I was at this concert, my first live show. Lynyrd Sky yes wasn't even the headliner. The complete lineup, in order of appearance, The Outlaws ( check Green Grass and High Tides), Santana, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Peter Frampton. Skynyrd stole the show. It set a high bar for the rest of my concert going life.
You need to see the full version of Freebird at Knebworth from 1976. The reason so many women are in this Oakland crowd is because they came for the headliner of the 1977 festival Day On The Green, Peter Frampton who has a 24 minute version of Do you feel like we do, where he gets off guitar and plays tambourine and then drums. 1977 Oakland. You should see.

In the 70's the Confederate flag stood for being a Rebal, doing whatever you wanted. That is what this band stood for. Ronnie Vanzant was actually very much for equality. The band were very much behind freedom for all. This is when it took talent to make music. No autotune, no computer or voice enhancements. Ronnie Vanzant on vocals, Steve Gaines lead guitar, Allen Collins lead guitar, Gary Rosington lead guitar, Leon Wilkinson on that amazing bass, Billy Powel on piano and Artimus Pile on drums. To have been able to bottle the energy being expended by the band, the crowd -- what a savings it could have been for the Oakland Electric Utilities Dept. -- use it to run the street lights at night, FOR FREE, because of this one helluva rockin' band from the Jacksonville FLA area. THANK YOU! for noticing the abilities and contribution made by Leon Wilkeson (brown, leather pants dude) playing bass! Always impressive to see a bassman pluck those cables -- not simple strings like lead or rhythm guitar -- at such a high speed, for an extended period, and done so very crisply, cleanly! This concert's ending is so much more energetic than the one recorded on the album. NO CELL PHONES! Concertgoers paying attention to the stage, the performers, and (occasionally) their dates! Why not make your scoreboard more of a Richter scale printout -- steep ups-and-downs, etc. If anybody comes close to the 19.0 score for "Free Bird" it MAY BE Stevie Ray Vaughan and "Texas Flood" live at El Mocambo. Great reaction guys. I'm from the South and saw them do this at Memorial Stadium in Charlotte, NC on July 13, 1974. It was Under the Stars festival. It featured a lineup of ZZ Top, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Rare Earth, Leon Russell, Elvin Bishop, and Billy Preston. That was about 12 hours of my life I would not trade for anything! Certainly brings back memories, by memory the displaying of the confederate flag was quite controversial, Neil Young wrote Southern Man 👨, Lynyrd Skynyrd responded with Sweet home 🏡 Alabama, Neil Young is quoted as saying he wished he'd thought more about his lyrics, they actually became good friends with Ronnie Van Zant even wearing a Neil Young tshirt to go see him play live
they did a festival in the uk the rolling stone invited them mic jaggar told them not to go on the tongue part of the stage so as they did this song and started the guitar solo ronnie vanzant escorted theboys out on the tongue mic was mad ... hard to say stones when skyryrd is on your tongue lol
The greatest "redneck orchestra" to ever grace a rock stage live...........period...........bar none! Saw them live in August, 1976 in Nashville with The Atlanta Rhythm Section & The Outlaws as their opening act. Guitarist Steve Gaines was literally brand new to the band, having just joined them a couple of months before. Nobody was as white hot onstage or did it the way Skynyrd did it prior to their October, 1977 plane crash. You guys being Brits might not like this comment, but they blew The Stones asses off the stage at the Knebworth Festival in 1976, and used to reguarly get written reviews saying they were outplaying The Who when they were their opening act on The Who's Quadrophenia tour in 1973. These old wild eyed southern boys from the west side of Jacksonville, Florida were bad ass!
This is great but I like Knebworth, 1976 better. The cameras focus more on the guitar army and Skynyrd managed to really tick off Mick Jagger. The Stones were promoting a new album called Hot Licks that featured a tongue graphic. So Mick had a tongue shaped catwalk built onto the stage and ordered all the other bands to stay off it. Well, Ronnie Van Zant put his guitar army on the catwalk for the Free Bird solo! LS had the crowd in such a frenzy, Mick refused to come out for hours! Loved your reaction to this! For a fantastic piano solo, listen to "They Call Me The Breeze". It has a New Orleans style piano solo in it.
