@@show-me-retro I think a veteran arcade player can make due with an 8 way for 4 way games , but put a novice player on the machine and they will be locking the controls on the diagonals on accident

Thanks, appreciate it! It's decent for the price but has some issues. Fortunately most of the problems can be corrected. I do like the form factor for these partycades, hopefully we'll get a few different versions in the future
The issue is that these monitors are not normally meant to be turned on their side to get that vertical look. You will get the same issue if you look at a regular monitor and move your view extreme up and down…
I have the centipede 4-1 HSN and the Asteroids 8-1 partycade/wallcade. All of their machines use screens which have color variations from the side: 1) It makes no difference when you're playing, because unless you are looking from the side, it looks fine. all the countercades, and 3/4 ones have that issue also 2) the 8-way gate, will cause issues with the 4 directional way games. whether you want that tradeoff or not, is up to you. i doubt that you or anyone you know will get to a point in xevious where it makes a difference. i can get to around 200k in xevious, with a 4-way stick, so it really doesn't impact me. if i had an 8 way stick i can probably get a little further. 3) the joysticks and buttons are always terrible, but its so cheap to replace them. it's harder replacing trackballs and spinners (which i have done), so they're more playable that way. the spinner has an issue right now, so thats on hold. 4) the game selection for the 8-1 in about as good as its going to get, so anyone complaining about price or choice should realize that 2-1,3-1, or even 4-1 are going for more or about the same as this 8-1 i don't recommend this either without modding, but its fair for the vast majority of people that aren't arcade purists or experts. later -1
Both my 3/4 scale cabinets have no screen issues. I've never seen or heard this before. As far as the gate i am testing an octagonal as well as a square gate not in a diamond pattern and liking the octagonal a little better so far than the stock gate. I appreciate the advice, thanks for commenting
How hard is it to find and then replace the roller ball on the centipede cab. What do they cost? I heard it's poor at best but they are on sale right now for $190 w/ free shipping for an 8-1 Centipede partycade. At that price I will gladly put an upgraded roller ball in it if it's not too difficult or expensive.
I love mine! But what would REALLY kick ass would be an Arcade 1Up that had EVERY PAC-Man game on it. Pac-Man, Pac-Man Plus, Ms. Pac-Man, Jr. Pac-Man, Super Pac-Man, Pac and Pal, even a split screen all video version of Baby Pac-Man! And maybe Pac Mania as well.
Yeah you can't move diagonally with a 4-way restrictor on your joystick, nor can you properly control most 4-way gameds on an 8-way stick. This is just another example of how Arcade1Up bundles incompatible games on their machines, forcing the end user to decide which ones will play properly and which will not. It's an easy fix, but a difficult choice. This example is actually pretty mild compared with other bundling nightmares resulting in cursed horizontal Tempest and Centipede configurations. I believe they do this deliberately in hopes of selling you incrementally less deliberately screwed-up versions of the same cabinets down the road. How hard is it to make a single-purpose cabinet whose design is fit for purpose? I think we're just misunderstanding Arcade1Up's purpose, which is all about money and not at all about creating objectively good products.
Nice. I like the honesty. It's obvious you know your stuff as well. I had no idea this style existed. Definatly some issues to think about. I really like the profile, and portability. The humor is a great touch in your videos. A pinball machine, are you kidding me? That thing looks awesome! Your game room will be epic.
They had these already on clearance at a Target I was at a couple weeks ago, I think for 75 or 100. Dude, I laughed with the whole, "On the wall, on the door, even on the Counter!" great stuff. I agree they need to include screw caps. I say that Step Brothers quite a lot when we clean the house and make space. "So much room for activities."
Yeah, this one has 8 good games on it but I am exchanging it for a new one due to the screen issue. Rexer wants me to put a pi in it which I might. Having fun with it and the new gate fixed the Xevious issue. I bet the ones at Target were only 3 games. If it was this one I'd get it at 75!
You can normally push in the center of the gate and rotate it to change from 4 way to 8 way and the contrast ratio in not great on the monitor so the viewing angle isn’t great from the sides. Pretty common for low quality lcd panels. Oh and on that gate you should be able to unclip it and rotate it and clip it back on.
the problem with the monitor is that it is probably a regular monitor turned sideways and depending on the tech used, it might give you worst or better viewing angles looking at it from the bottom or top if it was positioned in its default factory horizontal position. About the restrictor gate, I would probably replace the stick with sanwa or a good quaility clone and use an 8 way restrictor. I do think that it looks nice and I would probably buy it if I did not have a 3/4 arcade1up already and a countercade. I would totally recommend it to people willing to mod it with a raspberry pi and want to save space vs the other options.
@@bigmacfullerton7870 sure, but you need an hdmi adapter for the monitor and a usb encoder, and if you want to add more buttons then probably a 28-30 mm wood drill bit. Should be very easy to do and not very expensive. Also swapping all the buttons and the sticks would be nice.
This is absolutely the issue with the monitor. It is a 17" computer monitor turned sideways. If you look at cheaper PC monitors they will do this when viewing off angle. This is just the way they are made. If the monitor was turned horizontal like it was made to be you could look at it from either side without much issue, but if you looked at it from the top down, you would see the washed color.
I bought one of these but I'm shocked by the Xevious issue. Lucky for me, that isn't one of my favorite games anyway. I really like the Wall-cade design and wanted to get at least one of them.
The design is great, for sure. The completely vertical screen is a downside but if mounted at the right height or using a stool it's not really an issue
All the games on this partycade are 4 way joystick games except Xevious which is an 8 way joystick game. To go 8 way you have to change the gate inside the joystick box. It can be done but you have to take everything apart and then Pac-Man and all the others won't play well. Kind of strange they added Xevious on here with 7 other 4 way gate games
Yes I agree,. The game really has no business being on this cabinet. There are plenty of other games that would have worked better...Rolling Thunder comes to mind
@@show-me-retro Yeah they are. I put an IL button with a cherry switch on my partycade and I set new high scores on every shooter game I have on the first try with little effort. Huge difference. I actually have the joystick on 8 way since i put the 60 n 1 in it and it works pretty good for the 4 way games as well. You just have to get used to it

