Waking up an old lady who's been asleep for a long time, you need to wake her up slowly with patience and care, and you did it with so much love and patience.
When you walked down the stairwell to the basement, something about the dimensions, paint color, and tiles at the bottom made me flash back to Dewitt Junior High School in Ithaca, NY. It was build in 1912 and served as the high school until the Baby Boom made it too small. It became a second junior high until they both had to be replaced with new buildings in 1971. The Dewitt Building is now a combination of shops, offices, and apartments. I always get a kick out of shopping or eating in rooms where I once had gym, sewing, and cooking classes.
Here in Massachusetts, I know of a few schools that have been saved from demolishing. Framingham renovated a 3 story elementary school into senior housing. It’s not as old as your building, but I’m not done. In Fitchburg, there’s a late 1800s wood and brick Victorian style school house that was empty for decades. It was bought in 1994 and made into a private home. Although many things changed on the inside, for reason of decay etc, the outside retained its beauty. The family lovingly brought her back to life, even the school bell in the tower was restored. In Keene, Nh the 2nd highschool built in the early 1900s has been renovated into apartments. I do like it when life is brought back to old buildings, especially unique ones.
I am flabbergasted at how awesomely talented and obviously hard working, eco-conscious and creative you and hubby are. STUNNING JOB. I love your content, editing and voiceover. P.S. holy crap, the kids are so adorable!🤗
YAY for national exposure!! No doubt it's just the first of many. The door glass looks incredible!! Thanks for another fun and fantastic update on your little schoolhouse project.
Your house is amazing and so inspiring. I recently downsized to a 2 bedroom house, which was nowhere near the work of your place, but I have been spending the last four months fixing, upgrading, and decorating it. It has been so worth it. Now I am starting to invite over all the people who helped me. Without them it wouldn’t have been possible. I hope when your house is done that you will have a big party or open house for all the workers who spent so much time transforming your school. I’ll bet they would love to see the finished product.
Oh yes!! Definitely planning an open house for the folks who have worked on it. We could never have done it without them and many of them have become friends!
I own and live in a brick one room schoolhouse built in 1867. It was a residence when I bought it 10 years ago. I've done a few upgrades and renovations to it but nothing as grand as you have done. I live in south central Michigan and there are several one room schoolhouses within a few minutes drive from me that have been saved and converted to homes. There are several old schools in the area the size of yours that are vacant and in disrepair. Your project is a good incentive to save these buildings, Thanks is a pleasure to watch your project unfold into a beautiful home.
As always - beautifully done. The love for this old school with the details - every single detail - much respect. The basement looks like an organized work area not a mess! So happy I found you!
Wow wow and wow!!! The doors look amazingly beautiful!!! What a gift young lady! The transformation is just lovely. We look forward to seeing your videos. Beautiful family and congratulations on the show. Thank you so much for the heads up on the antique shops. We used to drive for over 10 years (1982-1993) students from Chicago to Bethel College (now university) in Mishawaka. Looking forward to your next video.
I have truly enjoyed your dream of restoring something out of the norm! Congratulations on the ABC News interview, what a great trip for the kids and family. Keep up the great work! Love the tiny details that just make it even better.
I am so impressed with what you and your husband have acccomplished. Being a professional interior designer, I can certainly appreciate the hard work that has gone into this renovation. Kudos to both of you and your complete crew of workers. Carol from California
You sent me down a rabbit hole with the Morton School Senior Apartments! I'm studying Environmental Design and Regional and City Planning and have only recently narrowed down my interests to historic preservation and affordable housing. Then, here you come with this gem! LOVE that you're using bits of history from several schools -- so cool. I also love that you're sharing all of this with us!! Thanks for the inspiration and the information!
Hello, I appreciate how creative you are! Your house is looking FANTASTIC! It is one of a kind and seems like a great home for ya’ll and your kids! Your kids are ADORABLE! Elizabeth in Texas ( I am a retired high school teacher- Spanish-English ). I retired in June 2022 at 70 after 35 years of my career.
So many of your projects are fantastic but saving those old doors and watching you work on them shows your determination. My father instilled in me that you can do anything you desire because you can look it up in the public library ( now the you tube channels ) for information! The place is just fantastic and I hope one day you can say appropriately what This old house cost to modernize and revitalize! ❤❤❤ The whole house!😊
WOW, what a transformation! I am so impressed with your schoolhouse to home project. Your vision and the progress you have made is a testimony to your commitment to save a part of history that could have been lost. I'm looking forward to seeing your home during the Holidays. Great job! 👍👍
You can tell you guys have been very busy. You don't have to apologize for the basement. Everything that is worth doing right takes time. I marvel at how much you have achieved already. Great job everyone! I am sure it will be very exciting when you get the house decorated for Christmas. You can fit a BIG tree in that place. Keep enjoying the journey.
All the work you guys have been doing is so awesome. I'm so happy to follow your journey. It just warms my heart to tears that you are bringing the school house back to a new life. Your colors and decorations are spectacular. I envy your decorating skills. Congratulations on being able to showcase to the world your school house home 😊
I drove past the school at night last week and the lighting looks great. The building used to look creepy at night especially. Now it looks warm and almost cozy. Great job by the owners and everyone involved.
I’m jealous of your school house! I can see the basement ,as a pantry, wine cellar, canning food storage, and tornado shelter! I invision a vegetable and fruit garden…. And a “ natural “ swimming pool!
Wow every episode is so fun to see how you are both transforming the old school into your home! The SCHOOL is so lucky that you're all staying after school :)
🍎I’m so glad your video of school house turning into home popped up on my screen, I got really curious and said I gotta see this and now I’m hooked and I also need to catch up on your other videos. You & your beautiful family & Pim pup are amazing! Ty❄️☃️❄️
As always, love love love everything you are doing. The doors are just phenomenal. I can’t even believe you managed to pull off that immense restoration! The glass is the finishing touch. Even the basement is beautiful with all the brick and arches.
I love your channel! I have followed your journey and as always I can’t wait for your new videos. Today’s episode did not disappoint, it was stunning as usual. Congratulations on all of your progress and certainly on being on the Tamron Hall show!
It's coming along so beautifully. I loved the "SCHOOL" sign, all rusty and old. So cool. The outdoor lighting is just perfect! It's gorgeous at night! (btw-we battled mice in the garage. White cheddar popcorn is the best bait for traps, ever. They can't resist it. Good luck in your battle!)
Thank you!! I was so excited to get them all on the shelves-- if mostly to get more boxes outtttt!! And now they're pretty comforting to see every day. :)
Watched a ton of your vids. Can’t believe you can put in the time with special needs children. Congrats to you and your grit, especially with your two little handicappers. ❤️👍
There is a treatment you can put on the cement floors to make them look like hardwood, I don't know how its done but I have seen the end result and it looks like real hardwood and looks amazing, so easy to keep clean too
That basement brought me back to my childhood where I attended a school built early 1900. Our lunch area was the basement. Just chairs and tables. Looked very similar. Well done. Loving your new home.
So beautiful! I love the colors in the office. I think the basement is so unique. I hope you have some fun stuff planned for it. The archways are pretty cool!
Just in case you haven't been told lately I think you and your schoolhouse are so cool.Your patiences,knowledge,insight,positively,forward-thinking are just a few of the amazing talents you hold. Thanks for sharing the transformation of this old schoolhouse into your home. P.S. I thing a man and his books are cool too.
Oh my goodness. That Bob Dylan poster! As a small child in the 60s, I shared a room with two older sisters. That poster hung in our room and scared me to death in the middle of the night. Between the silhouette and the psychedelic colors, it took on a weird look in the dark. What a flashback! ❤Love what you've done to this building. It's amazing! I look forward to seeing more.👍

