I remember when I first saw this video. It was the mid 1980s and I was in a bar in a rural town in Co. Galway, Ireland. I was with a friend who also liked the band, it came on the tv and I was blown away. I think the channel played a couple of Japan videos in a row. It’s really mad thinking about it, I am in my 60s now and my friend has since died. You never think things will turn out like this but eventually life catches up with us all.
💗’Nostalgia burns in the hearts of the strongest...’ THIS SONG was a transcendental discovery for me in my youth. Sylvian is such a gifted artist. Innovative to the core. The whole album (Brilliant Trees) is an inspirational masterpiece, as are his other albums. Japan was a good platform in his earlier days & once he broke away, went solo & also began collaborating with other composers/musicians, his musicality went skyward to new & often sublime trajectories. We thank you Mr Sylvian, for taking us all on some incredible mind-blowing musical journeys over the years. Your work has been & still is much appreciated 👍🏼💗😎👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Even an innovative band like Japan, couldn't reign David in. With his solo work he took us on a musical journey and we were more than willing to accompany him. Timeless music.
Snap , me and my old school mate from Blackpool ( KR) We just were like women fighting who could get that ULTIMATE PLATINUM BLONDE TONER, gel, half a can of ELLNET superhold Oh,,,and MaxFactor eyes lol We looked more like David Copperfield pmsl
Haha, can relate! I got the shag and glamrock stylo (kinda) but it was ffing hard back then to bleach jet black hair to platinum blonde... I ended up with yellow straw locks! 🙈😅
I bought the 7" vinyl of this back in the mid 80s. I used to listen to a "pirate" radio station called Laser 558. I think that's right. I reckon they had a limited amount of tunes to play, so it was always coming on. I don't know why I like it so much, but I just do. Sometimes that's a good enough reason.
Had the chance to see Japan with suport by Sandii & the Sunsetz on the Sons of pioneers tour at Lancaster university in Nov1982 was- and still is the best gig i have ever been to ( and i have been to many ) all for £2.50 also seen david Sylvian in praise of the Shamans tour in Hamburg may 1988 with his brother steve and Richard also on the line up - also met them all after the gig when they made there way to the tour bus after the show and they all signed my tour poster for me - you had to be there !
I get the feeling, too. I was also on a bus when I first listened to "I Surrender", which is almost 10 minutes long with little variation, yet it was such a beautiful experience I'll never forget. There's some kind of magic in Sylvian's music.

picasso is painting the ships in the harbour wonderful line i loved japan and sylvian's brilliant trees album which includes this ,red guitar, and pulling punches.
How wonderful to witness this astonishing video , for the first time. I was distraught when Japan went their separate ways. I'd only really discovered their magic in 81, only to be crushed by their demise. I bought Brilliant Trees ,but have never seen these videos. ❤❤❤
Ho chiuso gli occhi all'inizio della canzone che avevo poco.più di vent'anni, dopo cinque minuti gli ho riaperti bagnati e mi son ritrovato a sessanta ....
This video reminds me a lot of an old american 50s or early 60s film about a guy with an obsession and difficulty accepting reality..he found a liitle wooden shack-type property on a secluded beach like this where he proceeded to rent and live in with his new-found "family"...ofcourse things eventually turned sour when reality crowded out his simple dream... I will try to remember the name of this excellent study of the fragile psyche and the extraordinary effect that fate or "karma" or God's plan can bestow on a human from their own very valid perspective 😅

