- Peachy takes you through two ways to paint the Gallowdark scenery from the Kill Team Into the Dark boxset. The first is using Dirty Down rust and the second using regular citadel paints to achieve a rust like effect.

This is what I love about Peachy, right to the point and gets it done perfecting. And, 3 different ways to do it makes this video a prime tutorial.
Laser focused!
EDIT: Just to clarify, I was trying to say I didn't realize how much GW squashes the presenters' personalities as I've realized Peachy is awesome. Looking forward to more content, Peachy!
Gonna be real - wasn't a fan of peachy on WHTV tutorials (not that I watch them much anymore). However, Peachy 2.0 un-caged and un-chained is way better. This series is great since I've had this box assembled but unpainted as I'm working on my HH army and can't be bothered. A speedpainting tutorial is exactly what I've needed. Glad to see you free, Peachy. New favorite painting channel.
It does often seem like gw painters don't have much passion or personality in official tutorials. I think that's why Duncan and Louise became so popular
Aww thanks man, I’m just happy to be myself and do the things I think will help - peachy
There is quite strict rules on the WHTV tutorials, they're selling a painting system and teaching painting within that structure, which isn't always the easiest or quickest way. Peachy can do what he likes here!
In Peachys defense and he will attest, But WHTV is a GW program and GW sells a paint system and products so their tutorials are very systematic and not allowed room for coloring outta the lines!
@@DickWindu I think they all ended up trying to copy Duncan and come across as pale imitations. Poorer enunciation despite more robotic, constant jerky nonsensical head movements emphasizing words that shouldn't be emphasized, etc etc.
I’d like to commend you guys on your format.
You’ve nailed the balance where you show the actual pieces the video is about (no long shots of irrelevant B-roll), you’re sticking to the point and keeping it nice, simple and most importantly fun and with human emotion. Instead of overly formal, like some other certain place.
A pleasure to watch, well done.
😁👍 cheers Were loving providing such useful and fun guides for you - peachy
well said. especially agree with your point about irrelevant b-roll. a lot of miniature-related creators fill their videos with completely unnecessary b-roll footage that just feels pretentious - not 52 Miniatures though, his b-roll footage is amazing (probably because he's a professional photographer)! :P
@@ecMonify If I have to see another miniature painter set up their table and pan over their light fixtures or "artistic lightbulbs" I'll throw a pewter model at them.
The same with Duncan. They were both clearly suppressed in what they could say with GW.
This channel is gonna blow up because of Peachy but...Dammn that Dirty Down Rust
Notably, thinning the dirty-down is what gave your rust effect a lot more variation. Neat it can be quite dark, then you can fiddle with it with adding water which changes the effect.
Lovely guide, that dirty down paint looks fascinating, I was surprised at how it turned from a clear liquid into a real particle effect!
Thanks guys
Looks worth picking up, I will probably buy a bottle alongside my next AK base paint.
I remember first using the Dirty Down product about 6 years ago while working in a costume department for a theatre production (we'd use the spray can variant to quickly add dirt/grime to costume) nice seeing it again in the miniature community! :)
I’d heard it was used for theatre and film, interesting that it came in spray can too. Great stories to hear thanks for sharing - peachy
Keep 'em coming! This three part videos centered on all the contents of a single box is very useful, you should consider it for every one released. Well, at least the one you like of course 😅
Yeah it was fun to do, takes a bit of time to prep and film, but we’ll worth it, especially if it helps hobbyists get stuff on the tabletop.
These new edits and high tempo are a HUGE inspiration for me as a youtuber! Super enjoyable to watch! Love!
Thanks, I have Pat to thank for all the awesome visuals, the guys a wizard! - peachy
Peachy unchained from the GW interment camp! I haven't been this happy since Duncan took the leap!
It's great to see legends working their magic on other things/products!
Hahaha! Cheers
Holy Hannah! I've been using Dirty Down for maybe a year now and I did not know about the hairdryer trick! That looks amazing. My usage of it has gone to plaid!
Excellent ! Thx !
2:30 genuinely looks like magic! :P i've got a pot of Dirty Down Rust waiting to be opened myself, gonna use it for some Star Wars Legion terrain - a crashed TIE fighter and an AT-ST! :D
Ooh lovely, I’d like to see some pics of that
Love the video Peachy! Glad to see you branch out!
You guys are killing it! Also repping the F&D water pot sticker - Z
Luv ya peach! A true ray of sunshine in the hobby. Never leave buddy.
So happy to see Peachy on this channel. He is the reason I subscribed. Love the simple painting techniques.
