- In today's video we visit with British Expat Andrew who calls Brasov Romania home. The city of Brasov is Romania's 7th largest city with a metro area of 382,000 people. Brasov and surrounding communities have many foreigners calling the region home due to the low cost of living and quality of life. The average US Retiree on Social Security receives $1,550 a month, and a couple on Social Security receives over $2,500 a month. A US Expat living on Social Security can expect a lower cost of living in Romania when compared to the living costs in the US.

Pretty accurate. Just keep in mind that Brasov is one of if not the most expensive city in Romania, since there are a lot of tourists in every season.

@@purplepassion8467 Pai hotaraste-te, e scump sau nu? In top sunt Brasov , Timisoara, Bucuresti si Cluj, in ultimul timp si Constanta. In orase cum sunt Craiova, Turda, Pitesti , Ploiesti etc. si chiar orase mari, cum e Iasul (care e oras universitar) - sunt ceva mai ieftine decat in Brasov. Poti da un Google. Nu mai spun daca vrei sa-ti iei casa la tara, dar la 15-20 de min de oras - diferenta e si mai mare. Iar daca ai merge prin tara, ai vedea ca sunt diferente si la alimente. Orasele turistice sunt intotdeauna mai scumpe (cum e si normal). Sigur, sunt si preturi cam la fel peste tot: benzina, asigurari , internet etc.
Brasov, Cluj, Sibiu, they all are expansive. If you want it cheaper in Transylvania go to Fagaras, Rupea, or Medias. But there you don't have that choice of restaurants, shops, schools, cultural events, etc. Concerning villages, there are also "fancy" (=expensive) ones, like Moieciu, Bran, Valea Avrigului, or Cisnadoara. Than there are pictoresque, sleepy and cheap farmers' villages with nice people and a lot of nature around and there are also dangerous ones, full of garbage, alcoholics and petty criminals. I won't name any, but usually you see within the first five minutes, which is what.

Thanks, glad you’re back. 😊 we have touched on medical before, however you’re right we should do a deep dive on it in a video. I’ll do one eventually, meanwhile we use IMG coverage it will work for you in almost all countries.
You can get coverage for any length of time needed. Here is the link you can run quotes on. Julie and I use the Global Medical Insurance program, Bronze excluding US, Singapore, and a few other high priced countries. We have 1,000,000 cap and $2,500 deductible and it runs us $195 a month combined, I’m 54 she’s 47 years old. Look over that program and look at the Patriot program as well to see what’s best for you. The plan in most cases will be indemnity reimbursing you for covered services, in major incidents they try to set up direct billing with the facility. Hi, we're from Ireland and hoping to relocate to Romania next year. What is it like for employment opportunities?
depends of your domain and location like all places, in IT it is really good but I cannot speak outside of that without knowing what you do,
It alternates depending on location and occupation of course. Working on minimum wage is tough just like anywhere else (you're probably left with about 400 euros after taxes), but the average wage is Romania is nearer 1k euros.
The truth is that living with 1k (after taxes) here is the equivalent of living with about 2.5k in London or 2k in a mid-sized city in Western Europe. This is because cost of life is cheaper (especially things like going out for a meal or entertainment). Rents are cheaper too but flat prices have sky-rocketed recently (especially in booming cities like Cluj). So, i would aim for a salary of minimum 1k euros after taxes. Anything under that is not worth it. Anything over that and you will live a comfortable life. If you're looking for IT jobs, Cluj is your best bet. Finance, Bucharest. Overall, you'll find the highest salaries in Bucharest, Cluj and Timisoara - coincidentally those are the biggest cities in Romania.
I'd say the most important thing is to consider the city/town (if you can work from home or can find a job almost anywhere). I wouldn't really recommend Bucharest, unless you are under 30 and are an out-going person. All the big international artists, important cultural events tend to happen there. But that being said, quality of life is higher in the top 5 biggest Transylvanian and Western cities (Cluj, Timisoara, Brasov, Oradea and Sibiu). The infrastructure is better there; they are well connected by highways, airports, etc. The centres are beautiful and they are large enough to have enough cultural events to keep things interesting. They are also located in close proximity to mountains. So weekend retreats or winter sports, etc are within a 2h drive. They are also slightly quieter and a good place to bring up children. As far as i am aware, Cluj has some great educational facilities too, but i'm not very well versed into this (i'm not there yet).
I am personally from Timisoara, but have lived in Scotland for 10 years. My gf is currently learning Romanian and we're contemplating moving there and our decision has been narrowed down to Timisoara (top for cultural events - theatre, jazz, etc and ), Cluj (top for sporting events - we love tennis, film and restaurants, etc) and Oradea (it's just ridiculously pretty and not that big).