1977-Before High Fructose Corn Syrup. The Fat-Kid was unusual and generally hereditary. We had music to actually move to and not the fouled-up, plinky, boom boom, cussing nursery-rhyme excuse for music that they come out with nowadays.
Ahhh, a classic track from the '70's! I would guess that today's "classic rock" stations probably only play it on holiday weekends when they do those weekend long countdowns of the best rock 'n' roll songs, etc., since it's a rather long one. A combined 19.0 seems a bit rich to me, but I'm not going to quibble! Thanks again Chris, Alex and George!
How can guitarists play like that and jump at the same time? Without seeing anything because of all that hair? It was an amazing performance. The grand piano was great🤩. Nice to see scoreboard and wheel of for-tune united again. It is a little old fashioned, but good to see that the automatic system works as seamless as ever.
It's been way too long since I've listened to my Lynyrd Skynyrd album. I used to have Gimme back my bullets, the title song and Roll gypsy roll were my favourites, but a so called "friend" nicked it, so I later bought a best of album on CD. Didn't need it for ages cos all my friends had at least one album of theirs and free bird was played to death 🤣 Anyway, geez I miss the music of my teens, so please do explore this era more, with bands like Little Feat, Rodriguez, Boz Scags, Bob Sieger, BTO and Jo Cocker etc, too many to mention, but what an era to remember! 💕🥰🤌 P. S. Yaaay, I love Joan Armatrading!

This was simply an amazing live performance, in the second half. The first half ... any self-respecting cover band could have matched them ... but not in the later stages, that's why Lynyrd Skynyrd were one of the premier sounds of the 70s. On a side note, the band name would make a password hackers nightmare. Throw in a few capital letters and some symbols and it would be unbreakable. They were such forward thinkers.
I was at this concert, July 2, 1977. The whole set Skynyrd played was great, including this rendition of Free Bird. But I think there were at least two other live performances of them playing this song that are superior. Doesn't mean I don't like this one, the band could do no wrong playing anything live. Next up was Lynyrd Skynyrd, and finally Peter Frampton was the headliner. Most of the crowd was there for Skynyrd, probably 2/3 left after their set, but Frampton did a good job anyway.
@@TheThamesmen Bill Graham spoiled those of us living in the San Francisco Bay Area in the 70's by bringing a top band to the area practically every week. What a time to be alive and experience some of the best music ever. By the way, I like your style in doing these reactions. Worthy of me becoming a subscriber.
I highly doubt you were there because none of the crowd left. Frampton Comes Alive was the hottest ticket at the time--I was mainly there for Skynyrd but no way would miss Frampton strumming his guitar. Frampton did piss of the crowd a bit because they were shooting off fireworks for the 4th between sets and Frampton comes out and says, "Are we here to shoot off bloody fireworks or listen to music." Not a great statement made by the Brit, and he got a few boos but soon won back over the crowd after a few great riffs.
@@tomyocum6003 You obviously don't know shit about this concert. To say "none of the crowd left" is ridiculous. Much of the crowd on the ground near the stage remained for Frampton. But in the stands, the entire stadium in the first base area was completely empty; this is why I was able to move there from my original seat to get a better view and get out of the hot sun. You don't believe I was there? Stick it up your fucking ass.
Actually no. Peter Frampton was the headliner for this show in Oakland, hence all the girls. The Stones show was the one in the UK where they walked out onto the "tongue" part of the stage when they had been specifically told not to. The video for that show is actually better since the camera wasn't focused on the audience so much.
You know you could use green marker as invisible ink on that fancy scoreboard... Freebird is a great song, maybe a little overplayed. Once in a while it is a great listen though! That pause before they rip into it is perfect for doing it live. And hey, Ronnie Van Zant going to the back part of the stage during the fireworks is great too!
