Another success story here as well. I went so long without cruise control it would make you sick. I paid 17.49$ for the part and about 15 minutes to switch out the part. The spring clip wants to slide up and off, for anyone who is unclear on how it is supposed to go. I found using a flat bladed screwdriver to slightly pry the small inner retaining tab up over the mounting post and pushing the clip up with my thumb made quick work of this part of the job. Getting it back on was as simple as sliding the clip down and on. No tools. Thank you again dude✌️
Hey Shaun, I just wanted to say thank you very much - I am the worst mechanic ever and your video gave me enough familiarity and confidence to get this handled myself. It makes me feel much better that I got it done without having to pay somebody else. Thanks for taking the time to document.
Timothy Street that's awesome and I know how you feel! It makes me a lot more confident watching a video before tackling an unfamiliar fix or mod. I never expected this to be such a common issue but I'm glad I could help you and so many others!
Hey buddy, thanks for the video. I have been having this issue on my 2008 GMC Sierra for a couple years now. It keep getting worse and finally quit working altogether. I went to AutoZone earlier this evening, got the switch, put it in and the cruise control works great now. It cost $16.99 + tax and took about 10 minutes to install. I owe you a beer! Thanks again!
@@SheepdogShaun drove it into work this morning and the ABS/Stabilitrak lights came on. Has to be connected to the switch change. You ever see this? Some googling shows some relationship between the two, but I'm wondering if my new part is bad?
Wow nice dude, I have been dreading going to the shop, I went last year and asked about it. The woman at the dealership told me that it would be $100 bucks for the diagnostic. I asked if that money would be included or applied towards the total repair cost., she replied NO. So I went on a 2 week RV trip without cruise. I figured that I would get it fixed after our vacation. Here it is 8 months later and now I can repair it myself. Wow why couldn't she simply quote me an estimate. Dealership, its a shame that we need them.
I watched the video again and at the end you said "I can't believe it was that and it took me so long to replace it". That's exactly what I said when I took it out for a test drive! I figured it would be something that I would have to take to the dealer and pay a couple hundred dollars to fix. I can't thank you enough. I do a lot of long distance driving and really need the cruise control.
Saw your video, ordered the part, had a pretty hard time with the clip (seems like u push it down a little bit, then force it around the round part). But man! 10 minutes or so Jacking with it, and boom! I've got my cruise control back! Thanks a lot man! What a big help AND not to mention saving me hundreds! Thanks again!
Yeah I tried to show how that clip works, it's definitely a weird one! Glad it helped though. Seems like this is a common issue and they're trying to charge way too much to fix it.
Thanks for posting the video. I bought an '08 Silverado last weekend and the cruise control wasn't working. I was able to negotiate the price down quite a bit because of it, I'm glad a $10 switch was able to fix it!
Hey Shaun. I've read in other posts that replacing the brake light switch fixes a Stabilitrak issue where the display tells you to Service the Stabilitrak. I replaced the brake light switch (hard to do for a big guy like me) and unfortunately it did not fix my Stabilitrak issue. But guess what, my friggin cruise control works again!!!! I'll be damned! Thank you brother.
Dude! Excellent vid. It was exactly what I needed. Your showing the clip and removal was perfect! My problem started having to play with brake pedal to get the cruise to work on cold days it was especially bad until it warmed up. Then I added a trailer brake setup my brakes would always stay engaged. When trying to back up and just a pain in the butt. But the new switch alleviated all problems . Thank you sir. After looking at switch I could have probably just have cleaned the sticky factory old grease off but new switch $20 and 10 min install.
Mad props for doing this one handed and filming it all! I just wish you had shown a little more detail on the spring clip removal. Afraid I'm gonna break mine.
One hand install... clutch. About to do mine now. Thanks for the help. Brake lights been staying on and cruise control stopped working as well. I pull trailers too and the trailer brakes would stay on until I would tap the brake pedal a few times lol
Thanks for the video! Got the part for under $13 on Amazon and having seen your video it took me only 10 minutes. Problem solved and cruise work all the time now!
Thanks for the video. Took less time to find the tools and fix it than it did to watch your video. Probably would have taken an hour to figure it out on my own.
Thanks for the video, this helped with the replacement. The new switch fixed my problem. Who knew the 17 dollar part that I have been putting off fixed it! Just asking Autozone for the brake switch for an 07 Silverado 1/2 ton 4x4 was easy!
My 2011 Silverado has the same problem. We have a 2010 that had a working cruise control. I swapped the part in the video between the 2011 and 2010. trucks to see if that was the problem before buying the part. Now they BOTH work. Maybe the part just needed to be unplugged and plugged in again, or something was out of alignment. Great video btw on how to remove it.
you might want to open the switch and pull out the white trigger and reposition the spring inside mine keep pushing forward and the trigger would get stuck so I took a small flat head screw driver and pushed the spring back all the way until it couldn't go nomore because the spring looked like it was bend outwards you need to make sure that spring is sitting straight up and down it fixed my problem also I got some dielectric grease and put some in the switch because that grease they used looked all dried up and didn't look like it lubed anything that how I fixed mine
damn. I have literally been searching everywhere for a how to video. my 2011 sierra is doing the same shit plus my brake lights are on all the time while the trucks on. I bought the switch earlier today. gonna try and swap it out tomorrow.
Something to try as a temporary fix to this problem: I experienced exactly the same cruise control problem on my 2010 Silverado. I then discovered that by using my foot to pull up the brake pedal, the cruise light came on and worked fine until I again stepped on the brake....then the problem reappeared. It appeared that there might be something preventing a full release on the brake cruise switch. In other words, since my truck is 10 years old, maybe some resistance had built up on the shaft running into the switch. I then sprayed WD-40 all along the shaft. Eureka! The problem disappeared. It worked fine for approximately 1 month and then the problem reappeared. Another WD-40 spraying has had it working for the last month.
Great video thanks! However it looked like you didnt put that arm back back on that you slide off the bolt and it was pushed to the back. Anywho, thanks again!
When putting it back in I kind of sort of didn't see it had a gap when fully installed and torqued the hell out of it and snapped the head. Just hope the new part doesn't wear out or mess up
I replaced mine everything worked except putting it back together the bolt no longer wanted to go in it's home.... sooo is it safe without the bolt just the clip on it or ?

