I love stories about people using microcomputers. That is why I watched your show. I feel that I could work with DOS, because it is commensurate my keyboarding skills. I could operate that operating system and hope I would not need to memorize every single command.
Thank you! I appreciate the feedback. Absolutely, MS-DOS can be very fun to use without being an expert and knowing every single command. It's an excellent choice for a hobbyist!
@@adventuresinnostalgia425 You are welcome. I am using Microsoft Windows 11 Professional, a quick graduation from Microsoft Windows 10 Professional. I will try not to have those former missed employment opportunities put me in circles. I missed learning DOS older than 3.0 all the way to Microsoft Windows 2000. Fortunately, I was at home with Microsoft Windows XP Professional and Microsoft Office XP Professional with my first microcomputer. I just will not settle for less. Thank you for typing to me. Happy Keyboarding!
I love that DOS allows you to write bat files that not only run commands line by line, but can also pause within and run other bat files, and even use pointing to select labels inside the bat files to start running commands from.
You can also pass multiple variables to bat files. This makes simple but useful command line scripts easy to make and use.
I feel like WordPerfect 5.1, Lotus 1-2-3, and Brief would be good additions for the Optional Programs folder.
!!! I love this idea! Thank you for the suggestion.
Spreadsheet software for DOS seemed simpler back then. Best of all you could store it on a floppy and run it on any computer with DOS installed.
in the list of your VMs i see arachne - nice to see that after a quarter of century :D
it reminds me about allegro game library from also similar time when i was learning how to code in C, using djgpp ;)
Good times... Good times
Thanks for this. I remember back in the day attempting to make portable DOS OS (and Win9x, ME) in the same fashion. Ultimately I didn't achieve distribute-able portable CD-ROMs but had a few that worked[ish]. The main thing is that I did learn a heck of a lot along the way, which was the important part :), like how to make Win 95 run from 60MiB of files lol
>
Since the BART-PE and other portable Win-PE creators came out I kinda stopped making portable OSs from scratch. But creating custom Win-PE USBs and my own Ubuntu flavours is still a fun kick :P
>
Just stepped back into a bit of DOS fun recently with FD 1.2 and 1.3 and writing some setup guides/books for software dev on DOS :P
Have a great day :)
This is fascinating! Thank you for sharing. I'm curious to know what the troubles were with a portable DOS OS. Was it the swap file in Windows 9.x? While pondering this, the swap file is the first thing that came to mind.
Dosshell would be cool to see
Excellent suggestion!
i'm glad CD-ROM support is built-in... is it possible to get MS-DOS mode networking and USB support working, too? I remeber seeing experimental USB drivers (for USB 0.9) under MS-DOS 6.22... but that was a lifetime ago...
Yes, there are USB 1.1 drivers for MS-DOS. I have not tested that and networking under this version of DOS
I've used DOS USB drivers, it's cool, but many years ago it was a little buggy...and DOES NOT SUPPORT Hot Swap.

Tcpip Stack exist for dos from Microsoft. I use it to Connect to a Windows Share and start "winnt Setup" over Network.
Woah! I had always assumed DOS 7 from windows '95/'98 was the last DOS.... Windows '98 was my last Windows version - I "went Linux" before ME came out.
I still think naming an operating system after Myalgic Encephalomyelitis was a very very bad idea!
Wouldn't surprise me if you still found components of DOS in current Windows despite them claiming to have re-written the OS from scratch. MS loves copy and pasting code. Did you notice that the so called new code Millennium still had a copy of qbasic in there?
ME was a strange version of Windows. I hear that a lot of things didn't work well. Some of the problems it had came from it running on DOS. When I got Windows XP I was first on Windows 98 which is similar to ME in some ways. The difference is that XP had the NT kernel and was more stable just not having to work with DOS behind the scene.
There is a version of DOS in Windows XP but there doesn't seem to be a way to make a standalone distro from it

