G'day Chris. I watched in awe the arrival and unloading of the little beast. Comparing the movements to the first time you were on the controls to now is like a whole world of difference. This has almost become an extension of your arms just like your other machines. Your fine gentle movements, not jerking and bumping. It's a pleasure to watch an operator who cares about the machine as if it was his own. Volvo certainly picked the right bloke to lend there precious machine too. Good on ya mate.
Well, I was hoping for a big pond build series from Chris and this certainly qaulifies as that. Absolutely a blast watching him dig 2 and a half scoops to fill the field truck in that monster bucket. It's definitely going to be deep enough for basic diver training.
Excellent photography. I think it's the result of good camera placement and the early morning light. That is a deep hole, but too much sunlight makes it harder to see and appreciate.
Dude we need a walk around the 550 please! Damn. What a beast! The bucket with a full scoop is as big as the dozer! Man extremely cool, Chris. Damn cool!
23:52 puts it all into perspective. That machine moves a LOT of dirt in a hurry. Certainly making that pond dam construction go a lot faster on this site.
Chris you're basically the best ambassador for volvo in the USA 🇺🇸 I still have a sneaky suspicion that a 550 could make its way into your ever growing fleet for the big pond jobs.Imagine having the 550 on the bealy good pond .If you're gonna do more big pond jobs eventually the benefits of less man hours will outweigh the cost of transporting this beast .If nothing else it would open up new & bigger projects for Chris's expansion & expertise.
Hauling more Dirt and Pond Dam Building ! Great Progress already ! Wow - Great Shot of the Bucket Digging from Ground Level - very Impressive indeed ! You got soooooo much more Work done with the Bigger Bucket ! The hight of the Dam Wall will be Huge ! Nice Dozer Work Trimming ! We enjoyed the Video and many Cheers from us in Australia !!!!
Chris you’ll need some very large matts to hold that beast up. That would make a great pond clean out video. Or a great recovery video. Just a thought. Keep up the great work.
Wow you DID move dirt. Wonderful to see, and I love how much fineness you can do with any sized excavator, from a tiny mini to that behemoth. Thanks for sharing this, Chris. These are going to be fun pond builds to watch.
@@donaldalexanderrichards4422 Sorry, no. Not an excavator expert. I'm just admiring one. All I know is that the bucket on the 550 can hold 6 cubic yards of dirt. The 48" bucket on his 220 can hold 2.5 cu yd (I think he can get it to move 3 but I'm not sure).
This looks like it might be a good sized pond. I can't wait to see the progress and find out how many acres it will be when finished. I love watching these pond projects!
Really looking good. Looks like you are settling into the 550 just fine. She does make short work of digging. Your truck and dozer seem a little out matched. Thanks for sharing.
Awesome video Chris! I especially enjoyed when you set the camera low in the pond damn to capture both the 550E, the dozer and the height of the damn! Impressive! Hopefully more of these camera placements are planned down the road.
Some impressive work accomplished in half a day. Will the pond shape be a tear drop? I'm still looking for the flags. ha ha Take care Chris another round of winter storms on the way. Good video. Love the birds eye view of that giant bucket getting another mouthful of clay.
Man, wouldn't that be nice to have in your line up Chris !! lololol... May be one day you'll have one like it too add to your fleet !! That thing will flat out hog some dirt out in a hurry now !! lolol... I bet it's fun operating that Big Boy there, and can't imagine the power behind it !! lolol... Got it moving right on a long Chris, hopefully the weather won't get you guys to bad , and your able to get some head way on this one.... Great as always , Have a Great Evening, And, On too the Next !!
I love the Beast. So if im thinking right you can load the truck wirh 2 and a half bucket verses 8 or 9 with the 220. What im seeing is you can load or move 2 times as much material with the 550 than both 220"s. Im sure the 550 is alot more headache to transport than a 220 but you can keep a man busy moving material on the dozer with the 550 . So impressive. Thanks for showing us the Beast. Love it Love it Love it.
Watching this video I had 2 thoughts. 1. I remember back a year or so when you were playing with the 950 and it took 3 scoops for a A60 haul-truck. Maybe you should have tried for a bigger truck too ( 😄) and 2. I can just see Chris off camera. Getting that Tim "The Tool Man" Taylor attitude of MORE POWER... I want one!!! But I bet as much fun something like the 550 is, you probably wouldn't have enough work for one that big... but I bet its fun.😂😂
I’m in college in my senior year. I just recently made the switch the construction management/CE. I’ve always been interested in the industry, and gratefully finally learning a lot about a topic I’ve always had interested in. It’s really awesome to be able to watch a process like this and learn a lot from an on the ground perspective.
What's always impressed me is the precision that dirt can be shaped with at such a large scale. It think it's the contrast with how "natural" topographies look that is the impressive thing. When one of these ponds is built and the final water level is three or so feet from the rim of the dam along a distance of hundreds of yards that is just so cool.
Man Chris that pond is gonna turn out amazing, gonna be pretty that's for sure, that 550 is making quick work of it, that awesome, thanks for sharing an I look forward to seeing the next video 🇺🇲💪🤙✊👌👍
I must say Chris when you said that you had a BIG surprise for this job you were not getting one bit you're able to get a half of a pain done in only two days that's really doing something great job and thanks to Volvo or letting you use the 550 still a lot of work ahead but you'll get her done soon thank you for the video I'm able to keep up with you now LOL
Is that bank as steep as it looks??? It looks like the banks at Bristol Speedway in Tenn!!! You made me pucker at the end sir ;-) Is there a bank steep enough that you'd say NO to??? You're the man with balls of steel Mr LD18!!!
Your took the words right out of my mouth, lol. I have to agree with you. That would be a interesting. Thing to see how long it would take to dig the Bealy pond with the 550.
That’s one nice machine you already pretty smooth with it waiting to see the dam as you go i do believe it going to look awesome and huge 5:52pm NY 😎🇺🇸
I can never get over how "small" the bucket looks on camera. Same with the 250, then you went and stood by it one time and I was like, "damn, it is big." This one, same thing, then you hang the bucket over the truck in like, "Daaaaaaamn,, it's only going to take a couple scoops to fill that truck"
Nice work with the Big Girl. I saw where you could fit the thumb holder so it's really starting to make sense. You would have cut the time in half with the Bealy dam wall using the 550.
Big progress! It's going to be tough going back to the tiny 220. Hopefully you'll pick up a few 5 to 10 acre pond jobs before the demo clock runs out. The 550 is a bit of overkill for a lot of the jobs you do, and moving it can be a PITA, but it sure is nice when you want to move a lot of material in a short amount of time, isn't it? I'm wondering when they're going to install hydraulics to extend and retract the tracks on those beasts...
This machine, because it's a demo machine would be one of the very few machines that gets the tracks moved more that once or twice a year, many of them would be done once when the machine is moved to site, then once again when they sell it when there's too many hours on it.
Sure don’t take long to make a big ole hole in the ground with the 550, but guess that’s the idea of that machine. I like it when we get to some slickenem up at the end of the vid, it’s the LD 18 way. Thanks for the ride along sir.
That excavator moves a lot of dirt quickly. You should be able to complete this pond build in 1/3rd of the time it would take if you were doing all the digging with your excavator. The pond is going to be a deep one.
Okay, the 550 has a huge boom, a huge bucket, huge tracks, and a huge cab. How in the world does all that balance on one little center pin/swing drive? Amazing engineering to see such power and size rotating on a comparatively small unit. Glad Volvo loaned you this one to play with.

