    Sony FX30 + ProRes RAW ... Worth It?
    Meh ... probably not for most people in most scenarios, but still pretty cool. Hey Atomos, Blackmagic, Apple, and RED; can't we work together for the common good?

    I did a fairly extensive testing of shooting ProRes Raw with my FX30 recording to a Ninja V and pretty much agree with all of your points. I also edit and grade in DaVinci Resolve Studio 18 and those extra steps to get media to work in it are a pain. Since there is no chance that I will go back to editing with Adobe Premiere or Final Cut the cons you mention are real barriers. I do find your remarks about the Ninja V interesting. Mine gets warm but never hot, and the fan is barely audible. Shooting in S Log3 Cine EI has given me more control than I deserve.

      @@PhillipRPeck I do double system sound recording with a Sound Devices MixPre 3 II with timecode sync. The mics are not mounted on the camera, either on a boom pole or wireless so a little amount of fan noise is not an issue. In any case "Dialogue Isolate" in DaVinci Resolve Studio 18 or Isotope RX10 will take care of it.

    This is a great, very useful video, and applause to you for making this! Funky cats too! I have a Blackmagic 6K Pro and an FX30, and a Ninja V. Raw is superb on the 6K Pro, with full integration into Resolve and the Blackmagic film LUTs. I agree however with your comments about the Ninja V running hot. It does this with any camera and the fan is definitely audible. The crop factor for Prores RAW on the FX30 with the Ninja V, lack of NLE compatibility and the lack of in-camera processing are deal breakers for using ProRes RAW on the FX30 for me. The XAVC Intra codec on the FX30, with the SLog3 and Cinetone produces very high quality footage when recording internally, with the benefit of in-camera processing on the FX30. An added plus, finally, is that Sony's Catalyst software can use the gyro data in the Sony-recorded files to stabilise the files without the dreaded warping you can get in NLEs. This isn't available for ProRes RAW footage. So Raw for me on the 6K Pro but definitely not on the FX30! Applause again to you!

    Great video, thanks for this. I'd just like to add to the conversation -- a lot of filmmakers prefer a 1:1 pixel readout on a sensor. Subjectively, it gives a more organic feel to your image because it there is no down sampling going on (which why some people prefer the look of the FX3 rather than FX30). Add on top of that; cinema glass and a 12-16bit color, you tend to have a more "cinema" look.
    I have an FX30 and do shoot RAW over HDMI, but I also use a PL > Sony E metabones speed booster with Tokina cinema glass attached to it. I enjoy the look I get out of this camera very much.

      Thanks! Excellent points. I quite like the image as well and I cut out a longer section where I talked about the sort of small format cinematic look of the footage that I really liked. And just a note on the Ninja, it is clunky, but not having to squint looking at the tiny fx30 screen, and the fact that I can slide a 4tb SSD in there and have 11hrs of record time for relatively cheap makes it totally worth the practicality cost

    • @PhillipRPeck

    All good points - the real question is where will this ‘bitage’ going to end up being displayed - anything larger than an iPad for a One-Shot event like a wedding (or in my case shooting a play) I go for ProRes over HDMI which is still cheaper than RED/ARRI cameras…
    YES! Before even thinking about ProRes you should have a NAS RAID storage device of at the very least 3TB and a DAS backup for the NAS

  • @snaprifice

    I think raw is more of a future proofing aquisition format. If you're doing SDR web content it hardly seems worth it. However, as HDR starts to become more common I could see more advantages there, since more color information and dynamic range is retained, bumping up the data in acquisition could be quite useful.

    • @PhillipRPeck
      @PhillipRPeck  Рік тому +1

      That's a good point although, technically, 10-bit 422 is enough for HDR content. But I agree, Raw would give you a lot more information to play with

    BRAW or bust! Big fan of Blackmagic's efficiency and speed; S-Log3 integrates reasonably alright with Blackmagic Film log, so I just mix the cameras on shoots but default to my BMPCC's when the dynamic range of an environment calls for it -- better than the expense and bulk of an external recorder, and no crop.

    • @PhillipRPeck
      @PhillipRPeck  Рік тому

      I didn't touch on BRAW in the video for the sake of time but it would be nice if that were an option on Sony. ProRes RAW is great and all, but being limited to FCP and Premiere makes it so much less desirable.

I can't believe why Sony don't put out a 6K RAW. That and that is won't put out BRAW makes me not thinking of using the FX30 for RAW. Yes, I'm using Davinci Resolve.
    I have now preordered the S5mkII-X, we will see if it replaces them both.

      That said, Panasonic has a ways to go before its autofocus is as good as Sony so I understand wanting to have a Sony for that reason.