@@skyhawk21 I did get a replacement and it had the same issues so I returned it. Mine has the same build date. I am currently going back and forth with A1up about getting an upgraded monitor called the BOE monitor. It is on the HSN 8 in 1 partycades. No explanation why they are using different monitors in basically the same cabinets. I would fill out a ticket an complain about the screen issue... the more people complain the better the chances are it will get resolved
I built a dual screen cocktail arcade, and I used pc monitors mounted landscape. I noticed the same problem you had with your cabinet. So, I turned the monitors upside down and it fixed the screen visibility issue on both sides of my cocktail cabinet.. I think the Partycade monitor is similar with rotated game display. That's why one side is viewable, while the other side isn't really.
My full size 3/4 scale marvel and Mk cabs do not have this issue but they are 5:4 monitors i believe. I don't have another vertical cabinet. But I have heard from other people the ms. Pac man and Centipede partycades don't have this issue which leads me to believe it's a monitor issue

Great video. I'm planning to have two Arcade 1ups back-to-back in the middle of my game room, but thought of an idea - do you think the wall mount would attach on the back of a standard 1up upright cabinet to hang the Partycade on the back of their upright cabinets? Near the top where the screws go in anyway? Do you think that it'd be at the right height? Seems like a good way to save space. Thanks!
It might work but only in seating position possibly. Sorry for the late reply, got busy today. That is a neat idea but in the video I show how I hung mine 3-4 inches above my 3/4 scale cabs due to the completely vertical screen. It could work due to their almost identical shape but viewing angles may be an issue on the partycade. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching, let me know if you have any more questions

I just got one of these for Christmas and I would like to share a few of the things I have discovered/figured out. 1) The stick is 8-way but limited to 4-way by the "gate". People have mentioned playing pacman sucks with an 8-way, but I have been making my own arcade sticks since the Dreamcast and have often played pacman with my 8-way and once you get used to it, it's not a problem. Simple fix; route out the hole in the "gate" to allow the movement. 2) The screen looking weird from the left side I noticed doesn't happen with all of the games on my wallbinet. Oddly enough, I noticed while watching a video of somebody playing galaga in the arcade that the actual arcade cabinet of galaga does the same thing. I started thinking that maybe it was just Galaga itself (though that doesn't make a lot of sense) until I saw you show it happening with digdug. 3) The buttons absolutely suck. They used buttons that look like Sanwa-style buttons, which are considered the best, better than the cherry-key style buttons but unfortunately the ones they used are absolute shit. 4) The screen not being angled sucks. The way they have this designed if it is at a proper height for me to look at the screen properly, it causes my hands and wrists to be at an uncomfortable height. If I adjust it for comfort of my hands, I'm looking down on the screen, which is the entire reason screens were angled in the first place. They could have angled the controls downward and it would have been fine, too. 5) I replaced the button immediately with a cherry-key style and I used a dremel cutoff wheel to make the connection tabs on the cherry-key thinner, thin enough that the existing connectors will just fit right on. No non-reversable modifications (I'm still considering returning it for the Ms. Pac Man cab) That's all I can think of right this sec, I know there was more but oh well...
@@show-me-retro Yeah, pretty much. :) I really started off intending to mention that I thought the screen issue was just galaga, but then I saw you do it with dig dug as I was leaving the commment. Here's something new: I've been playing Galaga a lot and apparently the thing uses some emulator named Moo? and not MAME and I keep noticing glitches in Galaga that I have never seen in the arcade or playing mame. Enemy shots will appear and disappear out of nowhere and I even had a yellow fighter disappear once.
So the front of the one you took out of the box is different than the one you are playing with on the wall. What's up with that? I just got the one that looks like the one you took out of the box, I picked up used for 75 bucks with all hardware.
I just ordered the Ms. Pacman partycade, and hoping there's no issues. I love the regular Arcade1ups, but my wife will kill me if I get another right now. This I can get by with though.

Just keep in mind replacing may not be an option. I was informed the same but didn't believe it til the replacement arrived today and looked the same. My 3/4 scale don't have this problem so not sure why these do

I love my Partycade. It's a blast. Put a new Sanwa joystick in it with 4 pound spring and a clear blue bat style handle. Looks and plays awesome. I want to put a raspberry pi in this thing now
@@show-me-retro Actually thinking about a Jamma 60 n 1 now cause this is a 4 way joystick for more old school games. Guy at diyretroarcade says it's been done and they have the wiring all done for you.
@@show-me-retro Yeah it's $120 for the whole package which includes the 60 n 1 Jamma board and full wire harness fully ready to go. An amp and upgraded speaker for sound and a power supply with all the chords and outlets necessary. It also comes with an upgraded joystick and all new upgraded buttons. It's a complete kit although I'm not sure I really need all that. I already put a killer joystick in this thing and I'm happy with the buttons. They also have a great step by step video on how to set the whole thing up. It looks pretty cool to me .For me it's all about that plug and play wire harness. It's worth it's weight in gold. I bought one from them with my joystick and it just makes things so easy.
Closer to $160 as it doesn't included the LCD driver which you have to match to your monitor model number and you have to buy some screws and minor things like that too
I've had a few comments saying the same thing. However some of the other 8 in 1 partycades don't have this issue like the newest batch on HSN. Apparently that monitor is the BOE and doesn't have the off axis issue. Makes no sense why they are using two different monitors in essentially the same partycades

It's an original baclk lit with led but it has special graphics that make it appear to have digital scores that allow light to shine through. The video shows in more detail how it was made and the digital number graphics

Is there a aftermarket joystick that is adjustable between 4-way mode and 8-way mode that is easy to install on this game? As a fan of Zevious I would love to play diagonal as the original game played. Loved your review of the A1up 8 in 1 Pac Man Partycade.
Sanwa makes an adjustable gate joystick but you would have to remove the control panel each time and adjust the gate. I wouldn't recommend that option. I put an octagonal gate and it to me it's a better compromise. Thanks for watching!