You can get a bluetooth obd2 reader on amazon for like $30 and use an app like "torque" to read any codes that may be there. That would definitely be a good start. Although I didn't make a video, recently my truck acted weird after filling gas. I found a trouble code with my reader and picked up a $40 part and replaced my Evap Purge Selenoid. Took me all of 5 minutes to change. Good Luck!
+Shaun Singer thanks man, ! I just left it for service (sparks, oil, filters etc) and explained this to my mechanic so I will update if he finds something (sorry for bad english) I'm from Mexico City)

I am having similar problems however I originally noticed cruise control wasn't working after someone on the road told me I had no break lights. When I got home break lights are fine. It turns out when car is running I have no break lights. When car is off but ignition is on I do have break lights. Any ideas?
My cruise control looked like it would go on but it wouldn't let me set a speed. I'm not sure about the brake lights. I didn't hear anything about them though. The part is cheap and easy enough to change if you think it may be the issue.

Thanks for posting - mine is having same issue. I'll start here. What is that device that you were checking codes with? I'd love to put one in my truck.
Its an Edge programmer. If you dont want to spend that much, they make bluetooth obd2 scanners(for like $35) that connect to your phone and you can read and delete codes....you just cant mess with timing and fuel to make it faster like you can with a programmer.
When I made this, I had no idea how many people were having the same issue. It makes me so happy to save everyone else literally hundreds of dollars as well. Thanks for watching and commenting!
WD40. I had this problem and noticed if I stuck my foot under the brake pedal and pulled back the Cruise started working again. Sprayed the Brake switch with WD40 and it works again.
if replacing the switch doesn't work, give the rod that goes into the firewall a few turns to the left. do it a half turn at a time. I had the same issue and that's what did it for me.
Another success story here as well. I went so long without cruise control it would make you sick. I paid 17.49$ for the part and about 15 minutes to switch out the part. what is the part number for autozone
jacob martinez I just picked one up. The part number on the box is SW8266. Made by duralast
What was the issue before you replace the brake switch , my third brake light works but not the bottom ones same thing on my turn signal
I change out my switch but then o cant shift out of park
Thanks man. My advise if you are an old man like me is get a kitchen chair to lay on outside the truck. It makes working on this much easier.
Taking off the retainer clip was the hardest part. Extremely helpful video, cruise control works perfectly now on my 2010 1500. Thanks!

By replacing this does it also fix the stabilitrack? I have a 2007 Chevy Tahoe LS 4.8L V8 and my stabilitrack goes off sometimes.
I didn't have stabilitrack but if it disengages when you tap the brakes, it may be the source of your issue.
I changed the brake switch but my cruise control light won't work. What could it be? The brakes light works except the cruise control
Did you check all the fuses?
WD40. I had this problem and noticed if I stuck my foot under the brake pedal and pulled back the Cruise started working again. Sprayed the Brake switch with WD40 and it works again.

Did it and didn't fix the problem what now? It also feels loose even screwed tight. So frustrated
if replacing the switch doesn't work, give the rod that goes into the firewall a few turns to the left. do it a half turn at a time. I had the same issue and that's what did it for me.
thanks. clip was giving me hell
Did you notice more power?
I did not feel any difference but it could if your truck is in limp mode because of the check engine light
Shaun Singer that makes sense. Thanks for sharing, I’ll get back to you on that when I fix mine
