Loch fly fishing for sea trout from a boat | late season 2022

  • Finally got round to putting a video together (I use the term loosely!) from the footage I had from some sea trout fishing I did afloat, last season. The footage is mostly from my first visit, but I did go again, later in the season and had a similar day in terms of numbers of fish, just that they were mainly smaller in the 6-10 inch range - but nice, bright finnock. The final fish in the video is the best one I landed that second day.
'd never fished a loch for sea trout, but just fished standard loch style tactics, similar to how I would with for wild brown trout. I used my usual sink tip line, that was most effective, fishing a two fly cast. I also had a full floating line set up as well. The latter trip I fished slightly heavier set ups with bigger flies in case there were any salmon about. But as with many of the systems up here, salmon can be pretty thin on the ground, unfortunately. I got lucky both days, as on another occasion it would be highly likely there would be no sea trout about, either.
I Anyway, it's a longer video than maybe ideal, and sorry about all the wind noise, so if you did take time to watch all of it or part of it, thank you and I hope you enjoyed it.
    TACKLE
5 wt rod, ghost tip fly line, shortened, tapered leader to a riverge ring with a two fly cast below. Best flies on both trips were a Doobry, Kate McLaren, Mallard & Claret and a Morning Glory

Really enjoy your videos and hope you get the soundtrack better. Well done on a terrific catch of seatrout.

Many thanks Angus. Yes, I find the audio side of things quite tricky, I’m trying to figure out affordable ways to improve it though I’m usually just wanting to get out fishing and share some of the trips with those that might be interested, but I’m working on it. Really appreciate the comment and glad you are enjoying the videos, thank you and all the best for 2023.

Epic fishing in paradise! difficult to imagine that there is still sea trout loch fishing of this quality around, after all the doom and gloom over west coast sea trout stocks since the expansion of inshore salmon farming.
This looks like how I imagine Loch Maree, Stack, Hope etc to have been fishing in their heyday of the 1960s. Very, very well angled!! Just a thought, have you considered doing the introductions, endings and general talking bits on your phone? the sound quality is vastly better on mine than on my headcam (its not an expensive phone, just a Samsung) and its featuring more and more for my vids.
The wind noise is ok, gets the wilderness vibe across! well done.☺

Cheers mate, yes I has two good days there last season, that first one has to be up there with one of my best ever I think. Yes, there’s plenty of room for optimism all the while needing to keep the pressure on with things like fish farming impact etc. I may have got lucky, certainly the annual returns we received in terms of migratory fish weren’t great. In years gone by, the sea trout fishing was famous on these lochs. Not sure how salmon numbers are but my guess is not many. I got a second camera with a plug in mic same make and about £60 😄 see how that goes, I may use my iphone if i can ever free up the memory/storage on it. I also have a wireless mic my old man gave me that has an app so might try that. I need to plan a bit more but then again I usually just want to get fishing and am a bit lazy with the whole recording process but hopefully it’ll improve slowly. All the best 👍
