It is easier to integrate in a foreign country if you go to that country as a single person either for studying or working. It is also easy to integrate in western society if you are interested in western music or if you are good in sports and other outdoor activities such as running, hiking, cycling, swimming, skiing etc. Unlike people from other countries, Indians living in North America are not united. They have South Indian associations, Gujarati associations, Punjabi associations, Bengali associations etc. Indians are closer to people who speak their own language, belong to the same religion, caste etc. True friends are people who are there for you in times of need and not those who speak and spend time with you only when everything is going well for you. Such people are extremely hard to find and so it is best to focus on your own well being and happiness.

Speaking of going to the gym; that is one of those places where you can meet people. I very often have interesting conversations with other guys in the sauna after the training, about training, healthy lifestyle, best recovery methods etc. And since this is a gym where many students go, there is also often a lot of chatting about various subjects. People are completely relaxed there. In fact; I usually do a lot more small talk there, compared to in a random cafè ,for instance. Probably a good place for girls as well. (No worries, girls, there are separate sauna rooms for men and women!) PS: I met a Somali guy there the other day, and we found out that we had a few things in common + he is a small talker like me, so we agreed to meet over a cup of coffee. Namaste from Oslo.

One thing you missed to address here. And this is particularly true for meeting new Norwergian people. You can have a great time together and have fun, but next day or next time they kind of hit a reset button and it feels like you never talked. I don't get this TBH :D

Very interesting video as I am also struggling to make my network here in Norway. But I think Shailja ji, you should tell us also , how did you manage to make friends here as I am also very introvert?

thats such lovely insight to make friends in Norway. Even I found it very easy to make friends in Norway but only when you initiate talks with them. they are very good people just like out own himachali people

There are always exceptions. I have access to an allotment garden here in Oslo, with many people from different cultures. However, it seems that they prefer "their own " people, I very often initiate small talk with fellow allotment gardeners (and I am an ethnic Norwegian) but it never develops to friendship status.. Once I stop asking questions, conversation seem to come to a stand still.. so; doesn`t it say that introverts exist in ALL cultures? also, it depends on my energy level when people meet me, I could be very social or slightly withdrawn. Usually it is a good thing to join some start of club/union where people have a shared interest. Having said that; most people are okay, but they should have at least some things in common, then friendship comes naturally.

I was just planning to do my masters in computers but after reading a lot about how Norway Govt will take Foreigners kids away from parents . the Barnevernet takes around 1,500 children away from their parents every year.