I have the Costco Super Pac cab and it has same screen issue....i own a ton of these cabs and from what i can tell QVC, HSN, and Costco are using different monitors than what the other newer cabs are using.....theres a REALLY GOOD CHANCE THAT USING A DIFFERENT MONITOR WONT WORK WITH THE PARTYCADE PCB....BE AWARE!! also 4way gate is ONLY way to go bc other gate options except a 4way gate will screw up gameplay for PACMAN and DigDug.
I just received a Centipede 8 in 1 and the screen problem does not exist with it. I fully expected to have the same problem but it is not there. Plays good, hopefully trackball will hold up and is an easy fix if acts up.
Just upgrade the stick to Sanwa 8 directional and a heavy spring. In regards to the wobble on the closet maybe some gorilla double sided tape on the bars would help.
I have the 4in1 it has the same side view problem .I never noticed it as I stand off to the right a little till you said something . But now I can't unsee it . Thanks a lot dude lol 😆 that is weird its only to the left side . Viewing angle is usual same from both sides?
I'm currently fighting with them about getting an upgraded monitor. If I were you I'd do the same. If enough of us complain eventually something will get done. One of my subscribers said he eventually did get a replacement monitor so there is hope

can you do a video on how you did the mods ? I have this partycade but I'm having problem replacingt the springs and buttons. Did you have to take apart everything to do them ? also are the Happ buttons just plug and play?
The two side screws on each side of the control panel gives you access to the joystick and buttons. Just make sure to unplug the audio cable that is attached. I did a video on the happ button replacement that is simple to follow. There are lots of videos on the spring on youtube. Letvme know if this helped
Can you explain in a little more detail the modifications you made, or you recommend, to the joystick? I just ordered the HSN 8-1 PacMan that has Xevious on it, and I will want all 8 games to be playable. Also, would you be able to provide a link to the spring you purchased? Are those easy to install? This is the first machine like this I have ever purchased, so I don't have a great understanding on how difficult it will be to make changes. Good video review and great dog -- I have a four year old Standard myself and they are the best dogs.
So, the joystick mod only has a 4lb spring focusattack.com/4lb-tension-spring-for-sanwa-jlf/ There are lots of decent videos of how to replace these on arcade1up. The buttons I have a link and just uploaded a tutorial on those. I didn't include the spring but it's not too difficult. The C washer is the hardest part. Make sure you remove it with something in front of you like the back of a chair in case it goes flying and you don't lose it. The marquee is optional as well as covering the exposed screws
BTW, thanks for the comments on Max. He is 4 years old as well. Standards are the best breed of dog for sure. He is such a dear friend and I honestly can't imagine owning any other breed. Let me know if you have any other questions about the mods

I'll let you know if I try the spring and gate changes on the Pac Man. These will be the first two arcade machines I have owned outside of a full-size Stargate I had for many years. I didn't need to do much with that except fix buttons/contacts on occasion, so most of this will be new.
I saw this on HSN and wanted to know more about it. Thanks for the great review. I hate that the fire buttons on most arcades are on the right side. To me steering should be handled with the right hand considering most people are right handed and firing should be controlled by the left hand. 4 Standard Poodles...OMG that's amazing! Best dogs ever, so jealous. As far as the control configuration you may have to have one custom made unfortunately. It's not that difficult, just re-cut tge board out of mdf and swap the controls to your liking. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching and would love to see some pics of those pups.
Back in the day, many people would play games like Galaga with their hands crossed because they preferred moving with their right hand. Truthfully, if you are right handed, it's probably best to have the buttons on your right, because it's more difficult to fire rapidly than move.
Any updates from Arcade 1UP on the screen washing out and the other issues? I just bought this and it's coming soon. Maybe I should just not open it and send it back.
Well, one of my subscribers has been going back and forth with A1up and they are apparently sending him a new monitor. As far as the gate issue i did replace with an octagonal that they sent to me and I'm liking it better than the square gate. I am currently trying to get a new monitor as well since the replacement unit they suggested had the same issue from QVC. You may get lucky and have an upgraded BOE monitor like the black 8 in 1 partycade from HSN which apparently doesn't have the screen issue. If these things were fixed and the buttons were better quality I guarantee you would enjoy the cabinet. Fingers crossed it problem free. Hope this helps

