Hi Rob. Nice job. I did something similar to convert one of those trolleys into a handy welding cart. Used 1" angle from an old sign I was given. I also had some more 1" angle from a road sign that was fished out of the canal. I have a couple of tables made by resizing tables that had been thrown out and using old shelving (also found) for the tops. I'm like you. I love a good roadside find. Picked up some workmates like that too. All the best, Mart.

Good idea Mart. Steel is not cheap to buy and any free stuff is gladly received. All of my benches are made out of salvage. Some workshops have all the new latest stuff and look like a doctors surgery. Used adds a bit of character :) Cheers Rob

Back in the day we use to pick up a lot of old bed frames from the roadside inorganic collections. We had so much angle iron from the old bed frames that I was able to make a heap of shelving and about 4 work benches for a business which I was a partner in. Unfortunately now the council don't allow you to put the inorganic items out on the curb. You now have to pile it up inside your property, and they will come and collect it.
As you have shown, you can make useful items from what would have ended up in the tip. Good work Rob.

Hi Jon. It's hard to fathom some council decisions. I hate to see waste and the council sends everything to landfill. LOL. So why not give locals the chance to fossick through it. What harm can it do ? People in my state still put out items on the kerb adhoc and most get snaffled by passer bys. If they hang fire, THEN you call the council. Cheers Rob

@@Xynudu I also put bits of steel that I wont use out on the kerb (I hope the council are not reading this). Its always picked up by someone passing by the same day.
The last time we visited Brisbane the in-laws we were staying with took us to the dump shop. That is a fantastic idea. Other peoples unwanted furniture, tools, bikes, etc. are sold at a cheap price. The company can make some money to run the dump. That would work really well here, but I doubt it would ever happen in NZ.

I'm not sure if there is a dump shop in South Oz or not. I never go to the dump. Good idea though. Op shops of the Salvo's, St Vincent's etc do well here and sometimes you see a few tools, fixtures etc. When the traytop ute was running I often picked up old fridges, stoves etc off the kerb and they bring about $10 AU each at the recyclers. Not everyone can do that, but it's easy beer money. Cheers Rob

Hi Rob, It Looks like A Great Start . Nothing Like Using Junk Lying Around for Free Or Cheap.

Hi Wayne. Yes, free and cheap is good. I've used up nearly all my decent junk after this project. Fabrication steel supplies are very low. It all comes in handy eventually. Cheers Rob

I like free stuff as well Rob. Not that easy to find here. We're not allowed to leave things by the roadside. It's classed as Fly Tipping. Heavy fines involved. Would love to see a milling machine on that table!! Cheers Nobby

Hi Nobby. We have free kerbside hard refuse collection by council appointment and they take it away (what's left after the local vultures have picked it over). The councils are very lenient about the odd hard refuse left on the kerb as it invariably is snaffled pretty quickly by guys like me ;) I hate to see stuff go to landfill. It's so wasteful. Yes a small mill would be nice. I can get a Seig X2 (display model) for $800 AU, but they are a bit problematic by all accounts. No rush. Cheers Rob

rubbish pile bed frames are a good source of angle. i don't know if i'd trust it with my life, but for jobs like this it's fine.

Yes. Someone else had already thought so ;) Steel is not cheap to buy and junk often works fine with a bit of imagination. The extra holes just add character. Cheers Rob

A grinder and paint makes me the welder I ain't. Those bed frame angles don't tig weld very well. I don't know what's in them but the steel isn't good quality that's for sure but for projects like this it's OK.

I've only ever stick welded bed iron. I did the whole job with my trusty AC four coil welder and some el cheapo Chinese 2.5 GP rods. Not a patch on CIG Satincraft (which are hard to beat IMHO), but good enough for the job. DC is not good with scrap/junk steel and can't handle paint, rust and magnetism like AC. When the going gets rough, nothing beats AC ;) Cheers Rob
