Some people saying that she's not black, well, she is, latino/Hispanic is not a race, is an ethnicity, she is a Latina who happens to be black, and very beautiful
Bear in mind that Latino and Hispanic are not the same thing. Hispanic refers to all Spanish-speaking communities in the world (be them European, American or even Asian), whereas Latino refers specifically to those born in the Americas. Hispanics are indeed an ethnicity, but Latinos are not. Latino is a vague term for Spanish-speaking people born in the Americas, either belonging to a full or partial or no Hispanic heritage at all. Some Latinos have African heritage (Dominican Republic), some others have Italian heritage (Argentinians) and some just have a blend of many ethnicities including that of indigenous peoples.
No matter how much we want to be a race. We are not a race, we are an ethnic group. Some have African roots, others have european roots.. others are descendants of natives and others (as in my case) are descendants of Middle Easterners. I see that Zoe is identified more with their Latin American roots (there is nothing wrong with that) but it's good to see that she knows that before Latin America, her ancestors come from somewhere else. I love being Latino but I cannot deny my arabic roots.
She's Dominican-Puerto Rican. Her father was Dominican and her mother Puerto Rican. At the age of nine she moved from New Jersey to live in Dominican Republic, and return to N.J. after her sophomore year in high school in D.R. She has a Dominican half-brother who is a rapper living in Dominican Republic. She is both, but if you had to called her just one of them, then she is Dominican.
@nessy79gonzales She can definitely claim black b/c that is in her roots. She has also been quoted as speaking very highly of her latin heritage as well. I am very glad that she is proud to be caught claiming her African roots so unapologetically. She is an awesome inspiration.
Black does not deal with where you are from. The word black deals with skin tone. At the end of the day whether you are Dominican, Puerto Rican, or Cuban. They were all brought to those Islands through the slave trade from Africa. This makes all of the millions and millions of Africans and mixed people throughout Latin America and the Caribbean African. Therefore in American or white AMERICA they would be considered black.
@gshunw She's from the Dominican Republic - that's why she speaks Spanish. I don't know if you're aware, but there's a large black population in Latin American countries as well. Unless of course, you were simply stating that you're a black woman who wants to speak Spanish.
katrina Jiménez it's funny to me how the world only sees black and white as a race when you fill out paperwork a lot of times under race it will have black white or Hispanic. Only non Hispanic people say it's not a race but ask any Hispanic what they are they will answer for example Cuban, Puerto Rican, Honduran, Mexican, Dominican etc. They are not going to answer black or while lol
Will in full cuban and i consider my self black thats what my skin color is...black.i could really care less what other people say what they race are.but she did say she was a black and latina woman.what so wrong with that
Many Latin Americans can identify with being "black" because of their African heritage which is where some Spanish music today gets some of it's roots which is all due to the bringing of African slaves into Latin America. So I'm sure that she is equally proud of both her African heritage and her Hispanic heritage. But I see a lot of people as well who look African "black" that are hispanic. We say black, but it's more complex than that. And we also have to recognize the large native "Indian" (f
@nessy79gonzales Her father have African roots and I believe her mother does as well. Hispanic isn't a ethnicity; it's a culture derived from many influences.
Being Hispanic is a culture, it's not an ethnicity or race. I am White raised in the Hispanic culture. Because Of Zoe's Dominican origins her ethnicity could be Black, but she was raised in the the Hispanic culture.
In the Spanish culture, "gringo" is not necessarily a slur in all the dialects. Don't forget the different dialects/slang w/n different Spanish cultures. I'm Cuban & some of what she uses means differently to us than it does to her Dominican dialect. Btw, he didn't cringe. And I, as many of my fellow Hispanics, don't see race as an issue that WE deal with, but that America hasn't quite come to terms with yet! As Hispanics, we're all too unique and beautiful to see anything but awesome!
She speaks a great spanish with puerto rican accent, in latinamerica the variety of accents is so diverse that you can't tell, every country, every region, every city, every street, have a different accent and different modisms.
If someone is Dominican or Puerto Rican all that means is that they are from that country; Puerto Rican and Dominican are not ethnicities. There are people of European as well as African descent from both places.
She is a Hispanic actress born to Her Dominican father, and her Puerto Rican mother. She has been quoted as saying that she considers herself a black woman. I am mexican & lighter than most Hispanic people but you wont catch me calling myself white just cus my skin is very fair.
America (north and south) is a mixture of diverse races. Latin america has european, african and native ancestries. Chile, argentina, uruguay etc...are mostly of white european ancestry. Ecuador, bolivia, guatemala, honduras, etc...are mostly of native south american ancestry and cuba, Dominican republic etc...are mostly of black ancestry. So...Being hispanic is not a race but an ethnicity.
To me it doesn't matter what race you are, you can except your own ethnicity if you want, its up to you. My father is from a Panama and he's of African descent and he accepts his heritage but he doesn't let it determine who he is, he already knows who he is as an individual . That's all that really matter how you accept yourself and how you stand out from everyone else.
@nessy79gonzales Actually she stresses that she is a Black Latina- so yes she claims her heritage. On a side note, she clearly is of African descent so in America she is considered Black. Dominican & Puerto Rican are nationalities, Black is a race; she can be ALL of those things.
She's said she's latino and on google it says she is italian.Skin tone doesn't give much input on where a person is from because at the end of the day everyone was darker or brown/tan skinned until white folks missed the asians, native Americans, and Hispanics trying to white everyone out back then.So everyone is mixed to be honest and me being native American and british having light brown skin can make some people think I'm from Africa or hispanic people have even spoken to me in spanish at church."No habla espanol" Is what i had to say a lot through life but yea love my spanish/native fam 💕
No not all. Because there's Spanish music styles from Spain or other regions where there are influences from other cultures such as Jewish, European, etc, even Native Indian. It's not all from African influence but African influence is a larger part due to the fact that South America (including Brazil), Caribbean, Mexico, Latin America are larger areas that was highly populated by African slaves and Native Indian peoples.
@nessy79gonzales NO SHe would never call herself black or "consider herself a black women" have u seen her interviews??! SHE IS PROUD OF WHO SHE IS AND REPRESENTS IT ALWAYS!
I'm not sure what the hubub is about- there are black British, black Frenchmen even black Germans and Italians (look up Jerome Boateng , Boney M and Mario Balotelli) or even black Spaniards (remember, Spain is next door to Africa itself). If she wants to call herself black it's not a problem, especially in the Latin world where a great deal of people are black anyway especially if you include Brazil and Portugal.
@sonicboomdan11 I'm not quite sure how you misunderstood my comment but yes I am aware that black people exist on nearly every continent on Earth and that countries like Brazil have larger black populations than the USA and yes your latter comment was the correct assumption :-)