I did just receive and open the PacMan 4 game TableTop 40th Anniv. with the brown wood sides from HSN, and it has the same issue with it washing out on the left side only. WTH? This game LITERALLY just came out. No excuse for that Arcade 1Up. The screen also had a big ole scratch in the middle of the screen cover and I couldn't remove the stupid screwed down sticker film without removing all four screws to finish removing the sticker at the top of the play screen! Now it has the scratch and dust behind it since I had to remove it. This isn't cool. Still waiting on the black party cade which should be fine, but the special PM 4 game tabletop shouldn't be using those subpar screens. This is a new item. I wonder if there is a "version" that uses the better non messed up screen of it too. First time and possibly last I buy anything from Arcade Up. What the heck is wrong with them over there?
Unfortunately they cut a lot of corners in bringing the arcade experience home and they apparently have a lot of QC issues. Some of the larger cabinets have been really good like the Star Wars but others have not
THe problem is - they had to make a choice use the 4 way restrictor and have 7 of the games play properly or use an 8 way restrictor for xevious and mess up game play in the 7 other 4 way games ( ie. Pacman will not turn properly if you hit a diagonal ) - Since xevious can be played with the 4 way restrictor they made the correct choice and went with a 4 way gate instead of messing up the other 7 games ( They should have left xevious off and added another 4 way game unfortunately they tend to mix games on the list like this due to the license holders wanting certain games on the machines )
Be careful what you ask for. If they add an 8 way controller for the one obscure game you won't like how it interferes with the games that only require 4 way gate. I hate that about my multicade mame machine that I built when I try to play pacman style games.
I actually did replace it with an octagonal gate to see how much difference it makes and ODDLY I think I like the 8 way better than the 4 way. It shouldn't be that way but my scores have improved on Mappy and Dig Dug since the swap so I guess I'm content for now. Thanks for the comment
Nice review! How is Arcade1Up’s customer service? I bought a NBA Jam countercade on Black Friday and I’m a little disappointed that nowhere in the advertising does it clarify that the NBA roster is incomplete. And it’s not just incomplete - dozens of players are opted out of it most notably Reggie Miller. This is the equivalent of going to see your favorite band but finding out it is only a few members in their old age making a quick buck. The countercade is arriving tomorrow and I don’t think it’s worth returning at $80. Not sure if customer service would offer anything for the misleading advertising. I just got into these arcades and I’m learning from you and Rexxer all the issues that they’re having. What a complete mess…
Customer service is probably better than it used to be but you won't really have a case with the roster issue unfortunately. NFL Blitz is the same way, with all the stuff missing it's just not the same game

Great Video Pat! Ashame about Zevious. Pretty dumb on their part! Mods looks great. Defective screen is a deal breaker for sure. But that could happen on any unit. Sucks it happened to you. That is usually my kind of luck. I would try the community on getting a new one since you already have the unit up to snuff!
probably nothing wrong w/ the screen its a rotated normal LCD (polarization film is what you're noticing when viewing off axis) old laptops have this problem also
Arcade Ups Pacman 4 game 40th-anniversary tablecade with the side brown woodgrain has the same side view screen issue and that literally just came out. Very disappointing....

No, but the newer version does have dipswitch settings so it's possible the current one being sold does. Also the screen is better on the newer version. Hope that helps. I don't know exactly every dipswitch setting though so I don't want to say for sure
You have no problems changing out the buttons for real Happ, getting custom parts and graphics, but changing the restrictor plate on a joystick is insurmountable? They probably went with a 4-way gate because the main titles use a 4-way or 2-way gate in the real machines. Xevious is the only title that has an 8-way stick. The Pac-Man games and Dig Dug are 4-way, Galaxian and Galaga are 2-way. If you want an 8-way restrictor put one in there, but it's going to make the Pac-Man games a not so great experience. If anything the issue isn't the stick, it's correct for the bulk of the games, the problem is the inclusion of Xevious in a cab that has a 4-way stick as it should for the headline titles. Also the issues you mention with the screen, you're pretty far off axis when the color washes out. It's not a left/right issue, it's an up/down issue because that is a monitor turned 90-degrees from the intended orientation. They're not designed for someone to look up ah them from underneath when oriented horizontally, which is why you're seeing that from one side and not the other. It should still be fine for straight on viewing, and at the end of your review your camera is off to the left and the screen looks fine.
I hope to have a video out within the week that explains it better since a lot of the videos on UA-cam don't do a very good job explaining it. It's not hard and it's inexpensive. That control panel comes off easily when the two screws on each side are removed. Then you can upgrade the joystick spring, as well as the buttons but again I hope explain it in a video this week sometime
You can add a raspberry pi which i think would fit. I haven't seen any videos detailing this but I know people have. There's also a 60 in 1 kit that could be installed from DIY Retro Arcade
@@show-me-retro - That issue is the TN panel monitor they use -- They are made with poor viewing angles since they are designed for horizontal mounting and sitting on a desk ( ie. computer monitors) so you normally do not have them sitting above/below eye level and the color shifting is not an issue - but when you instead place them vertically it means poor viewing angles on the left/right sides instead of top/bottom which means you have to stay directly in front of the machine. A replacement is going to have the same issue since it will still be using the same TN panel ( for this type of usage they should be using an IPS panel but that adds cost to the units )

@@show-me-retro - The BOE monitor may be an IPS panel instead of TN - Here is an article on the difference between the 2 types ( www.trustedreviews.com/news/ips-vs-tn-vs-va-gaming-performance-colour-explained-2948955 ) - IIRC A1U changed to the BOE panels after complaints about the first gen monitors - so they probably went to an IPS panel as in the Qty they are ordering the price difference is probably negligible and they were probably able to negotiate a better deal for them since they then also had a better idea of how many units they would be ordering ( the newer 3/4 cabs also use the BOE monitors)

As far as the buttons, I'm hoping to upload a video soon which is a little easier to follow than some other channels. The stick i swapped the 1lb spring for a 4lb. There are lots of videos on that swap. To access the control panel remove the two screws on each side of the panel and unplug the ribbon cable and sound cable and it will become free. You mean add more games or get to the main menu? Holding down player 1 for 5 seconds gets you back to the main menu. Adding a Pi would give you more games butvi haven't done that yet