I do remember wondering if there was anhything about the DOS that Me ran with but... it wasn't very important by that time and of course Me went to lengths to even avoid you ever knowing it was running on top of good old DOS :)
It's interesting MS did make it a whole new version, that said I couldn't tell you the functional difference between 6.22 and 7.0/7.1 except for long filename support.
That's about it
I used to use QEMM a lot when I still used DOS. It really helped out a lot with freeing that 640K so that things can run normal. Of course some games had their own different memory needs and there would sometimes be a separate boot disk to get those running. It was not the most convenient thing but it worked. Also tinkering with AUTOEXEC and CONFIG.SYS was not always easy. Then if that wasn't bad enough a lot of computers from that time period also had jumpers that had to be moved to assign the proper resources or the computer might hang and appear to be broken. Does Windows still use IRQ and DMA settings? I never have to bother with them any more so I wonder. Anyhow I can't remember the last time I used a floppy disk or any DOS software.
Pretty sure all of those things are still there, but they're automatically configured by the system. Have been for about 25 years now. The Plug and Play in Windows 2000 was much more robust than Windows 9x, and it's only gotten better since then. :)
IRQs and such are still a thing even today, but PnP (Plug and Play) is the technology that allowed all that to be automatically set through software, instead of hardware jumpers.
The optional boot option available in ms-dos 5.0 and ms-dos 6.0 really helped with these oddball cases. Took a bit to learn how to configure it the first time though.
True. Even the latest and greatest CPU architecture includes interrupt lines which the BIOS/UEFI have the ability to communicate on.
Qemm is rather good
Is there any advantage to using MS-DOS 8 instead of MS-DOS 7.1?
Cool. When would you use this over DOS 6 or 7?
I need to figure out a way to disable the included memory manager on boot. Then it would be a viable option over 7.1
Do you think it would have any advantages over 7?
@@adventuresinnostalgia425 but what advantage is there?
@@adventuresinnostalgia425
FreeDOS has a new version, how is it standing vs ms-dos 8?
@@bruwinthe version number is bigger
Are there any benefits of running this on say 386/486 instead of the combat-proven 6.22?
No. Technically MS-DOS 5.0 is better for 386/486 than 6.22 is. There would not be a benefit to running 8.0 on a system of that era
Add CD-ROM support during install for cdrom based games?
Noted
Given how little is changed, wouldn't this be more like 7.2 ? 7.22 ? :D
Also, I'm lazy to test, but with the better memory manager (and I guess, more conventional memory available?) would this make Arena or Daggerfall run better ?
I agree with you. However, Microsoft assigned the version number 8.
_What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell just as sweet._
There is still the issue of not being able to load your own memory manager. There is a fix for it, and I hope to have it included in the next release.
@@adventuresinnostalgia425 Oh, so it DID name it. I thought it named it that WinME emergency tool thing. In that case, never mind :)
What is new in 8 then 7.1?
Bugs... That's abou it :)
But.. why? MS-DOS 8.0 removed real mode support essentially breaking most DOS programs
It was a business decision
but most important, how about games, did you tried some? ;-)
I wanted to include a compatability list, but am yet to find the time to do so
The patreon has been removed. Any other way to get the iso?

Looking for the .ISO /?
Just a brief aside, i saw the title of this video and immediately thought "ugh, why?". I'm enjoying the video but it's that kneejerk reaction that got me. it's kinda mind blowing that WinME blew such an immense crater into our collective cultural memory.
i used to have winows me and after alot of tinkering i had it nearly as stable as 98 (not that 98 was very stable) i used to have a program that scanned the ram in realtime to fix errors BEFORE they crash anything. i think it was called anticrash from dachsund software i might have spell that wrong ...dachsund like the dog
That sounds like some pretty nifty software!
Interesting... but why do this work, when you can just download and run FreeDOS? It is still under active development- even MS employees contribute to it. Plus it has far, far more capabilities, such as support for modern computer, USB, networking and more.
posterity
Why just download and install FreeDOS? Why not take up a challenge, overcome your obstacles and succeed at the task? Why take the easy route? If everyone had your mentality we would still be throwing rocks at animals.
Link?

I like this idea! It probably wouldn't be that hard to do either.
DId your Patreon ever get fixed?
No, I had to switch to Buy Me a Coffee, which I like better anyway. You don't have donate monthly. A one time donation still gives you access to perks. At least, that is how I have it set up currently. The link to my BMAC page is in the video description.
@@adventuresinnostalgia425 This particular video still has your Patreon link. I just found your BuyMeACoffee link on a newer video though. Thanks!
IMO FM was better than Xtree Gold.
I'm not sure I like Xtreme Gold more than any other file manager. It's not bad, just not the best
Not sure why people want to add background music, especially when they are talking.
It's so I can dance
You don't need to phrase your comments to him like an ass.
I like the music 🙂 nicer than silence throughout. Appropriate dynamic range.
@@Turabbo There is one downside though. If you listen to, say, 1.5 or 1.75 or even 2x speed as some people can, the music sounds cheesy or awful or simply very distracting.
@@Turabbo , Probably my Asperger’s. Even in my accidental meanness, I misspoke: I don’t like silent videos either. I meant only when the host is speaking. And I think I phrased it that way in order to avoid what I consider another rudeness: telling people what to do on their videos. Intended to hint.
@@dazgodbold , lol
So you want to release a dead OS, that no one has any use for. Have fun.
Thank you! It's actually been a very enjoyable experience. I appreciate the support!
