    I never realized that Spelman college was his wife's family name. This is a fascinating history and beautiful filmmaking. The house is lovely but the outdoor sculpture collection is stupendous. I wish there was more time spent in the magnificent landscape. Some drone footage would be really great.

    My dad sold my grandmothers Bar Harbor property to John D. Rockefeller Jr. He had great taste too bad today's wealth doesn't have appreciation of classical and contemporary art.

    It's a magnificent estate, but when you tour it, you're bound by all sorts of restrictions: "Don't go here, you can overlook a still private family home; don't go there, it's offices or still used by the Foundation/family." When I went, we couldn't see anything but the 1st floor and basement galleries plus the carriage house and some of the grounds. Still, it's worth seeing.

      That follows all the same doctrines of the Brandywine Valley duPont homes. It does not diminish any of the tours what so ever if you follow many of them as a member, they are always changing the interior scenery and addind to gardens and having new parts of the estates become accessible. Make them your treasures as well, involve yourself if you are local and be amazed at what new items become rotated through the rooms.

    This home is AWESOME! Classy and timeless... I'm a realtor in LA and not many homes are that well preserved, In fact, I've seen many ugly multi-million dollar homes, so just cause it is expensive does not make it good.

    I love the historical architecture! It's also great the tour of this lovely home comes with a brief, albeit well-scripted biography. Clients who love properties like these typically want to reside in communities that have well-established histories. Since I study historical properties, I know where a lot historical properties are located.

    I’m curious as to the Interior Design…and if White*Allom of London were involved..as they were then the go-to designers of the day. The marble mantel piece’s and carved over mantels are their trademark. They also did interior design for the Widener’s, Stotesbury’s, Frick, Huntington Library, and many such great houses in the USA. Does anyone know?

    "Kykuit" is closer to Afrikaans than Dutch. The Dutch would spell it 'Kijk uit', two words, which means 'look out'. In Afrikaans "kyk" also means 'look' and "uit' means 'out' and since it's an aggregation, "Kykuit" literally means "Lookout" and should theoretically be pronounced as 'cake eight' in American English - certainly not "kike cut"! I must add that "kykuit" is not an actual Afrikaans aggregation, nor Dutch, and the closest meaningful equivalent would be 'pasop' (pas op = watch out). Semantics, yes, but the name Kykuit is unique and not a word that exists in that specific form in either Dutch nor Afrikaans (perhaps Flemish?), so I guess if Americans want to call it "kike cut" it's all good.

    • @truehappiness4U
      @truehappiness4U Рік тому +1

      Yeah it sounds more Flemish(kijk uit!), but Kykuit is written in old Dutch. Dutch now uses ‘kijk’, while old Dutch/Flemish uses ‘kyk’. Africans didn’t invade USA, whereas the Dutch did invade part of USA in the past. So I’m thinking it has more to do with the Dutch or Flemish than the Africans.

      "Kykuit" is closer to Afrikaans than Dutch: where "kyk" means 'look' and "uit' means 'out' and since it's an aggregation, "Kykuit" literally means "Lookout" and should be pronounced similarly to 'cake eight' in American English. Its a shame that it became a museum and that it isn't lived in by members of the family still today. Many English stately homes have remained in private hands for hundreds of years and are still lived in by the family. I can't think of any stately American estate that has remained a private home. Biltmore and other Vanderbilt homes are now museums as well. Gardiner's Island near East Hampton is still privately owned by the same family for about 200 years but they don't and have never resided on the island full time.

    So Kykuit is actually comes from Afrikaans. Kyk means "look" and uit means "out". So "look out" referring to the view possibly. It's also being mispronounced here. Correct pronounciation would sound like 'cake eight'.

      I don't know why the Rockefeller Family would have used an Afrikaans word. What I do know is that "Kykuit" is closer to Afrikaans than Dutch, yes, I agree with you. The Dutch would spell it 'Kijk uit', two words, which means 'look out'. In Afrikaans "kyk" also means 'look' and "uit' means 'out' and since it's an aggregation, "Kykuit" literally means "Lookout" and should theoretically be pronounced as 'cake eight' in American English like you mentioned - certainly not "kike cut"! I must add that "kykuit" is not an actual Afrikaans aggregation, nor Dutch, and the closest meaningful equivalent would be 'pasop' (pas op = watch out). Semantics, yes, but the name Kykuit is unique and not a word that exists in that specific form in either Dutch nor Afrikaans. In Afrikaans we would rather say "uitkyk".
