Philipp Scheucher Plays Liszt Transcendental Etude #4 "Mazeppa" ` Munich Airport

  • "Come play a Steinway" says the sign by the piano. Luckily for me, this was enough temptation for concert pianist Philipp Scheucher to give us a free concert! He was practicing for his concert in Lviv, Ukraine. His website is www.philippscheucher.com and there are other videos of him on youtube from piano competitions and appearances.

      Most people hate mazeppa when hearing it for the first time. I think if someone would play it in a mall as loud as it's supposed to be played they would get kicked out. But i've been listening to it for like 3 months at this point it's so good

    People like simplicity. I seen other videos that people are performing in the street with a simple chord and everyone stops and sees with amazement. This guy is playing a very hard song that only professionals would venture into that realm but no one cares like if they hear that before. How sad.

The people that stop are the people that know this piece. I’ve never seen this performed in person, and if I ever got to stand right next to the piano and watch someone play this, it would be something I’d brag about for the rest of my life.

    I know some people might insult me haha, but let’s be honest, people stop and listen only when they hear something lovely, and we can’t really say that it’s easy to appreciate Liszt. He wrote absolute beauties, but 90% of his repertoire is way too “artistic” and “virtuose”.
    Recently I read a book about Chopin (“Chopin, prince of the romantics” by Adam Zamoyski) and Chopin said in a letter something like this : “Nobody equals Liszt at the piano, but in terms of composition, no one will remember his melodies.”
    And I think he’s right...while people can remember hundreds of Chopin’s melodies, they can only a few of Liszt’s.

    • @em8714
      @em8714 3 роки тому +10

      You also have to remember Liszt composed a lot after Chopins death and one his most famous pieces (liebestraum no.3) was composed right after his death. Liszt became less flashy as he aged and focused more on the musical side of things.

      That is quite harsh from his friend Chopin... His Rhapsodies, Sonata in B minor, Ballade in B minor, and Liebestraume series (particularly No.3), not to mention his own emotional variation on a Chopin piece as a memorial of Chopin's passing... he was extremely productive in his later life and wrote poignant and beautiful pieces that were in fact ahead of their time.