Finishing in a country that Japan need to thank , Japan,,,,,,,and the mass fans that kept An income ,not that it was enough to buy them a BMW between them!!, they made BFH ( Bus fare Home) from most of their short time as a band ,but without sold out Japan tours , we'd never have got past Adolescent sex, I do wish Rain Tree Crow never happened, it confused so many ,myself included, it was a bit of a *let's do this album whilst we have spare time *! Thanks for ( which DS HATES ) the music that means more than it did in 79 when I went my IST gig, I don't think it's the fact he hates all the early trax, I think it's because his desire to be so artistic attracted the best musicians ,genius"s to be more precise ,very much like Bowie did , I often wonder what work ( forget Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence) they could have worked on,maybe one producing ? All I know is we will never know , I'm actually wondering if they ever made up ? I know there was pure inspiration from Bowie as he did so many because like DS, he changed direction , but there was rumour of not a front page fall out like we get today with snap happy paperazi , but possibly over something trivia that Smash Hits ( lol) wrote, or David Bowie had double Booked DS Hair appointment,,, we'll never know .Albeit, not all of his solo work I like !! even today still , the cobwebs to prove "Blemish" was I mean hard bloody work to listen to , thank God I didn't go the tour ,, even DS today admits it was hard work performing it live ,,,,,, but the track that does it for me is "Heartbeat",,, I can't think of a song that ( brrrr) makes my body hair stand on edge, it's .........words can't describe , I'm sure you have your own,but Wow,,,,, even the video where he gives his beautiful ex wife a kiss ,it's immaculate .... Peace, and stay safe ✌️✌️✌️✌️
I can't believe I was lucky enough to live in a time when this was considered pop music, now pop music has devolved into ladies with big arses, shaking them around and singing about money.
You must be thinking of that song by the Weather Girls from 1983, "It's raining Men, hallelujah", at least it's no longer a case of "Pennies from Heaven".
I do play some newer music at times, but just lately I'm thoroughly enjoying taking refuge in the 80s,as I have done in other eras past. It lifts my mood in a way that not much in today's mainstream pop world comes anywhere near to.

"Picasso is painting the flames from the houses", Picasso's painting named "Guernica" is about that bombing, I think he's right. And "Fire at Will" is a military command.

In the top ten best albums of all time just my opinion though
40 years today. Thank you, David.
who gave this man the right to be so damn talented?

Ooh, that double bass played by Danny Thompson is so wonderful.
I was listening to this and thinking, “Definite 70’s John Martyn vibe…” that’ll do it.
The whole album is perfection. Such talent and so young.

He’s great both In Japan and solo.
You said it so well. His solo was intoxicating. I love it still to this day and forever.
It has been with me my whole life, how lucky I feel - blessed beyond belief
The song is so beautiful my ears can’t believe it and David is so beautiful my eyes can’t believe it

My god, this remains to be so beautiful.
Music can't come closer to art than David Sylvian's
David had the ultimate hair. Everyone at school aspired to achieve the same style, but never quite managed it!

Haha, can relate! I got the shag and glamrock stylo (kinda) but it was ffing hard back then to bleach jet black hair to platinum blonde... I ended up with yellow straw locks! 🙈😅
Yet a few years later David looked quite conservative without makeup and a very everyday men's haircut.
*cough*Nick Rhodes*cough*
A highlight from Brilliant Trees. Doesn’t sound like anything from the mid 80s. Timeless.
40 light years in advance... or 400, what difference makes, He is a Genius....
Great song - beautiful man
The best solo album David Sylvian released , RIP Mr Cruz
So glad to see all these videos being uploaded with the quality they deserve after all these years. :)
Another artful masterpiece.
it started with the "for the love of life" song, listen to his other song, orpheus (my most favorite recently) and so on. i love this!
No way, me too.

Is it on youtube ?
I was at that Lancaster Uni gig too.🤩
I went to a couple of the Hammersmith shows where they recorded the "Oil On Canvas" album. The video of that is on You Tube.
A masterpiece.
My favourite song by David Sylvian but you can’t change my mind about Likeing his solo more then Japan
David , you are magical
I remember listening to this while travelling on a bus on a desolate, bleak, snowy winter’s day in the 80s. Absolutely blew me away.
I get the feeling, too. I was also on a bus when I first listened to "I Surrender", which is almost 10 minutes long with little variation, yet it was such a beautiful experience I'll never forget.
There's some kind of magic in Sylvian's music.

This song is about the bombing of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War
Can you explain that, please?
"Picasso is painting the flames from the houses", Picasso's painting named "Guernica" is about that bombing, I think he's right. And "Fire at Will" is a military command.
It certainly references Guernica, but I think the song is about the whole of humanity and it's ability to be both idiotic and amazing.