Cheers, we’ll I hope these tips and hacks help you out in your painting hobby 👍👍👍 - Peachy
Holy! That looks absolutely gorgeous 😍 the rust is dark magic 😍
Absolutely, I have never been more overawed and impressed by a product. - peachy
The rust effects are fantastic, but I'd really like to see the moss effect in action should you have a pot of that. I'm loving the style of these videos, keep it up chaps.
Well I’ve recently acquired a lot of the moss, so it’s certainly something to look at doing down the line.
Great and simple!
Great video. Really enjoy the inclusion of the peachy bloopers!
Wonderful! Glad you enjoyed them, we do have a giggle, seems a shame to not include some of them.
It's a miracle in a bottle that dirty down!!
It i so nice to see you on UA-cam painting again Peachy, I've missed seeing your take on painting the models over at Games Workshop. In almost every video I see with you, no matter if it is an army I play or not there is something to pick up that I can apply when painting my stuff.
Aww cheers, I’m pleased I’ve been able to help. Much love - Peachy
these new peachy videos are FANTASTIC!
Glad you're enjoying them!
That dirty down rust looks good. Might need to buy a pot to paint up my ork terrain.
You won’t regret it
This is really top stuff, very easy to follow. Nice one Peachy
I’m pleased you think so, and I hope it helps 👍👍👍 - Peachy
Great to see you here Peachy! This rust technique is amazing! Definitely a new tool in my kit going forward.
Yep I was blown away when I used it! - peachy
I haven’t started painting my Kill Team terrain yet, but already have a couple pot of Dirty Down Rust ready.
Peachy, what you did with the red contrast around the door blew my mind. It was so simple but got an amazing result. Superb video 🥳
Thanks, yeah I reckon you could do it with some of the other newest contrasts tones too. - peachy
I will 100% be using this on my Necrominda Terrain. Loving the effect and small details. Rust for the rust god!
Ohhh loving the new home for Peachy!! Anf that even though your using the dirty down giving an alternative for others as it can be a bit expensive for people starting
We're trying to keep things as affordable as possible in an already expensive hobby!
That stuff is really impressive
Yep it was a game changer for us
Will be implementing your methods! Glad to see a channel see more quick and dirty ways to get things onto the table that look fantastic without doing hours of edge highlighting.
Yep, that’s the goal, get them minis and figs on that tabletop as soon as possible, but still proud of the end result 👍
Just stumbled upon your channel, it looks like Duncan since you left GW your tutorials have gotten a lot more practical. Thanks man I'll definitely be coming back for more!
Tbh that’s all I’ve wanted to do, teach useful practical techniques without the mysticism or wizardry lol
That stuff is freaking awesome 🤘👍
Just here to appreciate Peachy's mighty length!
Hahaha!
Stop that.
I use to do the rest I use the stuff from Hobby hobby like card making and paper making paint spray called distress oxide and it works great and there’s like you can there’s another trick to the stuff just add water and the stuff bleaches quickly and it works great for what I used it for I’m painting a graveyard and it has the fence and I use that and it works great just go to ranger you guys and get that stuff called distress oxide And it’s pretty cheaper then then hobby rest and stuff like that
Great advice, thanks.
Late to the party, but this video was hugely helpful - and pushed me to finally pick up some Dirty Down rust! I know you lads are no doubt busy with the new 40k box, but any chance we'll get a similar video covering the Ash Wastes terrain?
Awesome guide!! Id love you guys to give an ash wastes board a go! About to start my go soon!
Oooh interesting idea. Thanks so much.
This gives me some great ideas for the new box on preorder, and I too love the dirty down products. Definitely going to try the watered down mix too
great video! Thanks!
That dirty down rust is amazing. I would love to see it used on an actual mini - because hot damn, seeing some Necrons with that? Sounds sexy.
I’m really torn between rusting some necrons with this or going with their verdigris product to achieve a ‘’bioshock’’ underwater necron army. I think i’’l trybthe verdigris say with some rusty spots
I’ve used it on a mini and it looks fab - peachy
One of the best vids I’ve seen on using this stuff. And it’s great to see Peachy again. Only question I have, which I can’t seem to find answered properly anywhere is can this rust stuff be varnished afterwards? I’ve heard just handling the stuff can re-activate it and smudge it off easily.
So it will reactivate with water, and tbh I’ve rarely got any form of moisture on my terrain, so it’ll be rare that that’ll happen and if it does it will just sort its self out.
If you do try varnish let us know how it goes, as I’ve not tried that myself
Great inspiration thx!!
getting some real Nebuchadnezzar vibes from those green monitors next to that rusted iron...
A quality reference! You're absolutely right!
Loving Peachy unleashed!
that rust paint is magic!
