Thank you so much! I learned about this film over 40 years ago but now for the first time I am actually seeing it. Wonder of wonders - a new George Arliss film!
Statesmanship such as his no longer exists. Mr. Disraeli was a giant in an age of giants. No movie short like this one would be made or shown today, as Hollywood studios no longer present individual western countries in a positive or favorable light. Arliss was a great actor, perfectly well-suited for portraying an historical figure like Disraeli. He was great as Voltaire & Alexander Hamilton, also.
George Arliss, being born in 1868, had a life overlapping with Disraeli and was evidently an earnest admirer of the man. Is it known whether or not he had chance to actually hear the voice of Disraeli? Disraeli was born in 1804, and it would be enthralling to learn that we were listening to a close imitation from someone who lived so long ago.
To be honest, I never had heard Stanley Baldwins voice before. The great tragedy of our time is that the Commons was never recorded for public consumption before a certain point. So for an American it's really hard to find out what the notables voices sounded like when, just 6 years later Winston started the early stirrings of his crusade against Germany.
In my lifetime I recall the hoohah when microphones were placed in the Chambers. There was a lot of resistance to this and filming in Parliament. In Britain recording and cameras are still banned from law courts.
Entirely Splendid and Most Morally Persuasive Statesmanship! You are a True Master Mr. Arliss! History Lives perpetually within your Superb Legacy! You stand among my most Cherished Heroes, God Bless your Everlasting Soul!
Beautiful to hear of the “equality that elevates” and the value of civil rights. When Disraeli’s “two nations” (the rich and the poor) make common cause with dignity, Justice, compassion and integrity, we will ALL say “free at last, free at last! Praise God Almighty, I’m free at last!” When the right to LIFE - not just the right to BIRTH, which is the present farce now posing as virtuous - is the highest value, the two nations will be one. Lord, hear our prayer.
You may not be able to remain with your partner when said partner divorces you. Most of our ties are in Europe as we (Some of us, or some of us English) are of Europian desert. So some of us clearly do not need a so called lunatic Tory rebel party who leads themselves in to unions they do not want and reject decades later due to their own errors and mismanagement. There were about 48.2%who voter remain before the Northern Ireland Assembly announced it would remain if Scotand remained. So that may have been why Boris rushed to pass the bill as soon as the potential numbers looked like a swing to remain. Pushing his own personal agenda instead of the will of the nation.
It's amazing that Franklin Pierce and Benjamin Disraeli were only born 4 weeks apart of each other, but Disraeli was PM long after Pierce had retired as president.
Mister Speaker, you will inform the members of this House that their service is no longer required by the nation. This parliament is, by my authority, terminated. Dissolved
Just like Bobby Davro or Aiden J Harvey in the timeless ITV classic series Copy Cats, which is probably out on DVD from the same lot selling Wheeltappers and Indoor League.
I love how Disraeli attempted to alter the ills of the British Empire, not destroy it. He saw the Empire as a powerful instrument for good. Anyways, I am a great admirer of Disraeli, who is perhaps the single greatest founder of the conservative philosophy. Modern American conservatives and Republicans still maintain Disraeli's opinions to the tee; watching his speeches with modern political context shows striking similarities between the issues and opinions of then and now.
@@danielriojas819 I think you are confusing the feature film "Disraeli" which was released in 1929, two years prior to this short, wherein George Arliss also portrayed the famous Prime Minister of the UK.
Modern MP's do not speak like this. He speaks of his country, being a community of law and freedoms. The value of elevating the rights of the citizen in a realistic way.
If only what he said, concerning equality of elevation, were actually true. His words work like propaganda, as opposed to a truth of the reality. Maintaining institutions that are ill, is not necessary; upholding the ideals that those institutions swore an oath to protect, is necessary.

JD1010101110 that's not entirely correct. Disraeli's father converted to CofE (and all the family with him) fter a row with his local synagogue. Grant you that Disraeli was mocked by liberal mobs during much of his life for his ethnic origins.
@@JamesTilsley1 May I add that Disraeli was instrumental in the passage of the bill that allowed Jews to sit in Parliament. He himself was baptised as a Christian at age 12 after his fathers ostracisation from his synagogue.

I realize it is pretty randomly asking but does anyone know of a good website to stream newly released tv shows online ?
This is one of the finest movies ever made. And George Arliss was one of the finest character actors ever to grace the silver screen.

I didn’t expect Stanley Baldwin wow
Thanks so much for posting two things I love Disraeli and George Arliss

Is it known whether or not he had chance to actually hear the voice of Disraeli? Disraeli was born in 1804, and it would be enthralling to learn that we were listening to a close imitation from someone who lived so long ago.
Disraeli died in 1881 when Arliss was 13 so it is plausible.
But his memory so many years later of the voice of someone he was not intimately associated can't be relied on as a good representation alone.
Interesting to note that this film itself was made about as long ago as it’s time was from Disraeli’s
"The time of our grandfather's" Indeed.
You mean we're still in 1980?

Disraeli could be a jingoistic imperialist, but he's well ahead of the current 'Conservatives' the UK have today.

Unity is Strength. Unionists unite in Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and England before it's too late.

Blues Boy Franklin Pierce’s presidency was considered one of the worst by historical consensus.
@@rudranshu65sengupta14 Yes indeed.
This announcer is very... relaxed in his approach to introducing the film.
The 'announcer' is the leader of the Conservative Party, Stanley Baldwin, a past, and future, Prime Minister.
George Arliss ... Classy !
I always thought Disraeli was more animated and running around roasting and joking about everyone. Victoria loved him.
The Crystal Palace speech was given while Disraeli was polishing off two bottles of white brandy, not bad from him
Wonderful vision for Britain. We could need Disraeli now
We live in D’Israeli’s vision, he started the decline of the empire and was a subversive Jew.

Just know learning about his major historical impact via reading Russell Kirk.
I really like the way Stanley Baldwin speaks and acts.

Great George Arliss!
13:51 lol now the speech is almost 180 years old!
JustComments123 actually 146 years ... the speech was conducted in 1872.

I wonder if Lin Manuel Miranda will do a musical of Disraeli next?!
I'm sure it will be equally historically inaccurate and bereft with horrible amateur rapping

The equality of civil rights EXCEPT for Jews, Catholics and Women. Do me a favour!
Catholic emancipation happened in 1829 and Jews were allowed to sit in parliament in 1858, before Disraeli became prime minister.

Disraeli was a Jew by birth and remained a Christian practicing JEW. He did a lot of work for women and Jews.
