Thanks for another great adventure. When I was young, my goal was always to "catch my limit." Catching a limit, I thought, validated my ability as a fly fisherman. But after you've caught lots of limits over the years, it seems natural to change your goal (at least I did), to going after quality fish - the really good fish - the ones that few ever catch because those fish are "smart" and have survived for multiple years. Quality over quantity - yes!
I was the same way when I was young. I would keep every fish I caught. My dad would get upset cause we had a freezer full of fish. Sometimes its fun to get into many fish regardless of size but over the years I've come to prefer quality over quantity
Thats a tank anywhere my friend. I took next week off work and planning a midweek trip for some extra solitude. I was considering going here but may end up somewhere new. Rad trip!
@@TroutHowler Yeah with my mediocre skills I'll probably get the skunk. I'll figure it out this week but most likely leaning towards somewhere I haven't been. Hey are you interested in sneaking out one of these days a trip somewhere?
I love that rock you were fishing from. I actually heard about your channel from a gentlemen that talked to me while I was fishing there. Fun to see you crush those big fish.
Amazing trip... liked the camping outtakes. Almost 20 years on since I was doing grad school in Utah, met you through Corwin and did those trips with you. Watching these videos seriously has me wanting to catch a flight out there and follow you into the back country again... You're treading on Fred Bear territory w/ fly fishing 😁
It's crazy to think its been 20 years. We got old haha. That reminds me I need to call Corwin. I haven't talked to him in a long time----i'm a bad friend haha
Good to see monsters like that in the Uintas. Did you ever check the stomach contents of any fish in there. In some lakes people don't realize they can feed on fresh water shrimp, salamanders and the like.
Great video. I'm planning a uintas trip and was looking for you video you did about researching where to find big fish. Did you take that down? For the life of me, I can't find it.
I’m curious your typical miles limit for an overnighter trip? What’s your longest hike/elevation gain on a one-nigh trip? You def grind out some tough miles on a regular basis!
Seven miles one way is typically my max for an overnighter with most being less than that. The most I've ever done for a single night trip was about 12 miles but that was long ago
Well, I know that particular lake kicks out bigger fish because I've been to it many times. The biggest tip for a chance at finding bigger fish is looking at the stocking reports. I look for lakes that have 4 to 6 year old fish. I have another video that talks about researching lakes that produce trophy fish. ua-cam.com/video/GWWoAaaC2bY/v-deo.html
That is a tough lake unless you hit it just right. How many hours did you fish? After I watch you pulling in hundreds of trout, I don't feel so bad when I fished the same spot and caught one lunker and a 15 incher in five hours. I just don't have the patience to keep fishing hour after hour without even getting a bite.
I probably fished for any hour the first day and 7 to 8 hrs the second. Definitely not fast fishing but I typically prefer quality over quantity. I caught couple good ones so I was content
I've never understood why, when immediately after hooking the fish, fly fisherman pile up a crapload of line before catching up with the reel. Just start reeling 😑 doesn't it spool onto your reel all @#$ed up? Anyway nice fish I suppose
Haha, yeah I can understand that if you don't fly fish. You retrieve line typically just by stripping it in. It just piles up at your feet. You leave the pile so you can re cast. When reeling a fly reel it's a 1 to 1 ratio. It's not like spin reel that you flip the bail launch the line. Like Calvin said you have to keep tension on the fish so that's why you pull in the line vs reeling it in typically. You reel it in when you get a chance. You do occasionally get your fly line in a big mess but it is what it is
Very nice fishing trip and great footage from a great country, fishing is great too, thumbs up from faraway land of Nw Zealand,, Tony.
Yeah, it's one of my favorite lakes. I have been there many many times
Gorgeous scenery.... absolute hogs for Unitas... fun video. Thx
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it. It was a fun trip
Those were beasts. They made you work but you still found'em. The last one was stupid-thick.
The last cast paid off 👍
Nice brookies! Good luck in the winds! Can't wait for the vid
Thanks man. The Winds trip was pretty epic
Fantastic adventure Kendall - catching that size Brookie in the Unitas is almost unheard of. Thanks for sharing, and go grab yah a new sleeping bag.
There's some nice fish in there. And your are right----im due for a new bag haha

Great trip! That last Brookie was a monster! Good luck in the Winds!
Thanks man. Did the Winds trip a couple weeks ago. It was pretty epic.
Thank you for sharing your adventure!!!
Thanks Benjamin. Have you been out?
This lake has been on my bucket list for a while now. Will have to hit it before it gets cold.
Its a good one for sure

If you go midweek you'll likely be alone there. Good luck if you go--don't expect it to be fast fishing however haha

I've been fishing off that rock for many years haha
Nice Job! Looks like another great day in the Uintas.
Lots of good memories there

As always, Nice job!
Thanks Tim. There weren't many fish, but they were chunks.
I’m heading up this weekend backpacking in the uinta’s hoping to get some good fish I’ll for sure bring some damsels now thanks for the info :)
Nice! I hope you get into them
@@TroutHowler thanks man hope so too and thanks again for all the awesome videos really motivates me to go out a fish :)
@@TylerOstergaard Awesome---it's a great hobby to have
Great video! I rode over 2k miles to fish there last year, definitely worth the trip.
2k? WOW. Where are you from?
@@TroutHowler WV
@@WVCUR77 That is a long drive haha. Hopefully you had good time on your trip
@@TroutHowler yeah it was amazing. I'm heading back in a few weeks in an attempt to catch a grayling.
Very nice they grew since we were there last. Pig of a brookie!
We need to go again sometime.
Wow! Big fish! 😀
Yes! I finally caught a big fish. I've been trying for years
Water Lily Lake above Grant Springs not too far from Mountain home. The state record brown is in there. If you can’t find it PM me
Water Lily is a good one for sure. I haven't been there in a bit.

I usually do pump a fish too see what they are eating but I did not on thus particular trip. They certainly eat well there
I watched the video very carefully, I feel very good
I'm glad you liked it 👍
I actually use that same fly rod for backpacking in the Unitas also. The 10 foot works great for the small streams too
The Echo or the Scott?
@@TroutHowler the echo, it’s been a great rod for the price I paid. They also sell replacement sections for their fly rods
@@kylelewis9130 I've used it several times now and i must admit I'm impressed with it---especially for the price

@@TroutHowler Thank you! Great channel
Those Brooks are HOGS!!!
There are some healthy brook trout in that lake for sure.
New sub ! Liked ✌️🙏😊
Thanks for watching 👍
Well that was worth the trip! The damsel nymph is so good! What year generation would you say those big ones were?
5 to 6 years old. I was literally planning on going to a different lake until the day I left. I'm glad that guy reached out to me

Just one more cast...
Haha, the one more cast usually ends being around ten. But in this case it really was my last cast.
I've never understood why, when immediately after hooking the fish, fly fisherman pile up a crapload of line before catching up with the reel. Just start reeling 😑 doesn't it spool onto your reel all @#$ed up? Anyway nice fish I suppose
To keep the hook tight after setting the hook. That’s why we don’t reel it in like fishing rods