There's no reason why even at $200 they couldn't put better sticks and buttons in these cabinets. These are inexpensive items and even an led strip behind the marquee would cost basically nothing. I don't think it's too much to ask but I appreciate your opinion
This will sound rude, but IDC. A bit incredulous that you would be doing these kinds of reviews, yet wouldn't understand the nature of 4-way and 8-way joysticks / restrictors. A 4-way joystick on a Pac-Man machine is not a "problem", it's a necessity. But I definitely don't know why they would subsequently include Xevious or any 8-way game ON the cabinet, other than laziness / money saving on licensing. Yeah, I guess that sucks, but almost any enthusiast (apparently not you, though) would rather just keep the proper 4-way control on Pac-Man and the others, vs. caring about the diagonal movement in Xevious. And to the causal player who still may not understand what I'm saying, since they grew up with analog gamepads and similar - more is absolutely not better when it comes to arcade games. It's not "8 ways > 4 ways, what were they thinking?" It's, 8-way control in Pac-Man and others will literally screw up your ability to properly control the game, and cause the Pac-Man to hiccup / not obey you / screw up, because the original game was designed to have 4-way only.
Yes, all of them. My nephew got it for Christmas and the screen is great, the controls were surprisingly good and it had an options menu with adjustable difficulty etc. Very much improved

The issue is that these monitors are not normally meant to be turned on their side to get that vertical look. You will get the same issue if you look at a regular monitor and move your view extreme up and down…

I have the centipede 4-1 HSN and the Asteroids 8-1 partycade/wallcade.
All of their machines use screens which have color variations from the side:
1) It makes no difference when you're playing, because unless you
are looking from the side, it looks fine. all the countercades,
and 3/4 ones have that issue also
2) the 8-way gate, will cause issues with the 4 directional way games.
whether you want that tradeoff or not, is up to you.
i doubt that you or anyone you know will get to a point in xevious
where it makes a difference.
i can get to around 200k in xevious, with a 4-way stick, so it really
doesn't impact me. if i had an 8 way stick i can probably get a little further.
3) the joysticks and buttons are always terrible, but its so cheap to
replace them. it's harder replacing trackballs and spinners (which i have done),
so they're more playable that way. the spinner has an issue right now, so thats on hold.
4) the game selection for the 8-1 in about as good as its going to get,
so anyone complaining about price or choice should realize that 2-1,3-1,
or even 4-1 are going for more or about the same as this 8-1
i don't recommend this either without modding, but its fair for the vast
majority of people that aren't arcade purists or experts.

Both my 3/4 scale cabinets have no screen issues. I've never seen or heard this before. As far as the gate i am testing an octagonal as well as a square gate not in a diamond pattern and liking the octagonal a little better so far than the stock gate. I appreciate the advice, thanks for commenting
How hard is it to find and then replace the roller ball on the centipede cab. What do they cost? I heard it's poor at best but they are on sale right now for $190 w/ free shipping for an 8-1 Centipede partycade. At that price I will gladly put an upgraded roller ball in it if it's not too difficult or expensive.
I love mine! But what would REALLY kick ass would be an Arcade 1Up that had EVERY PAC-Man game on it.
Pac-Man, Pac-Man Plus, Ms. Pac-Man, Jr. Pac-Man, Super Pac-Man, Pac and Pal, even a split screen all video version of Baby Pac-Man! And maybe Pac Mania as well.
Yeah you can't move diagonally with a 4-way restrictor on your joystick, nor can you properly control most 4-way gameds on an 8-way stick. This is just another example of how Arcade1Up bundles incompatible games on their machines, forcing the end user to decide which ones will play properly and which will not. It's an easy fix, but a difficult choice. This example is actually pretty mild compared with other bundling nightmares resulting in cursed horizontal Tempest and Centipede configurations. I believe they do this deliberately in hopes of selling you incrementally less deliberately screwed-up versions of the same cabinets down the road.
How hard is it to make a single-purpose cabinet whose design is fit for purpose? I think we're just misunderstanding Arcade1Up's purpose, which is all about money and not at all about creating objectively good products.

Yeah, this one has 8 good games on it but I am exchanging it for a new one due to the screen issue. Rexer wants me to put a pi in it which I might. Having fun with it and the new gate fixed the Xevious issue. I bet the ones at Target were only 3 games. If it was this one I'd get it at 75!

You can normally push in the center of the gate and rotate it to change from 4 way to 8 way and the contrast ratio in not great on the monitor so the viewing angle isn’t great from the sides. Pretty common for low quality lcd panels. Oh and on that gate you should be able to unclip it and rotate it and clip it back on.
the problem with the monitor is that it is probably a regular monitor turned sideways and depending on the tech used, it might give you worst or better viewing angles looking at it from the bottom or top if it was positioned in its default factory horizontal position. About the restrictor gate, I would probably replace the stick with sanwa or a good quaility clone and use an 8 way restrictor. I do think that it looks nice and I would probably buy it if I did not have a 3/4 arcade1up already and a countercade. I would totally recommend it to people willing to mod it with a raspberry pi and want to save space vs the other options.

@@bigmacfullerton7870 sure, but you need an hdmi adapter for the monitor and a usb encoder, and if you want to add more buttons then probably a 28-30 mm wood drill bit. Should be very easy to do and not very expensive. Also swapping all the buttons and the sticks would be nice.
This is absolutely the issue with the monitor. It is a 17" computer monitor turned sideways. If you look at cheaper PC monitors they will do this when viewing off angle. This is just the way they are made. If the monitor was turned horizontal like it was made to be you could look at it from either side without much issue, but if you looked at it from the top down, you would see the washed color.

