One of the moments I will always remember is watching a guy at a major arcade here in Ireland get into the Sega R-360 Afterburner arcade machine while utterly hammered drunk (security was busy elsewhere) and after a few minutes he was vomiting all over himself and the machine while pulling 360 spins. Mixture of crying laughing and complete horror. Thanks Sega.
+RenovatioJuris Must've been down in Dublin was it? Think there was very few of the R-360s in Ireland!
+Lagahan Yep it was Dr Quirkys on O'Connell street. They used to keep it in the window just inside the main door on the left so everyone could see it. It was one hell of an impressive unit and I'd say it cost a fortune. Sadly for that guy it made his reunion with his last meal (probably from Supermacs) that much more of a public spectacle. Try apologizing to the girlfriend for that one the next day. Not an easy win. He must have had an end-of-level boss moment coming face to face with her after :)
+RenovatioJuris ha ha this combines two of my loves. Sega and my home country. Great story!!
+RenovatioJuris hahhahhaha lol
+RenovatioJuris A drunk Irishman? No, who would have thought.... impossible!
Such a good port of the game. It's a shame that we never saw OutRun on the 32X along with this and Space Harrier. The trinity was almost complete, haha.
that would have been epic beyond Space Jam!
Space harrier is on 32x but not outrun
STAXONDECK1 Yeah... that was the point.
+Gameplay and Talk oh, agreed
Its all on the Saturn (and better than on the 32x)
32x! I remember staring at one of those through a shop window when I was a kid and knowing I could never afford one. Just standing there with a sad face.
Did you ever buy one? I just bought a 32X at my local retro game store for $140.00. Works Great.
_Still_ one of the single best soundtracks of any game. and it's only like 5 songs.
This and Shadow Squadron ruled the living-room for roughly a year when I was kid.
This looks amazing on the 32X and that sound!!! Thanks Frank!
Love these old super scaler games.
I have the Genesis version of this game. I also remember the sit down cabinet with moving parts.
Nintendo claimed you would play with power, but ironically, it was Sega that used 3 AC Adaptors at the same time.
Shit, mark just killed the avgn with the c button.
DON'T YOU EVER ASK STUPID QUESTIONS HERE ON CLASSIC GAME ROOM
What's A Game.Com?
+Videogameapprentice Something to beat Derek with
+El Critico Molesto I think Mark's favorite console of all time is the Hyperscan :v
+J.J. L. Well maybe on opposite day.
+J.J. L. Or the Tiger R-Zone!
Mark I wonder if you've tried the 3DS version? Sega is doing an incredible job of porting and improving many of the old system 16 sprite super scaling games over with stereoscopic linticular 3D and the added depth is jaw dropping. Beyond that they're arcade perfect with added benefits, and the best part is they're $6.
well hello there Rich
Yep. Arcade perfect with extra features. (AfterBurner even has an extra that basically turns it into AfterBurner Climax which is no longer available which is a nice "forgive us" feature.)
SEGA should definitely keep M2 as they're excellent at what they do.
+Richard Allen Sega's 3-D rereleases of their older games on the 3DS are incredible. The 3DS version of Fantasy Zone is how I first played that game, and I fell in love since. Judging from what I've seen of at least footage of other versions (since the other releases, especially the arcade machine, seem really hard to come by), it seems like as impeccable of a port as it gets. I really wish I wasn't so terrible at that game, though.
To be specific developer M2 are the ones doing the 3D ports of their classic games...and they are FANTASTIC. M2 also did Contra Rebirth, Castlevania Rebirth, and Gradius Rebirth on Wii which were also great. They've come a long way since starting out as a mobile developer.
One of my childhood favorites. Still own my boxed copy! Now... to repair my 32x.. *whoosh!
