This song is telling the story of the movie "A Star Is Born" (The original version of the movie). Male star mentors girl singer, her career quickly outdoes his, and he can't deal.
A very historically-important song: it was a huge hit in the US and was the beginning of what is known as 'The Second British Invasion' in the 80s, which was tons of British acts becoming huge in the US. The first British invasion was of course The Beatles, The Rolling Stones etc in the 1960s.
New Wave is sooo fun! Such a great era in music! “Fascination” is another great Human League song. A few other acts to check out, besides the ones I already know you know about: OMD; Ultravox; Japan; Berlin; Howard Jones; The Fixx; Thomas Dolby; Spandau Ballet; Roxy Music; Siouxsie & the Banshees; and Peter Schilling (Major Tom). You will enjoy these!
The lead singer was in a relationship with the brunette backing singer, so when the blonde was picked for the solo on this track, I would've loved to have been a fly on the wall, to see her reaction! 😮😮😮
I just love your reactions to these 80s songs. They are so pure. Its especially cool watching you react to the lyrics. The 80s had intense and often very political lyrical content that’s masked by the super up-beat music with whirling 80s synths, jangling guitars, intense drum beats and randomly-placed special effects. It’s great to see the music of my youth through your eyes. Thank you. It makes me smile with every video I watch.

I exposed my 22 year old son to 80s music while he was growing up and he is a huge fan of it (literally because he is 7'4" - lol) like you have become! One of my favourites from the 80's is Kim Wilde, You keep me hanging on. I also like Ultravox, Dancing with tears in my eyes. Righeira with Vamos ala playa or No tengo dinero. Also anything from Sisters of Mercy.
Human League have many fantastic hits. The 80's music was simply amazing. How about 'Big Country' by Big Country for another 80's tune. I love this song.
A huge song at the time that their singer, Phil Oakey, thought was not a good song. Well, it put them on the map in a significant way. They may not be making the hits today, but they still tour. I saw one of their shows. They are obviously much older but still put on a great show and Phil's voice seems to be ageless.
This has to be one of THE most iconic songs of the 80's by one of the most iconic bands of the time. Absolutely classic and timeless song and band. This was their biggest hit as well from a good few they had.
So remember singing this song with a friend in a London pub when it was in the charts. We were shouting 'DON'T YOU WANT ME BABYYYY, DON'T YOU WANT ME OW-WO-WOOH' - in a really strong London accent - and then us laughing so much. Really enjoyed hearing this again and so glad you enjoyed it.
Hi Jay, always loved the Human League, I remember them singing this on the Xmas Top of the Pops in the U.K., with someone spraying silly string around.
You're great, man. On behalf of everyone who was in high school or college when this was out in the early 80's, it's awesome to see you really enjoying the music that we've all loved for almost 40 years. It was REALLY exciting when all of this stuff was brand new, and it still holds up today.
Love watching your reactions as you don't keep stopping and starting every 5 seconds..... And you really seem to enjoy listening to all the different genres, this is from my era, always fills the dance floor....
In 1982 I was in Daytona Beach, Florida with my family, from Dublin Ireland. I was 8 years old and there was a girl there my age also from Ireland in the same hotel and we would sing this song all day and hold hands. The other song we used to sing was Ebony & Ivory by Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder.
I just love how different Human League songs sound. This is a very fast and in your face track and then "Human" is another world, slow and sincere. Both capture two styles of 80's new wave. Good stuff.
Please do their songs 'Being Boiled' and 'The Lebanon', my two favorite singles by them Other great synth pop bands from the 80s you might want to check out: Blancmange (Blind Vision, The Day Before You Came, Don't Tell Me, Waves) Bronski Beat (Smalltown Boy, Why, Hit That Perfect Beat) Erasure (Sometimes, Oh L'Amour, A Little Respect, Who Needs Love Like That) Yazoo (Don't Go, Nobody's Diary, Only You) Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark (Enola Gay, Maid Of Orleans, Electricity, Tesla Girls) Ultravox (Vienna, Dancing With Tears In My Eyes, Hymn, The Voice, Love's Great Adventure) Boytronic (You, Hurts)
So...you have their first album too?? That's when I saw then just before they hit really big but I already loved Empire State Human and Being Boiled (first new wave animal rights protest song about silkworms!) Loved them before they hit and after, two different bands really. On a side note when I saw them I was standing in the same upper balcony space as Gary Glitter; he seemed to love them, somewhat surprisingly given their closing number!
This was the year that Human League went pop - check out their earlier stuff like Being Boiled, when they were still arthouse. The track The Things That Dreams Are Made Of is also very good.
Issuing threats is not the way to keep your partner happy. You may get them to stay out of fear, but both of you will end up unhappy, one increasingly suspicious, lashing out, not trusting the other wants to stay, and the other staying, in misery, never able to relax, always fearing for their safety. Much better to let them go, and get help to get into a better place in your head.
Love The Human League. Other songs to listen of theirs... "Love Action (I Believe In Love)", "Mirror Man", "The Things Dreams Are Made Of", "Being Boiled", "The Dignity Of Labor 3", "Night Clubbing", "Empire State Human", "I Love You Too Much", "Darkness", "The Lebanon", "Open Your Heart", "Seconds", "(Keep Feeling) Fascination", "Boys & Girls", "I'm Coming Back", "Human" and "Hard Times". Most people only think they had a few great songs, but they have a ton.
I hear this song and I am instantly back, babysitting my nephew (who was quite musical). He liked to sing along. "Baby!" "Oh-oh-oh-oh." It was adorable. 🥰
These guys lived in a house opposite me in Sheffield, England. Used to see them pile into a van on their way to gigs. Phil Oakley was super recognisable.