This was about a day and a half of work so far in the series and toward the end of this video he said he's used a half tank. 180gal tank, so 90gal. That's a whole lot of dirt moved for 90 gal of fuel.
I just love watching the precision you have in maneuvering that big girl. She just takes of business. Thanks for sharing and be safe.
This is great. Chris moving big yards of dirt, with a large machine. And it's a demo. When Chris said 200k tons moved, that brought it together.
Well done to volvo, for showing what "the beast" can do.....with a skilled operator. Maybe get a shot of you standing next to the bucket?
I was gonna ask the same thing , about standing beside the bucket!
2-3 videos back when they were unloading everything & putting everything together
It’s BIG
I saw a 480 on a trailer and thought that was huge can't imagine how big this 550 is
Surely standing in the bucket is a possibility
That pond is gonna be DEEP. Goodness. Love it.
Giant thank you to Volvo for making this happen. Think everyone enjoying it immensley❤❤❤

Is it on loan? Rented?

Fantastic Video Chris and I know from watching you for years that you are enjoying yourself on the 550 Volvo, good job.

Looking good Chris👍👍👍👍👍👍
hi Chris can i ask whats the fuel consumption on the 550 per day compared to your 220 and how much more yardage can you move super video thanks for sharing
Interesting question...
I’m not sure on this machine but I know that the 550 is 456Hp and I run a Case Quadtrac tractors that around 620 Hp which burns around 25 Gal/hr or around 400 Gals a day so I imagine it’s a little less maybe 250 to 300 gallons on a full day.
I asked about the yardage the other day , Chris said the 220 was 1.5 yard and the 550 was 5.5 yard bucket
Twice as much!
This was about a day and a half of work so far in the series and toward the end of this video he said he's used a half tank. 180gal tank, so 90gal. That's a whole lot of dirt moved for 90 gal of fuel.