I bought one of these but I'm shocked by the Xevious issue. Lucky for me, that isn't one of my favorite games anyway. I really like the Wall-cade design and wanted to get at least one of them.
The design is great, for sure. The completely vertical screen is a downside but if mounted at the right height or using a stool it's not really an issue
All the games on this partycade are 4 way joystick games except Xevious which is an 8 way joystick game. To go 8 way you have to change the gate inside the joystick box. It can be done but you have to take everything apart and then Pac-Man and all the others won't play well. Kind of strange they added Xevious on here with 7 other 4 way gate games
Yes I agree,. The game really has no business being on this cabinet. There are plenty of other games that would have worked better...Rolling Thunder comes to mind
The 8 gate will make miss turns on Pacman and Super Pacman turns are hard enough. I can't imagine paying it with a 8 gate stick.
I put a Sanwa Joystick in mine and it never misses a turn now....even playing Pac Man. But yeah it's set on 4 way
I would recommend Happ buttons as well, they are light years ahead of the stick ones
@@show-me-retro Yeah they are. I put an IL button with a cherry switch on my partycade and I set new high scores on every shooter game I have on the first try with little effort. Huge difference. I actually have the joystick on 8 way since i put the 60 n 1 in it and it works pretty good for the 4 way games as well. You just have to get used to it

I am currently going back and forth with A1up about getting an upgraded monitor called the BOE monitor. It is on the HSN 8 in 1 partycades. No explanation why they are using different monitors in basically the same cabinets. I would fill out a ticket an complain about the screen issue... the more people complain the better the chances are it will get resolved
You can buy a 4&8 way joystick. PAC-man needs a 4 way or it won’t play right, they don’t use them in their arcades to keep the cost down.

I built a dual screen cocktail arcade, and I used pc monitors mounted landscape. I noticed the same problem you had with your cabinet. So, I turned the monitors upside down and it fixed the screen visibility issue on both sides of my cocktail cabinet.. I think the Partycade monitor is similar with rotated game display. That's why one side is viewable, while the other side isn't really.
So your saying i should flip the monitor?

My full size 3/4 scale marvel and Mk cabs do not have this issue but they are 5:4 monitors i believe. I don't have another vertical cabinet. But I have heard from other people the ms. Pac man and Centipede partycades don't have this issue which leads me to believe it's a monitor issue

Great video. I'm planning to have two Arcade 1ups back-to-back in the middle of my game room, but thought of an idea - do you think the wall mount would attach on the back of a standard 1up upright cabinet to hang the Partycade on the back of their upright cabinets? Near the top where the screws go in anyway? Do you think that it'd be at the right height? Seems like a good way to save space. Thanks!
It might work but only in seating position possibly. Sorry for the late reply, got busy today. That is a neat idea but in the video I show how I hung mine 3-4 inches above my 3/4 scale cabs due to the completely vertical screen. It could work due to their almost identical shape but viewing angles may be an issue on the partycade. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching, let me know if you have any more questions

I just got one of these for Christmas and I would like to share a few of the things I have discovered/figured out.
1) The stick is 8-way but limited to 4-way by the "gate". People have mentioned playing pacman sucks with an 8-way, but I have been making my own arcade sticks since the Dreamcast and have often played pacman with my 8-way and once you get used to it, it's not a problem. Simple fix; route out the hole in the "gate" to allow the movement.
2) The screen looking weird from the left side I noticed doesn't happen with all of the games on my wallbinet. Oddly enough, I noticed while watching a video of somebody playing galaga in the arcade that the actual arcade cabinet of galaga does the same thing. I started thinking that maybe it was just Galaga itself (though that doesn't make a lot of sense) until I saw you show it happening with digdug.
3) The buttons absolutely suck. They used buttons that look like Sanwa-style buttons, which are considered the best, better than the cherry-key style buttons but unfortunately the ones they used are absolute shit.
4) The screen not being angled sucks. The way they have this designed if it is at a proper height for me to look at the screen properly, it causes my hands and wrists to be at an uncomfortable height. If I adjust it for comfort of my hands, I'm looking down on the screen, which is the entire reason screens were angled in the first place. They could have angled the controls downward and it would have been fine, too.
5) I replaced the button immediately with a cherry-key style and I used a dremel cutoff wheel to make the connection tabs on the cherry-key thinner, thin enough that the existing connectors will just fit right on. No non-reversable modifications (I'm still considering returning it for the Ms. Pac Man cab)
That's all I can think of right this sec, I know there was more but oh well...

@@show-me-retro Yeah, pretty much. :) I really started off intending to mention that I thought the screen issue was just galaga, but then I saw you do it with dig dug as I was leaving the commment. Here's something new: I've been playing Galaga a lot and apparently the thing uses some emulator named Moo? and not MAME and I keep noticing glitches in Galaga that I have never seen in the arcade or playing mame. Enemy shots will appear and disappear out of nowhere and I even had a yellow fighter disappear once.

I love my Partycade. It's a blast. Put a new Sanwa joystick in it with 4 pound spring and a clear blue bat style handle. Looks and plays awesome. I want to put a raspberry pi in this thing now

@@show-me-retro Actually thinking about a Jamma 60 n 1 now cause this is a 4 way joystick for more old school games. Guy at diyretroarcade says it's been done and they have the wiring all done for you.

