Trying The Shush Pro Whistle - Review / Tin Whistle Comparison

  • Today I'm comparing the new Shush Pro whistle with it's brass counterpart, the Shush Original, so you can see and hear the differences!
The Shush pro has a black finish, is tuneable, heavier than the original, and has a more rich tone. The adjustments to the blade and the acoustic compound give the pro a more direct sound than the original, which makes it cleaner for recording with, but, it does come with a 20 pounds extra price tag. What do you think of it?

A Shush Pro arrived at my doorstep today. Quite lovely to look at, begs me to not blow loads of air, and has a great balance for my liking. It's definitely a keeper.

We use the same tuner app, and that makes me happy.

Given that the Shush Original is quieter, that is the one to go for if wanting to avoid noise complaints. The decibel scale measures increases in loudness on a logarithmic scale, so a couple of decibels difference, which looks like nothing on a meter, is actually a huge difference in relative loudness. An increase of 3dB can appear to sound twice as loud all other things being equal. Buy the Shush Pro for the richer more rounded sound, not for its’ quietness.

Would you recommend the Shush (Pro) just because of the lower volume or can it also compete in its price range in terms of sound and playability? 🤔

I just got my Shush Pro, purchased because my High D whistles are too piercing a sound for my spouse, and I have to admit that the high range is painful to my own ears.
My first impression of the Shush Pro is that it is definitely heavier than my Tony Dixon high D, brass vs. PVC. I like that weight. It's a nice looking whistle. The polished brass edge around the finger holes is a nice touch. The mouthpiece is small, feeling like blowing through a straw more than a mouthpiece, but it is not unpleasant.
The most important thing is the sound, and the first thing to comment upon is the loudness. My spouse says it's the same loudness as my Tony Dixon, and the next comment is that if I'm going to keep practicing on it, he'll need ear plugs. The lower range seems softer to my ear, but the high range is still quite piercing and uncomfortable (especially the high A). I still need to play with over-ear sound protection earmuffs or it is painful. As one previous reviewer said, don't get the Shush Pro for quietness.
The sound itself, especially on the lower octave is lovely, and warm. I like it quite a bit.
It needs very little air, and it is easy on the lower notes (especially the bass note low D) to cause a squeak. I thought the Tony Dixon needed very little air, but this one needs even less for those low notes. This one is going to need a bit of practicing for those transitions.

the original shush is much softer than the tony dixon high d. I love using it indoors and the dixon when i'm playing outside.

Update: it took me a while to learn to play the Shush Pro without getting a squeak. But once I got there, I really like the sound of it. It's quite a clean clear sound, but there is also a softness to it that's pleasing. Ornaments are relatively easy and sound clean compared to, say the SweetTone. I still love my Tony Dixon high D, but the Shush Pro is just a tiniest bit cleaner.

      Hi
I have Dixon tunable alu, and when i hit the g, a b second octave its very hard to keep a Nice soft tone but i thought it only was my bad blow technique but pherhaps that high octave is a pain for most of us?

With the Pro having thicker tuning, I wonder if the finish to the holes is any different. Some of us prefer holes with rounded edges to sharper edged holes. When you're reviewing whistles, I, for one, would appreciate your comments about the finishing of the holes. Keep up the great work.

There wasn't a noticeable difference between the two on the hole finish 😊

May i ask what is the difference between d and c tin whistles love your videos big fan love music

    • @CutiepieTinWhistle
      @CutiepieTinWhistle  7 місяців тому +1

Whistles play a range of notes in a selected key. D whistles play the notes in the D major scale, C whistles play the notes in the c major scale.

Mine arrived today, spent the day wondering why so many note breaks ,turns out the whistle head is loose with a proper wobble . Gutted as it feels nice to hold and potentially play hopefully shush will replace or refund.

I bought the original and it is a very nice sounding and mellow whistle. My Shush has a glued on mouthpiece so is not tunable unless I unglue it. One person says his Shush original has a movable mouthpiece. I wonder if yours is glued on.

I tried to move it, but it seemed pretty stuck on the original 😁 the pro mouthpiece fits snugly but is greased and adjustable.

I have so many tin whistles and now I want this one🥴
What would you say your favourite “make”of whistle?
I think I like the MK pro the best 😊
I have got the MK pro in low D, Ed,F,And G,and I’m thinking of getting the Low C too.But not sure if my fingers would reach the gap🤔

My sister has the carbonyl in low D, but I don’t like it very much because I feel like I keep running out of breath

  • @OriginalFallofMind

I'd say the pro is more responsive, sharper, louder, and crisp. The natural is more in tune, breathy, rounded, soft.
