Actually there were just a couple mechanics to figure out and 90% of the game became much more manageable. Like literally walking into the bigger enemies when they get up from their first fall, and then punch-punch-kick-looping kick inside their counterattack envelope, which makes them completely submitted to a guaranteed kill. And the fact that you have to spend the first two stages exclusively punching to gain experience and new moves. The only really tricky part will forever remain the last corridor to the final arena and its darn tricky walls. This one needs sheer luck AND skills all the way.

Wow, that elbow technique on the final boss is genius! Never thought to do that! Looks like I have a new strat against the final boss now, always struggle against him due to his high health and the onslaught you have to face before him.
Growing up, I could sometimes kill the gunner, but never stood a chance against Jimmy. After I started to research the game to speedrun it, then I finally beat the game for the first time.
@@heidmand Nice. Lol yeah, I find the gunner to be much more difficult than Jimmy, since he does so much more damage to you with the gun. Jimmy is honestly kind of a breeze since he hardly does any damage to you, specially with that kick, kick, elbow strat. That makes him pretty easy. It's just a matter of getting to him tho with more than just a few bars of health left.
Its incredible how 21 years ago I played this game, and until now I learned that you could punch the bad guys when thrown on the ground, Just memories. 9:43
Nuk, that spinning kick is no damn good. It's a powerful move, but the delay for contact means that you can be hit before you hit them. Interestingly, Jimmy has the same problem with his spinning kick.
@@dwaynegreene152 it is mostly proper spacing and timing the kick so that he stands up into the kick as the kick hit box kinda stays out for a while. Just keeping him from attacking is the real goal because he is so aggressive.
Elbow is The second strongest attack. The strongest attack is the spinning jump kick I believe. If not then the elbow. The mount takes too much time. I can knock down one person and start on the second allowing enemies to spawn faster. I only use it on the last guy in an area if I get bad rng so I dont have to wait for them to get up. Chin's and the last 2 bosses will push you off if you attempt to mount unless they are at low health.
You can force Chins and the final bosses back up faster by acting like you are going to kneel on them while they’re down, but quickly press Up before they have a chance to throw you. Just be careful if you ever do this in the caves though, as a hit from another Chin during this transition can force a glitch which causes you to fall off the screen to your death.

@heidmand Ya, I liked the way you finished off the machine gun guy, just perfect timing and distance control. Hes the only hard part along with the pillars that comes out at the beggining of mission 4, otherwise this game isnt so hard like many ppl thought.
Sick run! I am beginning the process of learning this game. My best so far is 12:52. Where can I find Humorisk's segmented run and his "Abobo Clinch"? Any other resources would be great? I should ask about the grab technique. Does using a directional after a kick cause the grab? I see that it occurs on its own at times. What are the dynamics here? Thanks.
+DonkeyKongGenius forum.speeddemosarchive.com/post/double_dragon_times.html -This is where me and Humorisk were working and posting our updates. -About the grab: The grab happens when you uses a left/right input then the enemy is in a "stunned" state, usually caused with kicks. The randomness you are taking about is the timing of your kicks vs the stun time per first and second kick. The animation time of your kick is equal to the first kick stun animation time frame. The second stun time is much longer making it much easier to get. Your kick hurt box stays out as long as you are in the kick animation, so if you can get the enemy to walk into your kick animation while it is still lingering out, your animation ends and still have time to get the grab. -Feel free to ask about anything else, I am more than willing to help.
+David Heidman Jr Thanks for the offer for help, I appreciate it. At this point I am only looking for a pb and will only grind out WR attempts if I am good enough. So with the kick and grab, are you saying that if I kick before they are within range but then move into my kick while it is still out then this will increase my chances of grabbing them. I noticed on the last part of mission 3 you are kicking Linda when they are further away and then again for the grab. I have yet to get the timing down for this. It seems that in this case you are kicking while they are already at the edge of your kicks ready to get hit. I have noticed, like in the case of Willy that if I space out where I stand before I kick it will automatically go into the grab, which is nice.
I just bought this game for $14 bucks at Walmart. Plug and play and the joy stick is way too bulky and it doesn't work but the game is golden. I love double dragon 4 life bro.
4th heart gives both the hair pull and mount. When you hit an enemy you can get 2 different stun animations. One is short (single kick) and the other is noticeably longer (2 kicks). Walk towards the enemy durring the long stun animation and you will pull the hair. Knees to the head deal kick damage and the throw does 2 kicks worth of damage. Mount punches deal kick damage.
I saw someone use my strats and got a better time with being a bit cleaner. I believe it is possible to still improve with the same strats. The 2 deaths warps do save a bit though.
On that penultimate screen at 11:00, how come you can't just throw people off the sides? Looks like a platform to me. Also, that bitch has some GUNS! Damn!

The game is fairly easy. The wall on stage 4 is make or break for me. I cruise through the first 3 levels, sometimes the wall ruins me. Not getting the spin kick is key as well. Why does the game give you a move that literally everyone ducks under?
One way you could have sped this up a bit, farm out enough points to get the back elbow, it one-shots most foes and three-shots abobos. It doesn't even take very long to get enough points for it, otherwise solid run.
Devil Eye I found that farming points for the elbow early takes longer tgsn what I did. I chose to farm a bit on almost every enemy a small amount (I do more damage than necessary to finish off an enemy) and get the elbow right at the final gauntlet.
