I'm glad! I did a lot of homebrew back in the day, but this sheet I feel was the biggest community effort. I think we all knew how PTU could be a little daunting to track.
Oh for sure. It took me a few attempts running the game to finally understand the rules somewhat. But character creation always felt like the easy part thanks to the sheet 😄
I'm actually working on a lighter system that's trying to capture the same feeling as PTU, hoping to make the sort of thing one could play without needing a digital character sheet to calculate everything. I'd love to chat about it sometime, especially since your perspective on PTU is probably quite interesting given official development stopped at 1.05.
It's funny you mention that cause I'm also working on the PTR module in foundry as a content dev. We're attempting to expand the system and rework areas with VTTs in mind. I would love to chat though, TTRPG design is a passion I have. Not sure what insight I could provide though. I lurk on the PTU discord, so you should be able to DM me from there. I also have my own if that's easier: discord.com/invite/fnKakyMQ7f
considering how much the utopus region campaign was homebrewed and mixed with other systems i feel like its hardly the same as the original ptu anymore but it was certainly a lot of fun to watch
Thank you so much for the guide! It randomly showed up in my recommendations the other day, and it has inspired me to learn and run it. My siblings and I have been trying to find time to run our first TTRPG, and I think this will be fun to try I'll make sure to check out your other content too
Wow, great video! I’ve been working on starting up a campaign and was trying to learn the mechanics of character creation as well as leveling a Pokémon. I’m very much a visual learner and tbh the videos out there for this game are nothing like this one. So thanks for making this video you did a fantastic job breaking this down for anyone to learn. I’ll definitely make sure to have my players use this video as a reference to help them as they are very new to this game as well. Again, thanks! Definitely earned a follower.
Do I need another hobby? No. Do I want to run a game now? HECK YES! ♥ Thank you for the awesome video, it cleared up A LOT of questions for me! Now I just need some more trainers and try to start an adventure!
I greatly appreciate you adding personal advice, Ive read through the rules several times but without personal experience its hard to tell exactly what is important in actual play. Thanks so much!
I personally love base stat relations and think people not using it are missing out but I find it kinda funny how you ended up stating the bulebasor with in line of base stat relations despite saying to ignore it 16:14
This guide actually explains a lot bc i didnt know where people got information and how pokemon stats would work with this (i know people have done this before but i didnt know specifics) and i wanted to make a campaign with this since me and my friend both like pokemon and he wants to learn how to play games like this. This is really useful and ill probably take notes later and try to go through this with him (and other friends if they want to play)
Very solid guide, great as a new player or for me to knock the rust off after a long hiatus. Would love to watch the GM guide, if its not already out! Thanks!
My spouse and i love this system. Were about to start a campaign of ptr, which is a maintained version of ptu. This system is one that REALLY needs a lot of houserules though. Running RAW always bumps into the weirdest balance issues. My last character, whos been rebooted because they ended on a sour note, ended up a cyborg druid whod use rapidly healing grass types and accuracy debuffing Flash Cases to be asbolutely miserable to go up against
I didn't know most people ignored base stat relations. That was always the most annoying aspect of leveling for me and I had to use natures to get the pokemon statted out how I actually wanted. If it works fine ignoring it though, that'll be a lot easier for games I run.
It's one of the most recommended rule changes in the discord as well. The game does feel better to play without it. The only real downside is enduring soul kind of struggles early without bsr.
With regard to a standard league game, speed is not actually that important for most trainers. Orders have Priority, so you can use them at any time in the turn. Though it does let you throw a pokeball earlier in a wild battle.
@@sajochi Awesome! Started watching some of your play through videos, also really helpful. I've been trying to decide on which game version (PTU, PTA3, or PokeRole) and even though it is pretty crunchy (But, I love GURPS, so not a problem), PTU looks to be what I want for a game with my sons and their friends.
Can you explain what "type-linked skills" are or mean and how to get one? I am building a hex maniac character and want to get Type ace but one of the requirements is this skill and no one seems to know what it means.
The type-linked skills are in the big block in the Type Ace feature description. In order to take the feature with the chosen type, one of the skills related to it must be at Novice. For example, if you wanted to be a Ghost Type Ace, you would need to have Novice Intimidation or Novice Occult Education.
In the rules, at first level for the free training features, you don't need to meet the prerequisites for it. That rule is on pg 13 of the core rulebook under choose a feature. Same rule applies when taking Elite Trainer under Ace Trainer, you get the training feature without meeting the prerequisites. There are other features and rules that basically ignore requirements for other things. Just take it one sentence at a time.
@@SageDarkwindNo worries! There's a lot of text in that book so it's easy to miss some things. I still miss a key sentence occasionally when my players have a question on rulings.
What you're looking for is the fancy sheet. This is the one updated for Hisui dex: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/12RWq2ATMmbqNTngkTlwhwozcyE5Mk_JCA-tfwczx2u0/edit#gid=1084264500 I know there was a recent community push for the Gen 9 dex but I am not sure of the progress of that as of this time.
I wish you luck. I know the ratio of players to GMs is pretty high. You might have some luck making a post in lfg. That's how I got my current campaign rolling.
The damage formula can be found of pg 237 of the core rulebook and reads as follows 1. Find initial Damage Base 2. Apply Five/Double-Strike 3. Add Damage Base modifiers (ex: STAB) for final Damage Base 4. Modify damage roll for Critical Hit if applicable 5. Roll damage or use set damage 6. Add relevant attack stat and other bonuses 7. Subtract relevant defense stat and damage reduction 8. Apply weakness and resistance multipliers. 9. Subtract final damage from target’s Hit Points and check for Injuries or KO. It takes some getting used to. I do recommend using a calculator when doing this. Or you can come try the PTR module for foundry 🙂
So XP doesn't reset to 0 each level? Strange... PTU usually tries to stick close to the gameboy version. Sure; you kept the xp but the bar would behave otherwise.
Not sure what you're asking here. I don't believe the video games ever reset XP to 0 and always had accumulated XP and how much to level, but I could be wrong. PTU works similarly but with smaller numbers. Can't really speak on why that's the case of course. Each level has an accumulated XP requirement for Pokemon, and once you get that amount you gain that level. There's a doc in their main download called "Useful Charts" that gives the XP chart.
God too much character creation . Im thinking of running Pokémon ttrpg using osr dnd style mechanics but I have a lot of rules to home brew after watching this
A GMs guide that will go over the major rules is in the works. Also, there was an old pokemon conversation of the d&d rulesets floating around. You might have a better time with your game by finding that.
This is a fantastic guide! Your advice on starting with features first was something I wish I knew when I started. Well done!
It does my heart good to see that the sheet and game I helped create are still being loved and played. I enjoyed this!

The exp bar under the Pokemon during battle represents percentage towards the next level. Even as a kid I figured that out