It's sad that there aren't any arcades anymore. There was always a cabinet that just blew everybody away and Afterburner was one of the coolest ones ever. It was like flying a real airplane. So much damn fun.
this video brought back a lot of memories. This game was my first purchase for the 32x
This game proves how AWESOME the 32X was! Too bad Sega did not know what to do with it. In a perfect world it could have existed side by side with the Saturn. The Saturn for 3D and the unique games the Saturn was known for and the 32X could have been the home for perfect 32bit arcade ports like this, Space Harrier which was also out for it but also arcade perfect ports of Super Monaco GP, Rad Mobile, Out Runners and more. It is just too sad because it was a very capable system especially at scaling sprites.
+Ali Robins
unfortunately this port didn't turned out to be arcade perfect as the saturn did. also later super scaler games would have been even further scaled down like power drift, galaxy force II etc. which even couldn't shine in their fully glory on the saturn due to limitations.
tatsujincorp I think that was due to the limited RAM in the Saturn and the early CD tech. The 32X did not have those limitations. If developers actually had more time to develop for the 32X I think those arcade ports would have been possible. I think all the games on the 32X are first gen because the system did not last long and there are some pretty impressive games for a first effort.
Your right. The Saturn did have more RAM coming in at 16 Mbit (plus the Memory Expansion Cart as you mentioned) over the 32x's 4 but in the 32X developers had an opportunity to combine the RAM of the 32X with that of the Sega Genesis & that of the Sega CD. I don't think any developer did. I was a proud owner of a Sega Saturn when it first came out. What I was thinking was because the 32X was a cart based system it had access to gaming information faster than a disc based system with its inherit load times.
Those numbers sound better than the numbers I saw online. Well done! I do have to say good developers can make up the difference in weak hardware like the Sega CD. Sewer Shark, Tomcat Alley and even Sonic CD to name a few do a great job of hiding the load times.
Damn kids...shouldn't be in this channel anyways...what are they going to ask next? Whats a vectrex?
Or What's a Paladin...
+Sac077 or what`s a atari jaguar
So, let's say I get a Sega 32X. Can I play Truxton on it?
Yes. Yes you can.
That 32X plugged into that Famicom made me laugh way more than it should've X'D
32x for president
+MrDreamcastx
It would beat what we have now!
anyone else see "REVO EMAG" with the way the letters show up in the game over screen?.......alright I admit I had to slow it and pause to catch it but I thought it said emo for a sec lol

I guess Mark is getting sick and tired of the questions being asked over and over again. LOL
I miss being able to watch this show, I don't live in America so I can't see it on Amazon Prime.
I own both genesis versions of the game Afterburner, it is hard to go back to playing the original release due to the always on cannon and the odd popup that the genesis used to fake scaling
Facts: After Burner 1 was never on the Genesis and the 32X. This is basically the Genesis version of After Burner 2 ported on to the 32X.
This is one of my favorites games ever, i spent a lot of money on the original arcade machine and actually i have this game for SEGA Saturn.
REVIEW EVERYTHING
32x killed the Sega CD, and while releasing both Sega released killed the Saturn.
Poor strategic planning from Sega.
He who controls the spice, controls the universe.
I wonder how a Famicom 32X would play.
32X what an underrated gem !
the 3ds is the best version. but this one is ok
If 32x and saturn had almost the same chips why are 32x games 30fps but saturn 60 fps?
Enemy of the State/ VCD King because saturn has better clocked chips and two additional GPU processors (which did most of the heavy lifting in Saturn games)
The 32X basically had no hardware graphics acceleration. Effects like scaling and rotation or even the basic stuff like scrolling and background layering, all had to be painstakingly done in software using up CPU cycles. In comparison, the Saturn had two VDPs (primitive GPUs) that had every 2D effect you can imagine "built-in" and easily utilized by the devs. It was a 2D graphics beast. Too bad that the 3D features were not nearly as comprehensive or easily implemented though.
Lousy game....we dont even know what is happening...
This game brings back so much arcade memories for me. This port is pretty much arcade perfect. Thanks for sharing!