It’s the juxtaposition of soulful vocals set against the synth machine. That’s the tension you’re experiencing and what makes this record and others around this time so iconic and listenable. They still sound modern, vibrant and relevant. In all great art of one kind or another you’ll find this tension. Styles make fights as they say.
This song was so unique sounding and fun and why I loved being a teenager in the 1980s when the Second British Invasion hit America and the world in the 1980s. Listening to the synthesizers bounce from ear to ear in my headphones was (and still is) a real treat. You might also like the Human League's song called "(Keep Feeling) Fascination."

This is exactly the type of music that makes many serious people look down their nose at the 80's music scene. Part of that is that is was almost impossible to top the 70's; a magical musical decade. But looking back at this pop rock decade it's not too bad! In fact, it's a lot of fun! Of course there was some serious rock in the Eighties too but this is primarily what it's remembered for. Glad you can put this stuff out there for a new generation to see!
Like someone suggested previously, try 'Living on the Ceiling' by Blancmange. It was a pretty big hit here in the UK during the 80's. It has great energy and got played a lot in clubs. Think it was also edited by the BBC when it got played on the radio and Top of the Pops because it contained the word 'bloody'. Happy days!

As a 10 year old, I remember seeing this on Top of the Pops (BBC chart show) for WEEKS! (Turns out it was 5 weeks at No. 1, 5 weeks is a LONG time as a 10 year old) 😊
We used to play this at the restaurant after closing while we cleaned up. We used the name of it in the song instead of cocktail bar! Good times, good friends! Do these songs have you remember the time and people? These transplant me all the time. Great review!!! Thanks again.
Always!!! But when i hear it and see the clip I always feel so nostalgic and melancholic and sad at the same time while enjoying it...I miss it you know...
If I recall...the two girls in the band had to get special permission to get out of school so to appear on the tv music show "Top Of The Pops" as they were only 15 at the time.
This was huge when it came out. It has that unmistakable early 80’s British New Wave sound. Others worth checking out are “Vienna” by Ultravox, “Fade To Grey” by Visage or “Who’s That Girl” by The Eurythmics. Thanks for the reaction.
A list of these too, back in your last video. This was UK Christmas number 1 in 1981 (I was born 1984 but grew up on this, especially as they're from my hometown and Phil Oakey STILL LIVES THERE). This is from the album DARE, easily their best, I can listen to that album straight through. If you want a REALLY early Human League track (before the girls Joanne Catherall and Susan Ann Tully joined, and before Martyn Ware fell out with Phil Oakey to form Heaven 17), then Empire State Human or Being Boiled (Fast Version) would be best. They formed in the late 70s, Phil and the girls still tour to this day. I quite like Night People from their 2011 album Credo.
This isn't just 80's - this is the song that started the '80s sound.
That's a pretty fucking bold claim there sir!!

The 80"s was a very special era musically. It just grabs you. I was 15 in 1980 and I'm just glad I lived my teenage years in the 80"s, it was just a great era. Listen to New Order-Blue Monday if you haven't already. I bought the 12"vinyl and wore it out. I love the 80's.
Loved those days!
great song from when I was growing up. props to you good sir, I love how you enjoy music from these times :)
Who wants to hear "Together in Electric Dreams" by Georgio Moroda and Phillip Oakey?
Me
I just listened to that, half way through this, before seeing this comment.
I sooo love that song!
Always!!! But when i hear it and see the clip I always feel so nostalgic and melancholic and sad at the same time while enjoying it...I miss it you know...
Electro pop is iconic! Some of it is coming coming! Certain ‘80’s trends are seeping into fashion as well.
You can always tell the best videos from the 80's.....the steering wheel is on the wrong side.
If I recall...the two girls in the band had to get special permission to get out of school so to appear on the tv music show "Top Of The Pops" as they were only 15 at the time.
God, this song brings back so many childhood memories!
The haunted lyrics between Phillip Oakey and Susan was perfectionist
A GREAT song representing the 80's!! Such a great decade of music :))
Wowness! I haven't heard this for ages and I was singing and rocking out with you.
Yes it's 80s but, as you say, it still rocks today 👍
The Human League was huge in my teenage years. Fascination and Love Action were also big hits.
Number one in the UK when I was born December 1981 ❤️ 80s music is the BEST
