When first I heard of Pentecost, I thought it was a shame
For such a band of people to lift up Jesus' name
But they said they taught the Bible, and I did not want to doubt
So I went down to see them, and to hear them sing and shout

Some were shouting "hallelujah," some were falling in the floor
They were dancing in the Spirit from the pulpit to the door
They were quaking, they were shaking as one by one they fell
And when I saw a brother shake I thought he'd had a spell

So I sat a little longer wondering what my folks would say
I knew they did not like them in this Pentecostal way
For just a day or two ago I heard my Father say that
When he got religion, he didn't act that way!

I didn't care who saw me, the Spirit had control