It ain’t cheap but it is good.
Very nice! I like how those screens turned out!
Simple and effective!
Yoooooo, peachy's personality comes out!!!
Fantastic effects. Brings such life to the hobby.
PEACHY!!! I love the new content 🎉
Thanks! 😍😍😍
These vids are great Peachy ❤
Cheers Glen, feels great to be free, but Pats the genius here 😁👍 - Peachy
My Hero❤
Another banger of a video! And if anybody is limited to just Citadel paints but wants a rust wash, take a tiny scoop of Ryza Rust (with your texture paint tool), add it to a dry palette, and then add a bit of Agrax Earthshade (for darker rust) or Seraphim Sepia. Mix it really well so you don't get bright orange chunks, and you'll get a similar effect. That's what I'm using on my Necromunda terrain right now.
Brilliant advice, thanks for sharing 👍👍👍 - peachy
Loving these vids, and really enjoying Peachy's presentation style and painting! Keep it coming!!!
Great video :D I'm a fan of how they're broken up, into sections. That are easly referenced in your shorts very helpful
Yeah Pats a very smart guy for helping sort out those short vids from the main one.
You know what makes drybrushing large scenery go much faster? Honking big makeup brush as a drybrush 😉
Thanks Peachy, great video. I've pretty well finished assembling the new Warcry scenery (Ghur) - would be great so see how you'd tackle that in a similar timeframe.
Yeah, got a fair few vids on the go, but it’s on my radar 👍
Great video. Nice job putting the Citadel paint alternative in, tho that dirty down stuff looks like a handy tool to add to the arsenal. Cheers!
You just gotta love the new Peachy! Looking forward to more stuff along those lines…
Looking forward to it as well 😍👍 -peachy
These videos are brilliant!
Amazing results! Thx for that awesome tutorial!
Looks great, can’t wait to get my box.
Great video, really liked the way they paints turned out.
Great work as usual Peachy. 👍
Wow, I need to try this with my terrain - great result!
This is the video i needed!
Thanks so much for this 🤘😁
Amazing! I'm guna wait till I get my shadow fall set and do both sets of terrain in one massive go!
Great video. I am just gobsmacked that GW sells a product that requires power tools to fix before assembly. I just lost a Saturday buying and using a Dremel power sander in order to fit the pieces together. Disgraceful. Your video on the other hand is excellent.
I rarely comment on videos but this one is really one of ur best!!!
Thanks, we’re pleased you like it. 😍👍
Yes! I am already searching all over the web to get the dirty down rust xD
yep it is super simple but you can not paint over it as it reactivates when wet.
so it have to be used last when used.
We've painted over it here knowing it reactivates, adds to the worn look!
Chaps, that sub count is growing. 👍
Ah man why did I not have this idea. I did the whole taping thing too, this would have been so much easier! 😅
Great vid as usual with excellent production quality and information. Peachy! Now that you’re free to use non citadel colours, try out Vallejo metal colour Dark Aluminium in place of leadbelcher! It’s a great colour match and has the best metallic coverage you’ll ever experience in your life! So far both The Painting Coach and a certain painting team that really likes ‘heavy metal’ music have been converted. 😉😂
Hahaha! Yeah I’ve heard nothing but good things about that paint - peachy
hehe now i know how i'll paint my moroch scenery set ! it stands out really nice. i didn't understood what you meant in the last interview but now i do !
Yeah witchcraft in a bottle
Heresy Heresy Heresy! Finally the master of citadel paints uses paints from other companies. Welcome to the dark side fella!
😂👍 and I’m loving it - peachy
Please continue to do how to paint a whole box like this!
This channel has the best cinematography and production, its so well done, timed, and filmed. The audio is on point, the lightning. I want to learn that stuff too, your channel has SO much to offer the hobby enthusiast. I want to film and take pictures of my board games for my social media and make them look as fantastic as I can.
Is it possible to get a behind the scenes video on how you make your videos look so great?
Thanks, much appreciated! We've had a few people ask so it's something we'll probably do in the future, unsure when but it'll definitely happen.
Oh wow, that dirty down stuff is something else huh! I've seen the rust and the other colours they do when i've been in element games, but honestly I never thought to give it a try since the label looked like it was done with word art and I didnt think it'd be that great, never judge a book by its cover eh!
Ha! Yeah it amazing, not tried the others but I’m sure if I do I’ll put a vid up so you can see the effects 👍
This is a great video thanks Peachy and the team! I'm actually skipping the silver dry brush step and instead using damp cotton buds to streak the dirty down (like you do with AK Interactives Grime and some white spirit).
