I’m English and went to Pearl Harbour 20 years ago the most moving thing I saw on the Arizona was the small plaque in the monument saying the survivors who died later were taken down by diver and buried with their shipmates.That’s how you treat war heroes
I am 60 years old and I have a short story for you all. When I grew up my first barber that my dad took me to was a friend of the family. He son and my older brother went to high school together and the son took over the barber shop when his dad retired. I pretty much knew him all my life. in 2010 or close to that I attended a football game where a special guest was given the task of flipping the coin. The guest was introduced as one of the last surviving crew members of the USS Arizona . That crew member was my barber and life long friend. As it turned out he was the most decorated sailors on the Arizona and was a yearly companion with POTUS on the anniversary. That gentleman was Frank Yanick of Falls Church Virginia . That generation was special in my opinion. Until that game Frank never once mentioned the Arizona although he surly could have.
We visited Hawaii in 1997. And made the visit to the Memorial. Somber does not begin to describe the atmosphere there. I was almost afraid to speak. Of course, in 1997 there were still a good number of survivors left, though they were old men even then. They were there. To see them weep, was indescribable. The pain and sadness they must have felt. So while I’m glad I went, and would encourage anyone else to go, it’s not a visit I think I’ll make again.
To answer question about people being allowed or should not be. Only the national park service members and PVA (which I am unsure whom that is) and reason why they are allowed to do so is to monitor the decay of the wreck, preservation, ash urn installation (veterans) etc. it’s sort of among the lines of maintaining war cemeteries, battlefields.
Much of the superstructure that was cut away was "dumped" in an off- limits area on a remote part of the base; still there rusting away as far as I know

The Kingfisher scout plane (believe 3 were assigned) was not on the ship at the time of the attack; likely on Ford island. Most of the time aircraft were not aboard while in harbor, using the time to get serviced at the airfield that had more extensive repair facilities than those found aboard ship. Believe seeing one of West Virginia's planes toppled off the catapult on No. 3 turret though, and think Oklahoma's may have had some on board; have to check. Kind of the same now whenever a carrier enters port, the aircraft are flown off to the "home" airfield of the squadrons embarked. Helicopters may be left on, but fixed wing aircraft are gone. I saw aircraft on board the USS Harry Truman in Norfolk, but it was because they were getting ready for her commissioning ceremony. Incidentally, in the picture of the plane being taken aboard: the pilot died during the attack, the radioman survived.
In some places it can be 15-20ft deep. Remember, In the late 1890s, Pearl Harbor was made deeper for ships and a lot of that dirt was put around Ford island which is next to Battleship row

Anyone who has visited the memorial can tell you that there is a constant, but light oil slick above her and it has colloquially been referred to as the USS Arizona’s ‘blood’. At some point, the structural integrity of the USS Arizona WILL FAIL and create a massive oil spill in Pearl Harbor. To avoid this environmental disaster, the NPS is always checking the inside and outside of Arizona (while maintaining its dignity as a war grave) to search for any signs that a structural failure is imminent. Hawaii relies heavily on desalinating ocean water for potable use, so a half million gallon oil spill would be catastrophic…maybe even irrevocable if not caught in time.

so, care takers shouldnt go into a mausoleum to ensure everything is ok or, to mow the grass of the cemetery? They need to examine it because my understanding is that there is still tens of thousands of gallons of fuel oil in the tanks of the ship that are rusting away and they are trying to figure out a way to pump it out with little impact to the ship to prevent an ecological disaster. having a wartime memorial/grave site become the exxon valdez is not a good thing to have happen.
It was tried soon after the attack. Unfortunately, many more lives were lost due to sparks setting off leaking fuel and ammunition (much of which is still very volatile and can be easily set off). At that time, they didn't have the resources we do now, not to mention, much of the rescue attempts actually caused more damage to the structure of the ship causing more lose of life to those still intumbed after the ship when it went down. It was then decided to just leave it where it was as a memorial even though there was much protest from rescuers that could still hear Sailors and Marines pounding on the haul for help. To do anything to the the ship today would be likened to grave robbing. I was a Sgt. of the Guard there for two years and every time we went to that area, you could literally feel an uneasy sadness in the air, along with the frustration and helplessness of those who want nothing more than to unearth this tragedy to give all involved closure. Still, it is best left alone, not only for safety reasons, but why cause more grief to the families of those men left behind. Better off just to never forget and be reverent to the heros at rest there. Semper Fi
Early on a great deal of the ship was salvaged but it was too badly destroyed to ever be refloated she was split into two, at some point during the war salvage was stopped as the need for scrap no longer outweighed the difficulty of continuing around this time the ship, which was never stricken from the Navy roles was deemed to be a memorial and is in effect a cemetery for those lost there the primary purpose of the survey is to monitor the structural integrity of the ship which still leaks fuel to hedge against a large spill

All it showed me is how much we allowed the opposition to win because we are still leaving the Arizona and other ships that were sunk that day in 1941 rot and pollute instead of resurrecting them and letting them be the reason they targeted that harbor: their demise. The Arizona and other ships, which is proven in history by the Carriers that weren't there that day that they were hoping would be, ended up being part of the fleet that lead to their surrender.
You really ought to actually do your history. The Arizona was one of many ships sunk or damaged. However, it was one of two or so that didn’t get repaired for combat use. The opposition lost btw, the USS Missouri that is anchored right in the same harbor is where the Japanese signed the formal surrender.
l had a cousin who was in the navy ln the in the Philippines when the NIps captured the country they the navy personnel all were waiting 4 Arizona 2 pull into Manila Bay they had no idea what happened at Pearl Harbor, sad.

My grandfather served on the Arizona in the 1930s. Served as first mate in the merchant marines during ww2. I don't know what ship.
merchant marines usually served on liberty ships like the supply transport ones Hense the name merchant

It’s the final resting place for 1177 men. It’s why it’s also never been decommissioned. The men are still aboard.
TheArizona is the only ship not raised after the attack. Do some REAL history not just what garbage you find on the net. USMC VET. KBAY.