Dude, I’m a Romanian born who lived in 6 countries (including Ireland), you won’t want to work for Romanian wages😆, I never bothered to work as a dental surgeon in Romania (even if I was earning 3X the average income), Romania is good to live on passive income ( like everywhere else) or to have a business there and employ locals, there are plenty of university graduates skilled young ppl.who work for 1000€/month including in IT, absolutely all Romanians who live there very well (with more than 2000 €/ month in a big city outside Bucharest), either have passive income from real estate bought in the 90-ies (like my parents, family friends, etc.) or are business owners (and those with their own business in IT earn good money with projects for US/Canadian/British companies).
Amazing opportunities, just expect a low starting salary. If you work hard you can double, triple, quadruple your salary. I started in March 2020 on 400 EUR per month net, now 1700 EUR and will be 2300 EUR by end of this year. There are many multinationals here and if you speak fluent English it will give you a huge advantage.

My wife earns a salary of $800 per month for a 6-hour schedule in Brasov and I make $2000. I don't pay rent because we have our own apartment and the 2 children go to kindergarten and state nursery school. And we returned to Romania after 6 years in Italy because it was more advantageous in Romania

@@WarrenJulieTravel Yes. 3 years ago I bought a 0.36 acre plot of land near Brasov and now I'm putting aside $1000 a month to build a house. And after the house is ready, I will rent the apartment.I also have 3 cars, one family car one for my wife and the other one I gave to my parents. I can say that we live well with the income we have. We can also take vacations abroad.
As an American who is used to 2K sq ft houses, I can't seem to bring myself to call 80 sq m spacious. My wife's family lives in Romania, and I know 80 sq m is a good size apartment, but still don't think I will be able to call 80 sq m spacious at all.
In the US we once had a 5,000 SqFt home our last one on the beach 2,500 SqFt so we understand your perspective. After living in Europe we have adapted and see things differently. We had a lot of room in our old homes we seldom used, especially once the kids were gone. Anyhow you can always come to Europe and choose to live like an American if desired, we have scaled back our needs and are now use to 700 SqFt / 65 SqM homes and find them to be quite adequate for the two of us.
Most Romanians are building their own homes as per their personal preference.

Just wanna know what would be an approx figure for an expat to live in Bucharest city because my company is in Bucharest for a single person unlike the case in video where the 1500 dollars was the figure for a couple and a child living in Brasov

As a software developer living in Bucharest I can tell you that 7500 Ron should be sufficient for a month including rent and going out. I live in a one bedroom 44 or46 sqm apartment 30 minute walk from the city old center and I pay 280 euros per month(approx 1400 lei) not including electricity(usually between 100 and 200 lei a month) and for the rest(water, hot water, gas, heating) i pay between 150-300 lei a month. But if you want to know salaries depending on the programming language, experience , they can go up to 18-20k lei a month. Those prices could vary depending on where do you want to leave and what living conditions you want but 7500 lei a month should be fine.

You don’t live a”nice life” buddy on those 1500$/month in Brasov, you live a very basic life😆, if you start going out in nice restaurants (not the neighborhood pub/bar), getting dressed reasonable (not H&M on sale) and going on a nice holiday (not in Greece or Bulgaria on budget), be sure you’ll need more than 3k/month.

Romania is currently the second largest economy in eastern European Union after Poland, the 12th economy out of 26 member countries. Romania has a larger GDP than Greece, Portugal, Hungary, all of its neighbouring countries, etc.