    Nothing new in this video, but I liked your opinion at the end. For me, the FX30 + Ninja can be compared to Blackmagic.
    The FX30 + Ninja basically becomes a very expensive and cumbersome Pocket 4k.
    But the FX30 alone is a Pocket 6k with autofocus, built-in oversampling, smaller file sizes and better lens options. I’d get the Ninja for monitoring, but only because I want the Atom Cast combo. Otherwise I’d use a regular monitor for false color / waveforms.

    Yes With the Sonly Fx 30 shooting Prores RAW, is not really ideal, if you have your heart set on shooting RAW for video i would say go with the Blackmagic 6kpro camera that shoots true RAW with no setbacks, at all, you just gain the all the good reasons to shoot RAW..
    With the Sony Fx30 just shoot with the Ninja V+ in prores HQ you will get a much better quality image..
    The only real benefits to shooting RAW weather it's video or Still pictures, is that it's more forgiving for exposure and white balance, meaning if your white balance is off a bit or your exposure is off you can change the ISO and settings you would on your camera in post without the video image falling apart because all the information is there..
    So my advise is just don' screw up when shooting with the Sony Fx30 and make sure your white balance and exposure is good and you won't need to shoot Raw..
    And you will get a much better image, what good is it to shoot RAW with the sony fx30 to fix white balance or exposure when the rest of the quality of the image is degraded, makes no sense...
    I never bother with Prores Raw with the Sony Fx30 because it's just not good, you get a huge crop , no 6k to 4k down sample and your image is less sharp and your video files are 3 times the size and it takes up more space and makes your Atomos Ninja work harder, this is totally useless in my opinion they should have left that feature out and gave you something else that you can use such as built in ND filter or shutter angle or even used CFexpress type B rather then the old shitty outdated CFexpress type A system...
    CFexpress type A sucks, it's old technology, it's more expensive for the media cards, and the larges CFexpress type A card you can get is 160 GB which is useless, and it cost $500.00 where you can get a 500 GB CFexpress type B card for $500.00 or a 1.2 TB CFexpress type B card for around $800.00 and CFexpress type B is much faster and more reliable..
    Why Sony Insist on using the old CFexpress type A is beyond me, oh wait i know because Sony Owns CFexpress type A technology and so when some company who manufactures a CFexpress type A card Sony Gets paid < yeah that's it...
    So in truth, Sony would rather get the money and in turn cripple it's customers, they don't care.. LOL
    That is one of the things Sony needs to do is knock that crap off and get rid of that CFexpress type A crap out of their camera's it's out dated no one wants it it's useless..
    What they need to do is start building camera's that can use SSD Drive Technology like Panasonic does, that is more affordable media to record video to you can by a 2 TB M.2 SSD drive
    For around $250.00 rather the 1.2 TB CFexpress type B for Over $800.00 all camera media cards are over priced which is why i shoot with the atomos Ninja V+ so i can record all my Video to An SS D Drive, the same media companies who make the SD cards Make the SSD drives and charge less then half the price in storage size , a V90 SD card with 1.2 TB cost close to $800.00 to $1,000.00 where a 2TB SSD drive only runs you $250.00 and they are more reliable they have top of the line error correcting because it's a Computer Drive where you install windows and it needs to write page files and do tons of error corrections so your windows operating system doesn't get corrupt,
    Your windows system files don't get messed, why? because Hard drives and SSD drives has tons of error corrections, if you use a SD card as a hard drive you would be re-installing windows every month LOL..
    Lose the SD cards use SSD drives that is the way to go..

      I don't think there is a color space--it's a linear RAW file--so it needs to have a color space and gamma applied to it. You can try color correcting and grading it as it is (using whatever gamma and color space your project is already in and exporting to), but it doesn't look great.
      I just converted it to S-Log 3, S-gamut3.cine

    should have checked the regular ProRes recording when setting the camera to all intra in the highest bit rate , which is the way to go I believe in terms of quality , space and price relative to cf express type A cards recording , then you you would still get the camera downsampling 6k to 4k.
    but Its only based on information I gathered and still needs confirmation.

    • @PhillipRPeck
      @PhillipRPeck  11 місяців тому

      Yeah, I totally spaced on recording other ProRes options. I do believe that you will get the 6K down sample, so no crop. I also suspect ProRes would be a less processed signal from the camera versus the internal XAVC S-I, so less noise reduction for instance. But, I obviously can't confirm that. However, if it were me, the added price, bulk and rigging hassle of using an external recorder isn't justified just to do ProRes HQ versus XAVC S-I (or even XAVC HS which is what I typically use)

      It depends on what you are shooting for events sports and animals I think it’s the way to go and way more affordable then buying bunch of cf express cards or having to Cary a computer
      I believe you will get the same processing and internal noise reduction too , as you won’t output raw from the hdmi but the all intra.

The FX30 may require less rigging, but you will not have any wide angle lenses that are sufficiently wide for the crop factor (2.4x). Whereas on the dedicated mft mount there are wide angle options.
