Thankfully, there are actually even different interpretations and even a few different translations of this verse instead of the mainstream understanding. Why don't we move ahead with the times?
Move ahead ?! Do you mean to have "new" interpretations and change islam based on human whims and desires like other people did ? Why would you want that when you can leave islam and then do what you please ? Allah's religion is preserved and there always will be reformists such as this guy who will try to change it and fail. If you had assessed the concepts he is propagating that would be fair game, however, that would require you to actually have some relevant knowledge. However, you don't do anything except attack Professor Abou el-Fadl because he describes aspects of Islam different to your deficient understanding. In actual fact, he is describing the scholarly position relevant to our experience today, particularly here in the West. It appears this clashes with your fossilised version of Islam stemming from the past, propagated to you by old men living in the autocratic Muslim-majority countries, so hardly relevant.
