dear imarieaa, i know you strongly believe they are fighting, however our fish have laid eggs now every three weeks ever since they were introduced to each other. so if you want to call it fighting that is fine but just so you know loads od eggs have been laid due to the fighting!
its the same behaviour for fighting and mating. most cichlids fight by liplocking and holding on. in fact, my gold severum actually killed my green severum over territory issues by liplocking anf fighting that way. it was obvious that they were repulsed by each other because they stayed on opposite sides of the tank before this happened. So, it is false to conclude that ALL liplocking behaviours are for mating purposes.
its kind of ignorant to say that my severums were trying to mate because...my gold severum just had it out for the green one since that day they were introduced. i doubt there was love in the air when they liplocked.
That's not correct....if you check different sites it will tell you that's part of the mating process. They do that and pull against each other to test their strength. This pair actually is already preparing a breeding area.

thats what i thought when my severums did it but some guy at an lfs told me they were fighting instead.

um....they arent kissing, theyre fighting. actucally., my gold severum beat the crap out of my green severum that way.
