    Good video David, I had both A9 and A7III but not at the same time. In fact I had A7RIII in between the two. Now that A9 is $3400 and can be have used sometimes for $2700-2900, I started to look at it again. It is a benefit to hear from someone who uses them together

    Great video. I've been on the fence between an a7iii and a9 for a while and this piece basically confirmed what I thought, if you can afford the a9, get it. The larger sensor is like engine talk. There is no replacement for displacement.

    Great video again David, very informative! I thought the super 35 mode being better for video applied more to the high resolution sensor, ie the a7rlll not the 24 megapixel sensors, I could easily be wrong though. Keep up the great content, I always look forward to your next live stream or video!

Fascinated to catch an almost throwaway remark that the 𝝰9 with firmware update was practically as good as the 𝝰9ii. I’ve just ordered an 𝝰9, so am delighted to hear that. After weeks of "youtube research", and what seems like hundreds of hours of videos, you have finally answered the question in plain English with real world experience instead of just giving us the specs as a camera reviewer. Many many thanks. I've been looking for a system to get into with a quality camera capable of taking pictures of gymnastics. Way too many $2-3,500 cameras have horrid rolling shutter. I was on the fence and almost bought a used Sony a9ii (was setting up the operation to sell a kidney to get it) That was going to leave me without a second body and lens to film the events and I would just get photos. it may be three years after you posted this video and Sony may drop an a9iii in a few months, but a used a9 is going for $1800-2300 depending on the condition. A used Sony a9ii in excellent condition is $3k on KEH. So I can get an a9 in excellent condition and get halfway to the Tamron 70-180mm F/2.8 Di III VXD. I can't thank you enough.

    Thanks for this. I have been considering a gradual transition from Nikon to Sony for a while now. My D4s has died so was looking for a D5 to go with my D500, two D750s and D800 and a bunch of fast Nikon lenses. The $1000 instant rebate runs out today in the USA and I may well take advantage of it for the A9. Was going to dip my toe into Sony with the A7iii but I do see a few reasons to go with the A9. The real tracking AF and quiet shutter alone may be with the difference. I do sports, events and corporate work. I am only getting into video recently and I think the A9 will be fine for me as a relative beginner in video. From the comments most folk don’t see an A9II coming out in 2019 but maybe an A7siii or whatever in October or so. So for better video I can could wait for that.

    Great video David. I have both the A7III and A9. I got the A9 during a holiday special in November for $3500.00 USD ($1000.00 off). I was hard pressed to tell someone the difference besides the FPS in electronic shutter and the brighter EVF. Excellent explanation as to the critical differences. I’m very happy I have both cameras. They serve different purposes but are both very good at capturing, clean crisp pictures right out of the camera. Being a wedding photographer and portrait photographer both of these incredible tools give me a clear advantage over my old gear that I traded in to make the change. (Nikon D5 and Nikon D850). I lost about $5000 in trade and was doubting myself at first but It was well worth it.

    The camera makers should do as many of the pistol makers do and include 3 grips sizes that are interchangeable. Then you can fit it to your hand/comfort and nobody can complain the grip is too small or too big, it will be just right. Also, as I had mentioned before they should have 256GB on board memory with one card slot. They should offer 256GB, 512GB and 1TB models for premium up sell.

    I have the A7III for a few months and I am shooting sports/running as a hobby. I am happy with the A7 which is a lot better with Firmware 3.0. However, eye focus is not always right on the A7. I am getting 5 frames/second or less in focus with the 70/200 GM. You do need more frames to capture runners in the best stride etc. I love what I have but ... I think I would have been a lot better with the A9 (which I haven’t yet tried though). I would say the added money is well worth it.

    As a sports photographer, the A9 is 100% worth the money. I have two of them now, with the 70-200 GM and the 100-400 5.6 GM and it's a great combo. Sadly the metabones and sigma adapters aren't nearly reliable enough, I'd love to be able to use the Canon 300 2.8, but you lose so many features and focusing reliability it's just not worth it.

I was actually thinking, before seeing your video of buying the a7r3 with 100-400 with the 1.4 tele-converter. The reason for this choice was using the crop factor in the camera for longer reach and file size helps with that on the a7r3. David, if you could please clarify for me. I understand that the A9 is way better for general tracking, but what about eye autofocus specifically compared to a7iii? I'm a portrait photographer and really need quick accurate eye autofocus. I would love to have the option to shoot sports, dance etc. but that would be the second priority for me. I recently bought the a7iii but I'm still within the return window and I have the option to switch. Totally agree. I wasn't prepared to spend more on the body so the a9 wasn't a consideration. I don't do that much video but want to get into it and the a7iii is the better all round camera. I know the areas where a9 is better and none are relevant to me. I've been happy with the evf on a7iii and I can't think of times where I've missed a shot with it. Maybe if I needed to use silent shutter all the time the banding issue would piss me off but I've just not needed to use it yet.
      If you are mainly stills and shoot sports then the a9 would be worth it. Sure if I held the a9 and saw the evf I'd probably love it but I've never felt the a7iii been an issue.

The A7III is very good for birds in flight - just not as good as the A9. This is a really nice review of both cameras. However, I think you are making a very common mistake of not considering other valid modes of camera use. You state without qualification that mechanical dials on the top of a camera body are in general a better form of user interface than using menus. With your weddings and portraits of dancers you have great cred as an action photographer. However in both instances you can talk to the subjects and they will usually follow your wishes. Now think about a bird photographer with a big heavy lens. Wildlife, and I suspect sports photographers are a bit like airline pilots: long periods of inactivity punctuated by unexpected bursts of rapid and critical actions. Often a tripod is involved. Low viewpoints are often good, but often they have to be high to clear whatever the photographer is hiding behind. A good wildlife photographer can find and operate the buttons, wheels, and other user interface elements by feel. The EVF shows what the current settings are and how they change. You can make and verify changes in seconds without taking your eye off the subject you are tracking. Now suppose instead you have something important on a mechanical dial on the top of the camera. Suppose the camera is mounted on a tripod at eye height. You have to take the camera off the tripod, or change the alignment even to see the markings. The extra mechanical lock button also doesn’t help. By the time you are done with all that, Murphy’s Law guarantees that the bird has flown or the football pass has been intercepted.

    • @jamesf3382
      @jamesf3382 5 років тому

      @@jamesf3382 and David Oastler, I am sorry that you both are taking this comment so negatively. I was trying to point out that there might be other types of users of these cameras and that there might be other valid points of view about user interfaces. I don't claim myself to be any expert on either these cameras or on wildlife photography, but I also don't make reviews for a large audience. I was primarily pointing out that for whatever reasons a significant number of photographers use tripods and that others do not feel they can take their attention off a dynamic subject long enough to look onto the top of the camera. David, I think your review could be improved by simply mentioning that you are concentrating on their use in wedding and portrait photography. Comments from people doing other kinds of photography ought to be welcomed as enhancing the overall value of your review.
      Mike, I used to use an A7rii where I did not have this problem. My little episode of frustration was on my A9 last fall, so it might be unique to that camera, or even to that camera's firmware at the time. I recall that the menu system did not seem to allow me to change the shooting mode. However, were it to allow me to, for instance, put shutter mode into the fn panel then it would be possible that the dial on top might give an incorrect reading if I were to glance at it later.
      So, again, David I like your review and wanted to give you some useful feedback. Keep up the good work!