@@show-me-retro Yeah it's $120 for the whole package which includes the 60 n 1 Jamma board and full wire harness fully ready to go. An amp and upgraded speaker for sound and a power supply with all the chords and outlets necessary. It also comes with an upgraded joystick and all new upgraded buttons. It's a complete kit although I'm not sure I really need all that. I already put a killer joystick in this thing and I'm happy with the buttons. They also have a great step by step video on how to set the whole thing up. It looks pretty cool to me .For me it's all about that plug and play wire harness. It's worth it's weight in gold. I bought one from them with my joystick and it just makes things so easy.
Closer to $160 as it doesn't included the LCD driver which you have to match to your monitor model number and you have to buy some screws and minor things like that too
I think the left side loss of viewing is standard for these monitors. It is something that I think is less noticeable when in horizontal mount.
I've had a few comments saying the same thing. However some of the other 8 in 1 partycades don't have this issue like the newest batch on HSN. Apparently that monitor is the BOE and doesn't have the off axis issue. Makes no sense why they are using two different monitors in essentially the same partycades

It's an original baclk lit with led but it has special graphics that make it appear to have digital scores that allow light to shine through. The video shows in more detail how it was made and the digital number graphics

Sanwa makes an adjustable gate joystick but you would have to remove the control panel each time and adjust the gate. I wouldn't recommend that option. I put an octagonal gate and it to me it's a better compromise. Thanks for watching!

I have the Costco Super Pac cab and it has same screen issue....i own a ton of these cabs and from what i can tell QVC, HSN, and Costco are using different monitors than what the other newer cabs are using.....theres a REALLY GOOD CHANCE THAT USING A DIFFERENT MONITOR WONT WORK WITH THE PARTYCADE PCB....BE AWARE!! also 4way gate is ONLY way to go bc other gate options except a 4way gate will screw up gameplay for PACMAN and DigDug.

I just received a Centipede 8 in 1 and the screen problem does not exist with it. I fully expected to have the same problem but it is not there. Plays good, hopefully trackball will hold up and is an easy fix if acts up.

In regards to the wobble on the closet maybe some gorilla double sided tape on the bars would help.

The screen issue is ongoing... Arcade1up still has a ticket open and haven't resolved the issue yet. I hopefully will do an update if things change

The two side screws on each side of the control panel gives you access to the joystick and buttons. Just make sure to unplug the audio cable that is attached. Can you explain in a little more detail the modifications you made, or you recommend, to the joystick? I just ordered the HSN 8-1 PacMan that has Xevious on it, and I will want all 8 games to be playable. Also, would you be able to provide a link to the spring you purchased? Are those easy to install? This is the first machine like this I have ever purchased, so I don't have a great understanding on how difficult it will be to make changes. Good video review and great dog -- I have a four year old Standard myself and they are the best dogs.

There are lots of decent videos of how to replace these on arcade1up. The buttons I have a link and just uploaded a tutorial on those. I didn't include the spring but it's not too difficult. The C washer is the hardest part. Make sure you remove it with something in front of you like the back of a chair in case it goes flying and you don't lose it. The marquee is optional as well as covering the exposed screws
BTW, thanks for the comments on Max. He is 4 years old as well. Standards are the best breed of dog for sure. He is such a dear friend and I honestly can't imagine owning any other breed.

I'll let you know if I try the spring and gate changes on the Pac Man. These will be the first two arcade machines I have owned outside of a full-size Stargate I had for many years. I didn't need to do much with that except fix buttons/contacts on occasion, so most of this will be new.

I saw this on HSN and wanted to know more about it. Thanks for the great review. I hate that the fire buttons on most arcades are on the right side. To me steering should be handled with the right hand considering most people are right handed and firing should be controlled by the left hand. 4 Standard Poodles...OMG that's amazing! Best dogs ever, so jealous. As far as the control configuration you may have to have one custom made unfortunately. Back in the day, many people would play games like Galaga with their hands crossed because they preferred moving with their right hand. Truthfully, if you are right handed, it's probably best to have the buttons on your right, because it's more difficult to fire rapidly than move.

Well, one of my subscribers has been going back and forth with A1up and they are apparently sending him a new monitor. As far as the gate issue i did replace with an octagonal that they sent to me and I'm liking it better than the square gate.
I am currently trying to get a new monitor as well since the replacement unit they suggested had the same issue from QVC. You may get lucky and have an upgraded BOE monitor like the black 8 in 1 partycade from HSN which apparently doesn't have the screen issue. If these things were fixed and the buttons were better quality I guarantee you would enjoy the cabinet. Fingers crossed it problem free. Hope this helps

I did just receive and open the PacMan 4 game TableTop 40th Anniv. with the brown wood sides from HSN, and it has the same issue with it washing out on the left side only. WTH? This game LITERALLY just came out. No excuse for that Arcade 1Up. The screen also had a big ole scratch in the middle of the screen cover and I couldn't remove the stupid screwed down sticker film without removing all four screws to finish removing the sticker at the top of the play screen! Now it has the scratch and dust behind it since I had to remove it. This isn't cool. Still waiting on the black party cade which should be fine, but the special PM 4 game tabletop shouldn't be using those subpar screens. This is a new item. I wonder if there is a "version" that uses the better non messed up screen of it too. First time and possibly last I buy anything from Arcade Up. What the heck is wrong with them over there?
Unfortunately they cut a lot of corners in bringing the arcade experience home and they apparently have a lot of QC issues. Some of the larger cabinets have been really good like the Star Wars but others have not

THe problem is - they had to make a choice use the 4 way restrictor and have 7 of the games play properly or use an 8 way restrictor for xevious and mess up game play in the 7 other 4 way games ( ie. Pacman will not turn properly if you hit a diagonal ) - Since xevious can be played with the 4 way restrictor they made the correct choice and went with a 4 way gate instead of messing up the other 7 games ( They should have left xevious off and added another 4 way game unfortunately they tend to mix games on the list like this due to the license holders wanting certain games on the machines )
I agree with the last part of your comment... Xevious should never have been on the cabinet in the first and replaced with a different game
Be careful what you ask for. If they add an 8 way controller for the one obscure game you won't like how it interferes with the games that only require 4 way gate. I hate that about my multicade mame machine that I built when I try to play pacman style games.
I actually did replace it with an octagonal gate to see how much difference it makes and ODDLY I think I like the 8 way better than the 4 way. It shouldn't be that way but my scores have improved on Mappy and Dig Dug since the swap so I guess I'm content for now. Thanks for the comment

