  • *DISCLAIMER: Hacking into any sort of public warning system is a felony. The activation tones used in this video are to notify me & other siren enthusiasts when a siren is about to activate, give me & others an idea on which type of tones are used to activate these sirens (i.e. two-tone, FSK, DTMF), and for the sake of enjoyment. They are not intended to be used to set off any siren or system of sirens whenever we feel like it.
If any of you misuse the tones in this video, I will not cover for you and you will be held fully accountable for your actions. Also, if any of you own a two-way radio, make sure it is turned off before watching this video since they can apparently transmit activation tones in a video format.
Since St. Patrick's Day fell on a 3rd Wednesday this year, I decided to celebrate that occasion by driving to Delavan to record their Decot Red Arrow Model 12. I originally planned on getting a video of this siren in February, but when I drove up here with Dominic (VirtualStormProductions) that month, it, as well as other sirens in Delavan & Walworth County did not activate. When we called the police department, they informed us that they wouldn't be testing their sirens due to the frigid cold temperatures and the large amounts of snow & ice everywhere.
They also pointed out that they usually don't test their sirens in the winter due to those factors. I guess that can be a good thing since testing outdoor technology such as sirens in teen temperatures can damage their electrical/mechanical components. It really demonstrates how well Delavan is doing at maintaining their siren system including their Decot. This month since it was warmer, I had higher hopes that Delavan would be testing, but still called the police department to make sure of it. Lo and behold, they responded to me by saying that siren testing would take place as planned.
Sadly, Dominic wasn't able to head up here today, but I at least got to meet up with Adam (metraking192) at the same location. This Decot is located at the town's police department at the corner of 2nd St (County Route O). These unique, historical sirens were first built in 1922 by Theodore (Ted) Decot (hence the last name) in a shop in Sauk City, WI. Two of the first installs were in the towns of Sauk City (of course) and Reedsburg, WI.
Decots were available in many different port ratios: 10/15, 10/16, 15, 6/10 (prototype), and 15/20 (which was extremely rare). This one happens to be 10/16 port. Back then, their purpose was to perform daily noon whistles as well as serve as a fire siren. These sirens were proven to be very efficient, and can be heard from miles away on a clear day. Nowadays, most Decots have either been replaced or decommissioned causing there to be less active ones remaining.
While most towns with active Decots still continue the tradition of using it to conduct noon whistles as well as for tornado warnings and fire calls, other towns use it to conduct full tests and for tornado warnings. Delavan happens to be an example of a town that uses their Decot for two purposes excluding fire calls. The fact that they now test this siren for 3 minutes in alert on test days definitely makes it worth the visit, especially since the county's sirens test for a shorter amount of time.
Despite the Decot sounding under-pitched due to its age, I'm glad I finally got an opportunity to film one doing a full test. You'll even get to hear the epic wind-up & wind-down that this siren has regardless if it does a noon whistle or actual test. In addition to the fact that Delavan does a decent job at maintaining their siren system, it was claimed in 1930 that students at the Wisconsin School of Deaf (which is located on Walworth Ave) could sense the chord the Decot produces when in the active state. For that reason, I can definitely picture Delavan keeping this siren alive for several more years.
Let's hope those leprechauns didn't tamper with the Decot after Adam & I left for it not being green, LOL!!! The town of Delavan used to perform noon whistles on their sirens daily, but nowadays, they test on the 3rd Wednesday of each month (if it's not too cold, snowy, or icy during the winter months) at 12:00 PM with the rest of Walworth County. However, the police department may sometimes test their sirens later than usual if they are busy dealing with another situation around that time. Today, the sirens were set off 3 minutes late.
Curious to see how this Decot performed noon whistles when the town used to do that on all their sirens daily? Click the link below to a video I filmed of it back in August of 2019: • Decot Red Arrow Model ...

Not very popular but insanely rare. Decot sirens have been discontinued since around the 1950s, so to find one is quite hard. Not many left in the country

@@CombatBuckee Before that. Decot stopped making sirens in 1940.

Usually on my UA-cam video titles, I state both the type and the model of the siren before the word "siren."
