Man I played the hell out of this game as a kid but I'd always end up with a B rank, it wasn't until much later I learned how the ranking works and was able to get A rank 😅
As Gabriel said, it's based on score. Time bonuses are pretty generous, but even blitzing to the end at TAS speed isn't going to give you enough score for the A. You have to grind out at least half of the required points destroying enemies, gathering rings, and doing tricks. Imviz777 is right, once you know score is more important than speed, most of the A ranks are pretty simple. Ironically, Knuckles and Rouge are the only 2 where speed is the important factor to getting the A. You still want to go quick, for sure, but trying to race the clock instead of focusing on big point caches isn't going to net you A ranks. Not realizing just how important score really was is probably why this game kicked mine and many other people's ass at a younger age.