Question: does anyone know how Dirty Down reacts to Matt spray varnish (I usually use Humbrol specifically).
❤
Liking what I see! My only constructive comment (not even a criticism) is that the title makes it sound like it's going to be a video about using army painter speed paints
Well I can see that, as they named a range of products on a particular painting technique, but I’ve always used the term speed painting, so I can’t think of any other way of describing it lol - peachy
*stares at set of Ork terrain basecoated for 6 months*
Video will land me some finished terrain. Music will land me a second kid! Nice job boys lol
Hahaha! Smooth 😘👌
7:20 the piece of scenery with the skull and sword in it's mouth - I have this in my set but it's not listed in the assembly instructions so I am royally confused!
That’s not scenery, it’s the measurement tool for playing the game. I hope that helps.
Much better than the old GW painting vids you used to do Peachy! Is this your new home? Either way, you’ve got a new Sub
🙏🙏🙏 thank you! - Peachy
Does the heat improve the effect of the dirty down, or just speed it up?
Both, I did use it without heat and it had a mild rust effect
Is AK’s Streaking Grime a sort of suitable equivalent? I have a couple pots and variants of that but no DD rust yet
I used the AK rust variants of streaking grime, until DD Rust came out and generally thought they were great.
Great video.. I'd like your take and opinion and maybe use Musou Black.. The blackest of black paint
So how do you seal this stuff? When I used varnish, it ruined the effect. I think it is water based varnish, so that’s probably why.
We just haven't sealed it, don't plan to get it wet and if any rubs off we can just put some more rust back on.
It would be great a video tutorial for blue rust. People do it with nihilakh oxide and its so difficult 😣😖😫😭
When we get to a mini that has old brass/copper we’ll be sure to show how we do it. I personally (Geoff) don’t use Nihilakh oxide. I prefer actual turquoise paints.
I've done some of my walls as guided here and they look great tbh. They do lack of a bit of contrast though, and I'm guessing that's because you're not doing any shading right? Maybe I sprayed a bit too much leadbelcher on? Any advice would be super! TIA.
Yeah for speed the spray is key for that shading, so probs you applied too much leadbelcher, but a Nuln oil shade before the rust goes on could help.
Thanks for the tutorial!
May I apply the Dirty Down Rust with an airbrush, or are there concerns with this?
Hmm, honestly I’m not sure, I’ve not heard anything to say. It too, but then most folks use it sparingly in little area and apply with a brush, I was just mental and wanted to drench the scenery in it.
when I have used the dirty down rust I get a good brown grime appearance but I never get the orangey rusty colour. Does anyone have any idea what I am doing wrong?
No matter how i try to emulate it i cant replicate what your terrain looks like with dirty down. Ive got the same product, tried watering it down, tried using it straight from the pot, heated up the plastic before hand, tried thining it down and slathering it allover then adding bigger drops straight from the pot, it always looks yellowy brown where as yours look orange and red. It also never seems to look how yours does at 4:49. Where the whole thing has orangey rust spots, i really wanted that effect and cant for the life of me get it to do that. Any help?
Hmm, so as a hobbyist who’s still pretty new to the product, all I can think of is that it might need a stir and a shake. I do put it on a high heat with my hair drier, for about 30+ seconds.
@@thepaintingphase I'll give it a good stir and try again, it could well be that. I'm wondering if their is some sweet spot in the middle as to how much it should be watered down. It seems to either just turn the metal a kind of yellowy brown like a wash if i water it down too much and if i dont water it down at all it just stays kind of black. Thanks for the quick reply!
How easily do the caps come off the walls after spraying them? I am about to dive into painting Boarding Actions terrain
Once you’ve sprayed them they should just flick off with a little pressure, I’ve set them up and broke them down a few times since painting them and they work fine
Subbed mate, I'm happy you've got this space! Is half your hair dyed red or is that just lighting? Lol
Ha! That must be the light, or the spirit of what was once my hair 😂
This paint seems like actual witchcraft.... get the pitchforks!
Hahaha! 🔥🔥🔥
How well does the dirty down rust work over non-metallics?
Well I used it on the crates and I liked the end result see the dried version at 7:26 - cheers peachy
Do you varnish the pieces after finishing painting?
No, it will reactivate the rust and apparently it ruins the effect. We've left ours unvarnished and if it does ever come off after so many uses just reapply the rust.
@@thepaintingphase thanks for the info, thats good to know, ill leave mine unvarnished...cheers!
My dirty down doesn't seem to work which is a shame since it costs a fair bit, it seems to be a large clump in the bottle and even trying to mix it it won't work :(
Think it's dried out or something? Maybe give the lump a stab with the end of a paint brush or something to break it up?