Maybe the wife should be asking why her husband is flying an enemy jet in a 32x game instead of why he spontaneously combusted.
Since the 32x has twice the bits of the sega genesis, you need 2 av cables and power adaptors to make it work, haha lol.
Eventrough IN THEORY the 32x Maybe interfacible with the famicom because the famicom has external av and sound input pins and it has the same machine languange code as the famicom, so you never know, if we mod & reprogram the 32x along it's games it may be work with it ,then if only will will bridge that 32X to make it fit on the famicom.
Does this video also have that lovely buzz that you hear when a CRT TV is on? Amazing.
Genesis Does! nintendont!
It's a good port but the closer explosions etc. are clearly more pixelated than on the arcade/saturn version. And yeah, also the 30 fps vs. 60 fps issue.
Game looks amazing!
Love your reviews :)
Now I know what happened to my brother 20 years ago, thanks Mark
Rutubo Games did such great jobs with ports. After Burner 32X, Space Harrier 32X, X-Men Children of the Atom (Saturn version), etc. All insanely great ports.
I've always wanted the 32x, but when I was a kid my parents wouldn't get it for me. I still want one. Hopefully I get one someday. Space Harrier and Knuckles Chaotix are the two that I want the most for it.
OMG, my roommate combusted!!!!!!
Never thought he would have said something bad about the 32X, instant Karma!
I had a go in the After Burner arcade machine with the seat/canopy thing that rotates and goes upside down. It was actually pretty rough, it surprised me. Great fun though... And my change fell out my pocket, I remember.
The 32x version runs at 30fps. The Saturn version is 60fps, same as the 1987 arcade version which was also 60fps.
There's a high-pitched ringing noise coming from the After Burner audio =/
I prefer the Megadrive version. The 32X & arcade versions are too busy, whereas the tweaks made to the Megadrive's version give for far better gameplay.
Ouch, that high pitched noise is killing my ears
Anybody else ever get up in the morning, say fuck it, and then get really baked and go play Afterburner and Space Harrier at the arcade all day when you were in college, or was it just me?
I owned this game, along with the 32X, and it was fun. But I lost them, and almost my entire vintage game collection, from a fire.
IMO After Burner for Sega Saturn is the best version released. Even better than the arcade.
It runs very smoothly.
I think the 32x failed because of its impractical setup and lackluster game library.
Instead of inserting the game into the wrong console, you inserted the game into the right peripheral but the peripheral in the wrong console! Wow its amazing how cgr manages to stay fresh
0:12 Oh, now that's just cruel. =(
"More power supplies makes it better."
- Lord Karnage, 2015
this video has a super high pitched noise.....
Didn't have the 6 button Sega stick for genesis?
Hey, my roommate just burst into flames, all that's left is a Nintendo t-shirt...
Mark is full Sega fanboy here!
Did Yu Suzuki play his games? I don't think so...
I'm sorry but the 32X version doesn't look anywhere near as good as the Saturn version. The frame rate sucks for a start. By the way, I think there is a reason Frank sent you the 32X! I nearly bought one but so glad I opted for the Saturn instead. Good vid though.
32X needed more ports like this. Imagine OutRun?
My mother spontaneously combusted.
Thanks! :D
Mark because you said so i'm getting a 32x because everybody should have 32X!
Probably one of the few decent titles on the 32x
What an impressive port the only thing it lacks is joystick support.
jk but I like your videos a lot there very cool and i'm a collector myself
ew the 32x looks so weird on a model 1 genesis
The music will never be bettered by any other arcade machine.
hay Mark you inspired me to star my show on my channel thanks
I got this on SEGA Nomad which is the same as Megadrive/Genesis, and it is awesome and believe it or not doesn't look much different than this version here, the biggest difference I would say is the sound and the color usage seems a little better. Other wise its a fast, responsive, but above all else a fun but very challenging game!