I have to say it again, you guys are amazing. This is the most amazing remodel I have ever seen and I don’t know anyone who has worked any harder. Love your videos!
You both had a vision and wow so nicely done at restoring this place to be a home that is telling a new story along with showing its history!! I wish I could get my husband on board with doing that to our 1831 home…lived here 32 years and still so much to do, I don’t think I’ll ever see it done! 👍🇺🇸🙏😊💕🐾🦄🦖
I love the map! What a beauty! My attic is "finished" but because the roofline is an A Frame, the sides of the room are about 3 1/2 feet tall. Therefore, I created a book shelf that is 26 feet long!!! As an English teacher, I have books. Boy, do I have books! In addition to the 26 foot bookcase, I have 11 other bookcases. Of course, my kindle is a whole other discussion with some 2,600 books! I envy you for the space you have. If I were younger, I'd buy a weird house for the sheer space alone! Ah well, maybe in my next life! Lol!

Thank you so much! And yeah Franklin is the best. :)
I just love the old lab coat for projects! I chuckle every time I see it!😊
Using glass doors, even if frosted, for bedrooms makes so much sense
The added lighting outside your home looks incredible. You guys are killing it!

Your hard gruelling work on all those doors is mind-boggling. Wow. They are beautiful
Thank you! They were a lot of work but I really love how they turned out.
There's something so comforting about seeing a warm, well-lit kitchen from outside in the dark.
Seriously- I had that feeling all the time looking into windows in NYC!
That is one awesome house/school. The Uniqueness of it and its History are amazing, and y'alls design is spot on!
Oh so glad to see another update! It is truly becoming your home!!! ❤❤❤

There is a treatment you can put on the cement floors to make them look like hardwood, I don't know how its done but I have seen the end result and it looks like real hardwood and looks amazing, so easy to keep clean too
Oh I'll look into this!! For our pantry I just picked up a rug at the salvage shop to hold us over for a bit.
The best work I've seen. Thanks for sharing.
Gosh, your basement has alot of potential. I love the windows too.
And wow, how lucky you are to see the stars from inside.
That basement brought me back to my childhood where I attended a school built early 1900. Our lunch area was the basement. Just chairs and tables. Looked very similar. Well done. Loving your new home.
I bet that school had such cool character!
So beautiful! I love the colors in the office. I think the basement is so unique. I hope you have some fun stuff planned for it. The archways are pretty cool!

You guys along with all the crews are amazing! Coming together very nice!
The school is so fabulous, and the channel is waaaaay better than TV.

❤Love what you've done to this building. It's amazing! I look forward to seeing more.👍
lol thank you! We have a Bob Dylan poster in Margot’s room, wonder if she’ll have the same experience! 😂
@@Schoolhousehomestead 🤞I'm guessing your poster is in a better location in Margot's room.
I was 5 & Bob was taped on the sloped ceiling at the foot of my bed. In the little available light, it looked like an undulating something-or-other over me. Terrifying.
He stayed there till my sister got married. I did get used to him.
And Margot won't have an angsty 15 year old telling her to be quiet and go back to sleep. 🙂(It's a mixed blessing sharing a room.)
Been following since the start - What a journey - and what an incredible transformation. You and your family will make many memories here!
Thanks SO MUCH for the tip about miter shears! Love your new, old home.
thank you!! And yeah those shears- I don't want to think about how I was going to try and do that trim with a Miter saw. 😅
I have to say it again, you guys are amazing. This is the most amazing remodel I have ever seen and I don’t know anyone who has worked any harder. Love your videos!
Wow I love all the updates - inspiring
Beautiful ❤…. I can’t wait to see your basement finished 😊