Nice review! How is Arcade1Up’s customer service? I bought a NBA Jam countercade on Black Friday and I’m a little disappointed that nowhere in the advertising does it clarify that the NBA roster is incomplete. And it’s not just incomplete - dozens of players are opted out of it most notably Reggie Miller. This is the equivalent of going to see your favorite band but finding out it is only a few members in their old age making a quick buck. The countercade is arriving tomorrow and I don’t think it’s worth returning at $80. Not sure if customer service would offer anything for the misleading advertising. I just got into these arcades and I’m learning from you and Rexxer all the issues that they’re having. What a complete mess…
Customer service is probably better than it used to be but you won't really have a case with the roster issue unfortunately. NFL Blitz is the same way, with all the stuff missing it's just not the same game

Great Video Pat! Ashame about Zevious. Pretty dumb on their part! Mods looks great. Defective screen is a deal breaker for sure. But that could happen on any unit. Sucks it happened to you. That is usually my kind of luck. I would try the community on getting a new one since you already have the unit up to snuff!

No, but the newer version does have dipswitch settings so it's possible the current one being sold does. Also the screen is better on the newer version. Hope that helps. I don't know exactly every dipswitch setting though so I don't want to say for sure

You have no problems changing out the buttons for real Happ, getting custom parts and graphics, but changing the restrictor plate on a joystick is insurmountable? They probably went with a 4-way gate because the main titles use a 4-way or 2-way gate in the real machines. Xevious is the only title that has an 8-way stick. The Pac-Man games and Dig Dug are 4-way, Galaxian and Galaga are 2-way. If you want an 8-way restrictor put one in there, but it's going to make the Pac-Man games a not so great experience. If anything the issue isn't the stick, it's correct for the bulk of the games, the problem is the inclusion of Xevious in a cab that has a 4-way stick as it should for the headline titles. Also the issues you mention with the screen, you're pretty far off axis when the color washes out. It's not a left/right issue, it's an up/down issue because that is a monitor turned 90-degrees from the intended orientation. They're not designed for someone to look up ah them from underneath when oriented horizontally, which is why you're seeing that from one side and not the other. It should still be fine for straight on viewing, and at the end of your review your camera is off to the left and the screen looks fine.

I hope to have a video out within the week that explains it better since a lot of the videos on UA-cam don't do a very good job explaining it. It's not hard and it's inexpensive. That control panel comes off easily when the two screws on each side are removed. Then you can upgrade the joystick spring, as well as the buttons but again I hope explain it in a video this week sometime

@@show-me-retro - That issue is the TN panel monitor they use -- They are made with poor viewing angles since they are designed for horizontal mounting and sitting on a desk ( ie. computer monitors) so you normally do not have them sitting above/below eye level and the color shifting is not an issue - but when you instead place them vertically it means poor viewing angles on the left/right sides instead of top/bottom which means you have to stay directly in front of the machine. A replacement is going to have the same issue since it will still be using the same TN panel ( for this type of usage they should be using an IPS panel but that adds cost to the units )

@@show-me-retro - The BOE monitor may be an IPS panel instead of TN - Here is an article on the difference between the 2 types ( www.trustedreviews.com/news/ips-vs-tn-vs-va-gaming-performance-colour-explained-2948955 ) - IIRC A1U changed to the BOE panels after complaints about the first gen monitors - so they probably went to an IPS panel as in the Qty they are ordering the price difference is probably negligible and they were probably able to negotiate a better deal for them since they then also had a better idea of how many units they would be ordering ( the newer 3/4 cabs also use the BOE monitors)

Usually folks get upset about high scores not saving so I seriously doubt it's possible to reset but I could be wrong
How hard is it to switch the buttons and the joy stick?
As far as the buttons, I'm hoping to upload a video soon which is a little easier to follow than some other channels. The stick i swapped the 1lb spring for a 4lb. There are lots of videos on that swap. To access the control panel remove the two screws on each side of the panel and unplug the ribbon cable and sound cable and it will become free. You mean add more games or get to the main menu? Holding down player 1 for 5 seconds gets you back to the main menu. Adding a Pi would give you more games butvi haven't done that yet
My Namco plug-and-play has the same games as that. I paid $0.50 for it in the thrift store.

There's no reason why even at $200 they couldn't put better sticks and buttons in these cabinets. These are inexpensive items and even an led strip behind the marquee would cost basically nothing. I don't think it's too much to ask but I appreciate your opinion

If you're not a fan of A1up why are you watching the video?
This will sound rude, but IDC. A bit incredulous that you would be doing these kinds of reviews, yet wouldn't understand the nature of 4-way and 8-way joysticks / restrictors. A 4-way joystick on a Pac-Man machine is not a "problem", it's a necessity. But I definitely don't know why they would subsequently include Xevious or any 8-way game ON the cabinet, other than laziness / money saving on licensing. Yeah, I guess that sucks, but almost any enthusiast (apparently not you, though) would rather just keep the proper 4-way control on Pac-Man and the others, vs. caring about the diagonal movement in Xevious.
And to the causal player who still may not understand what I'm saying, since they grew up with analog gamepads and similar - more is absolutely not better when it comes to arcade games. It's not "8 ways > 4 ways, what were they thinking?" It's, 8-way control in Pac-Man and others will literally screw up your ability to properly control the game, and cause the Pac-Man to hiccup / not obey you / screw up, because the original game was designed to have 4-way only.

Yes, all of them. My nephew got it for Christmas and the screen is great, the controls were surprisingly good and it had an options menu with adjustable difficulty etc. Very much improved
