This is an amazing game and would be neat for segment 3 of NLSS!
This is one of my favorite board games, and it's pretty cool to see it in digital form now. They also really blew my expectations for it out of the water with all the 3D models and animation, though it's a shame it doesn't have either of the expansions.
I really hope you'll play this game more, and hopefully we can see it on the NLSS sometime in the future, too!

PS: I would love to see NLs analytical brain run the Eyrie.
Just the base game for now, but hopefully they'll get all the other expansions out!
I won't lie, I would LOVE to see a series on this. Especilly since you and Kate own the IRL game and have been wanting to play it. This is one of my favorite board games, and I would love to see you learn the ins and outs of all the different factions. One game as the cats just isn't seeing the whole thing.
Man, I've had the same experience with the Root physical board game. Excited to see how it translates to digital and how they tutorialize the game which seemed relatively complex.

This maybe good NLSS game but.... every body need go through tutorials. Cat are most streamlined faction in this game.
And other mechanics are so difrent so teaching "as it goes" is dificult.
So you're saying people need to be prepared and can't just go in blind. So not really a good NLSS game. Gotcha.
If this were a TTS version of the game, I'd definitely say this game has too many moving parts for NLSS to even attempt, but since it's a full featured digital version, I'd love to see them try to play while only halfway knowing what's going on. It's not any harder than riichi mahjong and most of them almost figured that out.
There are some Family Game Difficulty Level Board Games on Steam but this is not one of them.
People will get hyper confused.
@@fleasy4393 riichi can be introduced in couple of sentence and person can play it (badly but can). Every one play this same draw tile, dirscard tile, try build legal hand game.
Root... we all race to 30pts (or special card victory) but, if you play:
- Cats - you play fairly simple "dudes on map" game
- Eyrie- you play programing game, planing your future turns, and being penalized every time your program dont work
- Alliance - you play guerrilla warfare and you steal card from other player to be able to take any action
- Vagabond - you play Skyrim

As a Root fan, I was worried about the cost of it. I own both expansions and that's already a $100 investment. Definitely looks good though.
I’m also a big fan, I played it today a few times and the hard AI seems pretty competent!

@@halo7172 honestly most board games and expansions hover around $50-80 each so $100 for the base game and two expansions isn't that much tbh. There are individual games that cost twice that amount

@@halo7172 talisman is a roll to move rpg. It's a good gateway game. But because it's roll to move most in the hobby steer clear of it.

Would love to see a game with each of the Four Factions if possibly, considering how each faction has entirely different and unique gameplay styles.
The different base game factions are best summed up thusly:
Cats: Turn based strategy
Birds: Command line programming
Woodland Alliance: Plague Inc.
Vagabond: D&D
I adore Root, so glad you're checking it out. I agree it could be a good NLSS game, with the right group. Though I would advise that everyone go through all the tutorials ahead of time. Since it's asymmetrical, It helps immensely to have at least a general understanding of how all 4 factions work.
This is an incredible recreation of Root. The art has so much effort put into it. I’ll have to pick this up, as I’ve doubted my groups desire to play Root on tabletop.
He needs to play more. The other factions are so radically different!

As a owner of all expansions of Root I have to say I love it
NLSS game!
Nice! As much as I love Root, the multiplayer component of it is were it shines imo. The game is surprisingly thematic when you are able to banter with your friends about what's happening with all of the actions that you take, deals you cut, etc.
An excerpt from the physical board game included a messiah Vagabond that arose from obscurity to zealously lead the denizens of the cat population to follow the Lizard gods. The Messiah would lead cats to desert the frontlines, leaving a vulnerability that would end in the Bird armies penetrating into the mainlands to destroy the last standing forces of the colonialist invaders...leaving the lands willing and ready for the mass indoctrination of the new cult.
There are expansion factions already designed (Riverfolk Trading Company, Lizard Cult, Covid Conspiracy, Underworld Duchy) that greatly expand the scope of the game's allegorical themes on historical counter insurgency dynamics.
Would enjoy watching it on NLSS too! Seems neat overall.
OMG, NL tried another DWD game. And it was released just last week. There are so many reasons that I'm excited about this.

