny province provides the same +weekly manpower, and a lot of them can make a substantial difference, or so I gaslight myself into thinking. +75 men weekly on 50 provinces should give around 190k men a year
In Black Ice, when you do national focuses, they give you historical presets. And trough focuses they give you a waffens ss divisions from occupied territories, so it help with low manpower.
Dunno if you'll see this (I am subscribed): 1) British Raj gameplay with historical divisions (base HOI4 or BICE your choice lol) 2) If possible to do it, Indian National Army (allied with Japan) with historical divisions. Love your content.
I'm so happy i discovered this channel a while back. It's given me something i never knew i wanted. I look forward to every historical division video since i found this channel!.

So fun fact, Nepal actually did declare war on Germany in 1939 in a show of good faith to the British.
That's so weird! Didn't know that!
35:19
For context: the Sportpalast speech is also known as the Total War speech
I would love to see you play Black Ice the best you can, no historical but optimal and logical in your opinion. Either way love your content and this video was not exceptions.
Honestly the hardest part of playing this mod for me was looking at the unit markers. They're so huge and unsightly I never played it again. Shame too because BlackICE for HOI III was a classic and gave that game a lot of needed depth. But the icons in that game made sense for the game it was. You don't need these giant markers in HOI IV!
Worst part is they could've kept the vanilla sizes and kept the unit type markers, but they made them gigantic
Everything else is either self explanatory or an extension of that
Happy Birthday🎉 Great Vid😂❤
Thank you so much! Really appreciate the support
Im getting overwhelmed just from watching you play. How the hell do people play that mod.
If you want a somewhat easier BICE experience, try playing the US. Large industrial base, far away form the frontlines, and tons of manpower. Just don’t build carrier naval bombers, there is a -50% attack penalty for them and all torpedos used (it effects submarines and DDs as well)
I find it cool how he lost for the exact same reasons why Germany lost irl
- no air
- no manpower
- poor industrial management
- incompetent allies
I know right?! Fit perfectly!
AiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiR
Congratulations on turning 32.000 and reaching your subscriber goal!
Love the videos :)
Thank you so much!! It’s been a whirlwind last few months but I’m hoping to keep going!
@@Aldrahill I hope so too, can't get enough of the content! ❤️
Awesome
I'm really happy to see this challenge from you in BICE :)
That's my favourite mode on HoI4, i like to play it but it's really small amount funny videos about it :(
Glad you liked it!! It was a ton of fun :)
I'd love to see a redo of this as Germany with your new knowledge.
I really want to see you try the China with New Model Army templates with this challenge in the WW1 mod still. See you justify field hospitals because the sanctioned musicians are "Healers of the Soul" or something
Oh Christ ima have to write this down xD
I would 100% watch you play this as a "normal" game, meaning no historical bounds
Just you, trying to understand the flustercluck that is this mod :D
Thank you! Would have to be a good while though, as I wouldn’t want to just repeat the same gameplay!
Yeah there is definitely a lot of random shoehorning in, but the production is fun!!
Also a cool thing is that if you get the editable SS division sub-mod for black ice, you can add parachuteable light artillery as a line battalion for future reference.
“Now I have to pull the Atlantic wall off to hold the Soviets!” I think he wanted to die faster from the Allies
I loved the ad. No boring talking, but engaging skit. It's pleasure to watch these
Ayyy damn thank you so much!!
Very very cool video, happy birthday!!
Thank you 🤗
You are a madman for doing this
It was real suffering, but also fun!
For the navy challenge you can use all ships. You can also use the naval airplane and CAS so you can use aircraft carrier.
Seeing the start of this video (up to 41’) it’s no wonder the Heer (and by extension the Reich) lost the war.
All great advice! I was definitely too aggressive in my pushes here!
Yes indeed, I realized I could have played around with them! But as far as I was aware, they were already super historical, so there wasn't a need :)
Historically accurate Dutch game when?
Operation barbarossa commenced at 3.15am on the 22 of june 1941
Ahh it’s the precise time I
Always blank on
Glad to see my sub went to a good cause. Happy birthday!!
”I will try to time the invasion of poland historically”
>starts the war several weeks late
Focus timing is hard :(
Happy birthday! And thanks for yet another amazing video!
thank you!!!
Most impossible challange is here for you , make someone who never played hoi4 play blackice and somehow make them do a wc pre 1943.
Force my wife to play it xD
Idea : break black ice , become the shit post like tank only in black ice
Oh god xD
BlackIce is complicated and all but honestly I think World Ablaze 8.0 is far harder
Haven’t played WA since 7.0, what makes it harder?
