  • As our city grows and climate change affects available water resources, we all have a responsibility to do our part in saving water.
Did you know your household utility costs can go up by 50% due to overwatering, wind, or inefficient irrigation systems?
The City of Lloydminster is here to make it easy for you to conserve water. If you follow these simple steps to smart water management, you too can feel as great as your lawn looks. As a result, we can provide lower costs for everyone and a beautiful city for years to come.
Lowering your water bills starts with smart water usage. For instance:
    ● Ensure your garden hoses are connected properly to prevent leakage.
    ● Set the range of sprinklers to be within your lawn.-not the sidewalk or driveway.
    ● Set a timer for thirty minutes to avoid accidentally over-watering,
    ● If you're moving your sprinkler around, wait a period of 15 minutes before re-watering to ensure the ground has had a chance to soak up the initial watering.
Schedule outdoor watering to be in sync with your neighbours, and the heat of the day, to reduce the risk of evaporation. The best times to water are between 1 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. to 11 p.m, with watering spaced out by at least a day.
Remember, the best time to water is in the early morning to reduce evaporation from heat and wind.
For the most vibrant green lawn, water your lawn twice a week and adjust your schedule based on the rain forecast. Because wind is unavoidable, avoid indiscriminate use of sprinklers. Direct your water only to where you need it, as even the slightest breeze can cause unnecessary waste of water and higher bills for your household.
Water conservation is a year-round commitment. There are always ways to save!
    ● Low-flow shower nozzles can reduce your water usage by up to 23 litres a minute!
    ● The same goes for running your dishwasher and clothes washer only with full loads.
    ● Turning off taps while you shave or brush your teeth also helps keep your costs low and the city reservoirs full.
    ● Check your toilets often to ensure they’re working properly.
We all have a responsibility to our water system. Water conservation lowers your bills and city infrastructure costs, all while helping our environment.
So next time you are watering your garden or cleaning up life’s little messes, think water-smart. Your utilities, your neighbours, and the city will thank you!