Hi NL, firstly, HUGE FAN of the tabletop game, I own it and it's beautiful and fun and amazingly assymetric. I hope you have a wonderful time playing it IRL!
secondly, and very very minor, but Marquis and Marquise are different. Marquis is male, and thus the 's' is silent, i.e "mar-kee". Marquise is feminine and thus the 's' is pronounced, i.e "mar-kees". Idk french be kinda weird.
Would love to watch this on the NLSS - or maybe Ryan vs. Kate on her stream, I think it would fit her style well
God I love Root, it's such a great boardgame. I didn't know there was a digital edition!
The only caveat I have about the game when I played with friends was that it can turn into a game of two or three pretty easily. The other player(s) who fall behind quickly know that they can't win, but usually they can't just leave either. If the games are short or the 'winning players' make a lot of mistakes it works out though. I'd love to see it on the NLSS.

As soon as I learned that Root was getting digital, I hoped NL would look at it.
As soon as I learned NL looked at Root, I hoped he would do a mini-series on it.
This comment may be farther down, but I haven't seen it. On the cards the little symbols like the bag and the crossbow are meant for the Raccoon character, the Vagabond. The cards are usable by all the factions, so they need all the relevant info for each different faction's rules. That just means there is some useless info on the cards for each faction as well.
So stoked to see this! NL would you consider trying out gloomhaven digital?
Root is such a fun game, but I think you should play Twilight Imperium on TTS for the NLSS.
I need this played on the NLSS super excited to get my physical copy but the digital version might hold me over in the meantime

This is minor and nitpicky but my favorite thing about the board game is the little cute pieces which they didn't go with here, kind of a bummer
Dang are you saying it looks better than this super high production value game?? These creators clearly know what they're doing I guess, board games usually are graphic poor and mechanics rich, feels like this one does both
Also NL, if you read the instructions of the board game, all uploaded to Boardgamegeek, it will help you a lot
I like asymmetrical strategy games (each player plays differently and with different objectives), I just don't think this game is all that much fun as a boardgame. Maybe it is different as a computer game with most stuff managed for you by the computer, I just found it to be an interesting theme with a poor execution on the table top. There are plenty of great boardgames that would make for good online fun with friends, this is not one of them.

Anyone knows how to have a chance against the robot marquise? We've tried all summer with friends but can't get near matching the 3 VP per turn. We only have the riverfolks extension.

More of this. This game's so cute and really interesting. What do the other factions do?
There are 3 other factions in the base game: The Eyrie (who NL played against), The Woodland Alliance, and The Vagabond.
The Eyrie are a totalitarian faction with very strict rules. They have a "decree": a set of actions they have to do every turn, and that they keep adding to. So the longer they go on the more actions they can take, but if they ever can't do one of the actions they go i to turmoil. This means they have to build up all their actions again.
The Woodland Alliance are a resistance/guerilla faction. They cause unrest and try to sway towns to their cause. If they get enough of a foothold they can cause a revolt, where they suddenly take over a town with a bunch of units. Usually they don't have many units on the map but they're very hard to put down.
The Vagabond is the final faction, and they play a totally different game. They only have one unit which cannot die. They slip from town to town and trade with the other factions. Remember those crossbows and "water sacks" on the cards? Those are items the Vagabond can buy from the other factions. It's equipment for them: swords and crossbows let them battle, sacks give them more inventory space, etc.
There's even more factions in the expansions (which aren't in the digital version yet), but there's already a lot of variety since each faction basically plays an entirely different game.

Can anyone who knows the game tell me what the sack and crossbow thingies were? It looked like there was an inventory where the first sack went, I'm guessing same thing happened to the crossbow. Do they do anything? Are they just "token" with fixed amount of VP attached (for bookeeping maybe)?

It's marquise with a z sound as the end seeing as it's a lady cat, marquis is pronounced how you were saying it
" I was leaning towards a saw mill so what do I know" No that would normally be correct in this style of game, Think they just went for recruiter for tutorial purposes since they knew it would be a shorter campaign. In a real match that's definitely the correct starting play.
I always hate admitting Direwolf does good work considering how terribly they treat their employees, with unending unpaid overtime and harrassment issues.