I’m still waiting for Ottoman Empire but historical presets and divisions :D
(Please do it 😭🙏🙏
Just divisions of Calvary and infantry 😂
It’s definitely coming! Just struggling with sources!!
you should definitely do more countries in black ice, no other channel has good videos on it, I tried France myself but it was hell, I would love to see France and winning the winter war as Finland, or even winning as Poland in black ice
You betcha! Thank you for your comment, I’m tallying up all suggestions
You make amazing videos, I would love more videos and especially black ice versions.
Thank you so much that’s so kind of you to say
This seems pretty interesting and kinda cool, you would obviously do better in a round 2.
And i was expecting you to lose, so i guess the mod is realistic.
So much realism xD thank you for your comment!
You actually did my challenge, mad respect for doing this.
I aim to please
I'd love to see more black ICE! Would even be great seeing an Ahistorical playthrough
Good vid! This historic challenge is so much more interesting than usual metagaming HOI4 content. No one needs to Sea Lion cheese for the billionth time. I liked the attention to detail.
I agree! Definitely makes the videos a lot harder to make though xD trying to intersperse mod challenges and other stuff in with the historical series to vary it up a bit, but plenty of more historical stuff coming soon!
now survive as USSR in black ice using historical divisions so I can see you suffer and use 100% historical authenticity too
Ohhh it’s coming!!
"I'll be bad at it but, so was Germany, so it will be historical." Truer words were never spoken.
I think you missed some things that would boost organization of your division templates, like headquarter-battalion, doctrine, ... they actually had that historically
I'd absolutely join a collaboration effort to be more "historical"
The Gebirg's were exactly the same as the Lichte division, except they were mountain.
My go to is to put recruitment centers everywhere. Every tiny province provides the same +weekly manpower, and a lot of them can make a substantial difference, or so I gaslight myself into thinking. +75 men weekly on 50 provinces should give around 190k men a year
But think of the lost mil factories! :(
In Black Ice, when you do national focuses, they give you historical presets. And trough focuses they give you a waffens ss divisions from occupied territories, so it help with low manpower.
Crap… shoulda done that
Panzer 4's early models had 7.5cm short gun not an automatic cannon. Later models got long 7.5's
Dunno if you'll see this (I am subscribed):
1) British Raj gameplay with historical divisions (base HOI4 or BICE your choice lol)
2) If possible to do it, Indian National Army (allied with Japan) with historical divisions.
Love your content.
Ooo cool suggestions! Hard to get sources for though! And don’t worry, I read all comments!
27:32 you forgot to add the amogus into the gebirgsjäger devision
General Kenobi, you are a bold one (imma keep doing this until you respond Aldahill)
I was trained in the hoi4 arts by Count Feedback
I need everybody to subscribe to this man right now so I can see him play as a railroad
Man and just when you have to play Italy in black ice😂
Yes! Been waiting for this vid and it's here!
Whisper shouting. now that takes me back to childhood.
Happy 32,000th birthday dude
I am so old :(
I'm so happy i discovered this channel a while back. It's given me something i never knew i wanted. I look forward to every historical division video since i found this channel!.
Oh damn thank you so much!!! I agree on that it really scratches an itch to play like this :D
More black ice. Do it again. Do it again. Do it again
Oh goood xd
I've been waiting for this.
Just like historical Germany there was nothing you could have done to win. Except somehow you lost quicker
I’m talented that way!
Congrats on 32k(34k now) but whoever made this mod either wanted to convey the reality of war for governments or just make a ridiculously painful mod😂
Either or its still one of the most impressive mods
Thank you! Now to see if I can hit my next goal! And yeah the mod is extreme :D
Black Ice mod is just pain and suffering. I guess devs were on some really heavy drugs when they worked on that.😂😅
Congrats with 32k subscribers 👏 🔥🔥🎉
Galway it is hard xD thank you!!
so some guy with 20 000 hours in hearts of iron woke up one day and said "fuck it, i will make this game even more complicated" and thus black ice was born
And then another idiot decided to”maybe I’ll make it even harder and play purely historically” and this my end was born
The VPN sponsorship cutaway was great 😂
Ayy thank you so much! I’m really proud of this one :D
It’s already out? Time does fly when you’re having fun.
I'm used to the black ice symbols cuz I don't know how to turn off the div symbols on vanilla to be replaced by helmets
Super interesting video. I would love to see more black ice videos.
Thank you! Definitely seems like a plan!
The volksgrenadiers were absolutely different from the volkssturm.
The volksgrenadiers were basically regular troops but with a new fancy name for propaganda reasons while the volkssturm were old men and children with not training, a sh*t ton of panzerfausts, and three bullets for their rifles.
