    Hi,
    I've been coding web applications for the last 3 years now.
    Although your video was posted a long time ago it really helped me out to grasp the basic concept of WCF.
    The way you explain stuff is awesome... You're awesome !
    Thank you so much for this video and probably many others that i will check out from your channel :-)

    Jesse, man...thanks a ton for the video! I am now going to be able to take this and change so many apps that I have written to be more efficient when communicating over the web (before I used to write my own web services)...WCF is so much more powerful. You did an excellent job at explaining how it works! Thanks again for everything!!

    Jessie, I also have to comment on here (what I usually almost never do), your tuts are great man. You take your time and explain everything (sometimes it's a lot too slow for my taste, but that's why we have the fast forward function ;-).
    Anyways, I'm doing a Business Informatics Bachelor's degree in distance study and if our teacher would offer content half as good as yours life would be much easier. Your name is always the first I tell my colleagues to when they ask me where to find good tutorials (2nd would be Mr. Jamie King).
    I was the only one from the whole class who passed the C# exam at the first attempt!
    Many thanks man & keep up the good work!

    Great video, overall you explained really well for someone who never used WFC before, but I have a few qestions:
    - At 41:00 which of the options is more effective in terms of performance?
    - Why did you use Mysql instead of SQL Server since is way more complicated to integrate Mysql with visual studio? Is there a reason beyond your preference for Mysql?
    - I forgot my other question but ill post it as soon as i remember :)

    I think your video is pretty great man(I'm only 13 minutes in) . But I think it would be a better idea to show a wcf service in the beginning play around with it, so we have an idea what we are building towards, and then dive into how it's build and what it does in relation to what you showed us in the beginning.
    But you are explaining all the concepts really well, so I am really pretty happy! Thanks, bro!

    Jesse,
    Thanks for the video. It enhances the traditional training sources. I have a question about the ado.net references. The SQL table is called "Product". In the code, you reference the table as "database.products". Why does the code reference to the table add "s" to the name? I see in the database designer that there is a class that appears to reference the Product table and the class name is products. Why doesn't the code call the table name by its actual name? I would expect the reference to be database.product. What happens if you have two tables, one named "Product" and one named "Products"?

    • @Gangu1307
      @Gangu1307 10 років тому +1

      when importing a database to visual studio using this method, the engine automatically Pluralizes the table names in order to make it linguistically easier. it turns each table into what VS calls DbSet which is a kind of List. and as you may know its common to name lists in plural. for example: if i have a Product class, i would define that list - List Products. so this is what ADO.net does basically.

    I hope you have a solution to my problem.
    A company has 50 web services, each service holds the data structure for the database at the moment. So changing the structure requires adjustments in some, if not all services. Preferred would be to have one place to change the database structure and from there communicate with the web services and leave them untouched. How would you approach that?

    • @JesseDietrichson
      @JesseDietrichson  10 років тому

      Yes you can. However it is a lot easier if you use a metadata exchange. Windows 8 apps cant use app.config files so you would have to set all the info in code. Instead of doing that if you use a metadata exchange you can just right click and select add service reference and its all done for you. Check out the video I made on metadata exchange and you'll be able to do it. If you need any help let me know and I could make a video on it.

      I'm 20 years old and I started programming probably about 6 - 7 years ago. I've been teaching myself programming up until I starting going to college. I didn't really ever get bored of programming because there was just so much to learn that I was also interested. However I did have a lot of challenges. When I started learning programming I was like 13ish and the only way I could learn was from reading books. Most programming books are not designed for a 13 year old and It was really hard for me to understand. I was trying to learn concepts like WCF and I could just not understand it. In order for me to understand it I had to read about the same topic multiple times from different authors to try to grasp what the author was talking about. Up until I started going to college, I programmed everyday of my life and read every day of my life. I thought about programming literally 24/7. I was so addicted to learning programming that I literally skipped out on going on family vacations to stay home and read. So that's basically where we are now. The funny thing about this all is after all of this work I have done, and all of this learning, I can't even get an internship. Microsoft doesn't even reply to my internship requests. Anyway that's a little about me, how about you? When did you start programming?

    • @sirbranson5254

      Jesse Dietrichson wow, ok i always had intrest in this thing but i never even knew there was something like programing by 11..by 15 i could do alot of stuff that most pple didnt know on a pc...but there was no acces to programing books ANYWHERE...i came to know about vb from my dad at 17...then i looked for others..and finnaly landed on c#...all i used was youtube vids and they all mixed me up since i was so excited...now im #18...learning step by step...i found my first harcopy book when i went to uni this yr...and its cool...am sure you are so comfortable ryt now with programing...i so envy you...lol

    The ServiceContract "IS" the interface. Everything you want your service to expose should be lined up there. By adding another Interface (Your DLL i.e.) you're just introducing a dependency to a client. Why as a Service developer would you want your clients be dependent on an outside interface?

    Hi, I'm doing now my final progrming project, and this video is very helping me.
    I just didn't get the part that you separate the instrafaces product from the rest of the code.
    The interface is only for the client side? or it also for the server?
    Because in my project I'm doing interfaces for both of them.

    • @JesseDietrichson
      @JesseDietrichson  10 років тому

      What do you mean you're doing interfaces for both client and server. Are you doing a duplex server so you have the service contract, and the callback contract on the client? By doing it that way it allows you to not only call the service but also have the service make calls to clients. The reason I made a separate project for the interface(service contract) is because both the client and service need to see it. I don't want to make two separate copies because that isn't efficient, and when I make changes in one, I would have to do it in the other.

    • @shiraforkosh5785
      @shiraforkosh5785 10 років тому

      Jesse Dietrichson thanks for your quick response.
      I was a little bit confusing at first(becouse I'm doing the project with windows form and I didn't understant how wotk with it and WCF together).
      However, now I'm understaing why you separate the instrafaces.
      Thank you again!

      Use .Where instead. This will return an IEnumerable of all matching entities
      e.g.
      IEnumerable matchingEmployees = database.Employees.Where(p => p.Title == imie);
      You could also return it as a list with .ToList()
      e.g.
      List matchingEmployees = database.Employees.Where(p => p.Title == imie).ToList();

    Jesse,
    I'm using VS 2013 express and MySQL connection is not listed. I can read the adventure works database thru MySQL Workbench. I'm running Win 8.1 and I selected the "developers" option when I installed MySQL. I had tried to due a "custom" install of MySQL selection the 3 packages you told us in the first video but I keep on having a problem with it not finding the "my.ini" file. When I selected "developers' option the installation seem to go fine. Any suggestions on how to get VS 2013 to see the MySQL server?

    Why would you create a local list variable and not just return p. Products. Tolist()