The MD port is not anywhere near this level. The scaling effects are very sparse and choppy looking but at least it does run smoothly. It could've been much better, but Sega half-assed it by outsourcing the porting job to another company. The PC-Engine port that was coded by NEC Avenue (the first party PC-Engine developer) is actually much better than the MD version in the graphics department but does run choppier. The 32X port here is pretty much the arcade version running at half the frame rate.
I just noticed that Mark ends all his reviews with a Game Over
This was the only game I had for my 32X!
There should be an R-360 addon for the 32x
fuck yeah after burner y'all!
I'm getting sick just watching, haha.
The 32x is bad because it fucked the saturn
Wow gotta get this one it looks dope! I love your taste man especially is flying shooters!
Ahhh... fond memories of this game. There needs to be a resurgence in the "blowing things up with airplanes!" genre.
i have no 2 on 3DS. ITS AWESOME
After Burner for the 32X was finally the perfect arcade port of this classic game that I had been waiting for since the '80s. It's just a shame that Outrun was never ported for the 32X. Super Monaco GP and Power Drift would've been ideal for the 32X as well. It's kind of heart-breaking that the 32X only got about 30-40 games in its entire lifetime.
32x version of After Burner is not arcade perfect. It runs at 30fps. The 1987 arcade version was 60fps. The Saturn version was 60fps.
@@greatamericanf15estrikeeag41 That's technically correct, but in practice the difference isn't noticeable imo, unless if you watch the versions running side by side. I didn't notice the difference back in 1994 and only read about it afterwards. In that pre-DF era I don't think reviewers noticed a difference either. What was immediately noticeable to everyone however, was that the 32X version had all of the arcade game's visual detail, unlike the previous home versions such as the Genesis version.. All the home versions obviously also lacked the arcade version's force feedback joystick, so i guess none of them were really 100% arcade perfect.
We call genesis a Sega mega drive in the UK
777th like? I'm lucky!
I need this for my 32x
The phrase 32X was used FIFTEEN times in this "Review"
love the classic intro for CGR
1:24 to 1:34 is basically a CGR initiation.
Awesome! :)
I have after burner on master system
Man do I love me some Sega AM2!
To me, Afterburner 32x was a "So, what?" game. As in: "Wow your super-expensive 32-bit peripheral ALMOST perfectly replicates a game that came out seven years prior." *sarcastic clap* That's not to say this wasn't a great port, it was. But as a system showpiece it was weak sauce.
Most arcade games back in the 80s were at least 5 Years ahead of home systems technically though. Arcade hardware was way way more expensive and nobody was going to pay that for home consoles. Later on in the 2000s the gap between consoles and arcade hardware became much smaller. But yeah of course the 32x was a little underpowered at the time since it shared resources with the Genesis.
@@overnightdelivery Still this was a very sad showing. Especially now that someone sat down and really opened the hardware up, showing what it can do! Have you SEEN that new Doom port someone made? Not only is the robot-fart music gone, but It's practically a 1:1 copy of the PC original!
@@SomeOrangeCat Oh I'm not disagreeing that the 32x was not used to it's full potential. It was rushed and certainly a game like Doom could have been near perfect. The 'music' was embarrassing and clearly just used the Genesis sound chip in a poor way.
Didn't this version run at half of the frame rate of the arcade and Saturn's version?
I think so 30 fps for 32x and 60 for Saturn and arcarde.
LOVE YOU SEGA!^^,)
What is that HORRIBLE screeching sound that plays whenever gameplay shows up?
I think it's the airplane sound (or at least the best an old yamaha fm chip could do)
its a jet engine sound.
@@thkarape imo this game only used the FM chip for the synths.
Drums, Guitar, and sound FX are actual samples played by the 32X.
the jet sound is realer than what a Genesis can do alone.
Arcade perfect sound, which had more expensive sound than Genesis.
F-14s are so badass!
The 32x sucks
Awesome😜
lol 3 plugs :-)
