This scene is so memorable and impactful. I am moved every time I watch. Vali Kerekes performance here is absolutely fantastic. This scene blows me away.
This film, Damnation, is my favorite by Bela Tarr. And this particular scene and the soothing, peaceful music was so so moving for me. Every time I listen to this, it just makes me calm in a strangely spiritual way. And there are so many similar scenes in this film. Bela Tarr is one of the greatest spiritual giants of world cinema.
So this scene is the introduction of the singer’s character if I’m not mistaken. The camera pans lazily through the bar, passing its way through multiple people that upon first viewing, look like the focus of the scene, only to switch to different extras before finally landing on the girl. These people, their bodies are different but perhaps their pure consciousness is the same as our pure consciousness. You could be the light behind anybody’s eye. Each “unimportant“ side person in every story is just as significant as the main character.
This is incredible! The fact that this song and Vali Kerekes is not known in the United States is so sad. I came about it while watching Bela Tarr's amazingly beautiful, haunting (and very depressing) masterpiece Damnation. The sax solo in the end seals it.
i've found this movie being depressed, lonely and about to kill myself, this song made me cry, even in darkest moments there are things capable of being seen as beautiful. i love his works since, my favourite director he is
