Chills is what they give me. I remember when they first broke out in the late 80 's 90 's that was all I would listen to. Thank you, Tim O' brien and Hot Rize ; you made my life better !

It is 2024, and this band sounds great. I believe they would be a top draw these days.
John Cowan is such a great singer. Sam's harmonies always on target.
Bela, Pat, and Sam's instrumental work, tops.

And Sam Bush, having been lead singer for NGR before hiring John (he told a great story about that which you can find on UA-cam), sings some great harmonies.

I remember the first time I heard John Cowan and then discovered New Grass REvival. My kids and I would listen to their music over and over, each time finding some new lick, tone, nuance, that we missed the previous time we heard the song. years later, we are all still fans of all these guys.

Incredible!!! John's voice superb as always, but every member of this band phenomenal musicians. It took this fine collection of artists to create NGR. I have been a huge fan since the first time I heard them. I just don't get tired of listening. Bluegrass is so cool anyway because all the instruments are showcased. This is Bluegrass with a twist! : )

Each member of this band contribute equally to its magic. My son at 4 years old was sold on bluegrass by them, and now, today teaches strings and drama at a local high school where he introduces bluegrass along with classical, jazz, rock, pop and more. This band has no idea how much we admired them and still do.

Love these guys....banjo virtuoso! won many awards....
Makes me homesick; and for a place I've only visited, but will be moving there in a week, my beloved mountains....and surrounded by rivers....where I belong.
    plan never to leave them....
After living here in NY, can't wait to get the hell outta here.
    Stranger in a strange land....

  • @rtpjavaman

All the solos -- even the little mandolin one -- are great, the vocal & harmony outstanding, but what makes it for me are ALL those little things the banjo is doing in and behind the vocal; it's the beat, the drive, the color, and the originality and virtuosity are unparalleled. How great it all is.
Does anyone know where and when this was recorded?

I think this might be from when they played in a little tiny restaurant and bar called the Town Crier which held maybe 150 people and it was in Pawling New York I'm not sure because I saw them so many times. It does look like the town crier though

I will always love him thanks Leon??? Cowboy Rob from the band the cocaine cowboys 10/12/24

These guys rock so much I seen them down in the New Orleans Jazz and heritage festival but even better than that was when I seen them in a little bar restaurant called the Town Crier in a little village called Pawling New York. The receipts for maybe 150 people what an extraordinary show they put on they are so talented. I was in shock when I saw them playing the mandolins and all the different strains instruments. They are truly a great bluegrass band who bought bluegrass into mainstream music

The solos are all great -- even Sam's little one on the mandolin -- and vocals and harmony are outstanding, the song is wonderful. But the thing that makes it for me is ALL those THINGS the banjo is doing in and behind the music. Inventive, colorful, it is the beat and the drive; THAT's the greatest thing of a great cut.
Anyone know when/where this was recorded?

Has to be early-to-mid 1980s... Johnny C was regrooming and exhibited an MTV vibe ... his hair is evolving throughout the decade and this view is early NGR Second Coming. The set isn't identified but looks awfully familiar - Down Home in Johnson City TN?