NEXT UP ....LOU REED - SWEET JANE WITH INTRO '73.....BLACKFOOT ...HIGHWAY SONG.....THE OUTLAWS - GREEN GRASS AND HIGH TIDES....JOURNEY - STONE IN LOVE LIVE HOUSTON '81...JUST TO NAME A FEW.....
Song/video was cut at least 1 minute on this concert, live at knebworth festival, isn't cut and much better. They blew the stones OFF the stage!!!!! And went out on the tongue during the solo, which mick jaeger warned all the bands not to do. Ronnie didn't care, and made the guitarists come out on it. Ronnie was a street fighter and would have gladly took on the stones backstage.
Best to offer a continental breakfast in the morning. Much easier to not mess up the good impression you have hopefully made the night before and way less dangerous naked. As for freebird it simply has to get an airing at least once a year. Maybe should have gone for a 100point scoring system to give you a bit more space to manoeuvre.
This version is actually kind of bad compared to the August 21, 1976 version. They spend most of the song in this version showing the crowd instead of the band.
There is a story that I have heard repeated a few times that in the early days Lynyrd Skynyrd were supporting Wishbone Ash on a US tour and obviously hearing Phoenix every night, a long song with a calm beginning and a rocky guitar ending. Shortly afterwards they wrote Free Bird. It's a good story, the truth of which we will probably never know.
I can't believe you being English didn't do Live Knebworth "76" it's better much better it focused on the band much more so than the audience , they actually played a little better , AND AFTER BEING TOLD NOT TO Ronnie had his boys playing out on Mick's tounge I don't know why everyone defaults to Oakland but again Knebworth 76 is much better check it out for yourselves take the Pepsi challenge ! NEXT UP ....LOU REED - SWEET JANE WITH INTRO '73.....BLACKFOOT ...HIGHWAY SONG.....THE OUTLAWS - GREEN GRASS AND HIGH TIDES....JOURNEY - STONE IN LOVE LIVE HOUSTON '81...JUST TO NAME A FEW.....
Jump Jenny, jump.....
Maybe should have gone for a 100point scoring system to give you a bit more space to manoeuvre.
good idea about the 100 point scoring
Sci Fi - Good call........
love that version. i feel a joe cocker at woodstock coming up?
Not yet but we need a Woodstock week
I burnt a couple on the fridge ice maker???🤔 can you figure it out?
Shame so many people do the 77 Oakland version. The 1976 Knebworth version is so much better.
This version is actually kind of bad compared to the August 21, 1976 version. They spend most of the song in this version showing the crowd instead of the band.
I love this version ❤❤❤ Thanks for sharing! Krakatoa level for me...
Ohhhhh... Old days.....Krakatoa
@@TheThamesmen Definitely a 9.8... sorry George but you scored this WAY TOO LOW...
knebworth was a better version but this is still great.
Not accurate. Freebird was written in 69 or 70 when Skynyrd was still playing bars and small local venues.
No Tattoos no piercings no Fat girls🤗
I know. So much health.
Need some more southern rock! Try some Molly Hatchet, “Flirting with disaster “ . Another great band and song.
Thanks
9.2 for this performance is way too low, absolute classic
This may be the greatest live performance in all of history.
WHO DEY 🖤🧡🖤🧡🖤🧡🖤🧡🖤🧡🖖✌️🤟💯😎
Monty Python esq
Yes, this is one live version that gets it right! Well done lads.😍 I will say one thing though.....history will regret that disgusting flag behind them.....a real pity.🤮
most overrated guitar "solo" (3 different guitarists) in history. Most of it is just playing the same couple of notes over and over and over again, ad nauseam. I like the studio version, especially the first half.
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
Nowhere near san fran city boy

Omg!!! Gotta have you on the show. We’d hammer abnd tong it!!!
