I was just telling my partner last night about how haunted houses didn’t really scare kids from NYC because we’ve never been in big houses. It was stories like Candyman that really got me.
Tale Foundry did an episode on domestic horror. It fits pretty well with the "human haunting the house" category, since the whole point is that the horror stays behind closed doors. In one story, there are no ghosts at all, but two girls who haunt the burned-out skeleton of their house. Domestic horror is one I rarely see, but it's one of the most quietly unsettling forms of horror I've ever seen.
I find domestic horror fascinating because it goes against the classic "fear of the unknown" horror genres, while at the same being very relatable. Home is the one place where you should feel safe, but that's not the case for many people due to abuse, domestic violence, addiction, gaslighting and more. Domestic horror isn't thrilling like a slasher or a sci-fi monster story, it's suffocating and seemingly inescapable.
I literally JUST finished writing an essay for my ENG 100 class on The Haunting of Hill House- specifically on the relationship between Eleanor and the House, so this is PERFECT timing :,) I've been slowly working my way through House of Leaves and have been loving every second thus far.
"White is for witching" by Helen Oyeyemi is a very compelling take on the haunted house, the house is more or less the storyteller and its effing creepy at times. Feels raw and ancient but also very personal. Book is quite short and full of soft magic. Definitely recommend it.
The Haunting of Hill house and Haunting of Bly Manor are SO interesting when they discuss the relationship between the ghosts, time, and even the house(s) itself. I love the quote from Mike Flannigan about Bly Manor where he said they wanted to portray the ghosts as having a 'dementia of the spirit'. Such an interesting and horrifying idea.
I think, as much as I do have a fascination for haunted houses, due to my lack of experiencing any hauntings, I've always preferred haunted persons. Or rather, the idea of one. And not in the possession sort of way, stereotypical or otherwise, but in the sense that I think there can be people so dark, so evil, that they act as a sort of fly trap (or a magnet?) for evil entities. I don't believe in the supernatural, but I'm certain the only way I could ever believe in it would either be to intentionally do stuff you're not supposed to do in horror movies just out of curiosity, or to encounter someone who is evil enough that they pull in ghosts, spirits, poltergeists, demons, and possibly more; and then inadvertently loose them upon me. Which, knowing me, would probably be fun. Or at least more interesting than my regular day to day life.
As someone who also doesnt believe in ghosts, i like the idea of a house itself being haunted much more than a haunted house. A ghost is an intruder, something that can be banished or you could just leave for a bit. But when your home, the thing you thought was safe, was something that was supposed to protect you turns against you? Thats scary. You cant get rid of that, its like finding out a loved one hates you. Theres no repairing that betrayal
I like to think of ghosts as memories of a place. The same way you recall a random event from your past, they echo the random memories of a house, sometimes emotional, other times mundane.
There’s another kind of “living person haunting the house” scenario: someone else is living in your house without your knowledge. Yes this really happens sometimes, and it’s as nightmarish as it sounds
Burnt Offerings is another great example of the house itself being haunted. Also the idea of a home being haunted by a living person brings to mind when folks have found out someone was living in their attic or walls and coming out at night to eat their food, etc.
Anatomy is probably my favourite horror game ever, I've read and watched so much stuff about it and the whole game really felt haunted. Also house of leaves Wooooo!!!
The part about houses being haunted by people was so well done ;-; I got broken up with recently and it describes exactly how I feel, and the haunting by parents is very real. Congrats on this video, definitely one of my favourite ones you've done 😊
If this is just showing up in your feed: Conner is an extremely effective, articulate writer and his delivery is expressive, well paced and and great for listening or watching. If you are looking for another go-to for video essays to add to your work playlist, subscribe!
16:30 I think a good example of media that explores this sort of ‘haunted by the living’ type of scenario is the Of Monsters and Men song *Little Talks*; which tells the story of someone who is living alone in an “old and empty house” haunted by the memories of someone they “watched disappear”, possibly to a deterioration of their mind like a form of dementia, or the relationship just died a slow death.
I've never been this early before! Your story at the beginning reminded me of something I experienced. My sister and I had our bedrooms connected by a doorframe without a door (It's something common in old colombian houses, and that house was Old). I'm the oldest sister, and I love my sister but sometimes I would prank her when we were young, she also loved paranormal videos and we would normally sleep together after watching ghosts videos and scary stories. One night, after watching a scary movie again, she said she wanted to sleep alone, and I joked about how sometimes in the night, I would hear a noise coming from her bedroom, a specific noise that was created by rubbing your hand on the wall, and so, I demonstrated doing it. Of course I made that up, and looking back, I feel bad that I was trying to scare her. I'm glad she says she doesn't remember. We went to bed and as she promised, she slept alone. I woke up around 4 in the morning, it wasn't unusual for me. I wasn't scared, my bedroom had a window facing the street so I always had some light, it wasn't pitch black. What was pitch black though, was my sister's bedroom, as it didn't have an outside window. I was trying to go back to sleep, when I heard something coming from her bedroom. I turned to look at the doorframe, and it took me a few seconds to realize that the noise, was the same noise I had made earlier, the rough wall noise. I didn't hear it again, but I kept repeating it in my head, asking myself what had just happened because I sure as hell was awake, was my sister awake? Was she trying to prank me? But I couldn't find the courage to say anything. I didn't see anything at all, but I think it was even worse. I stayed awake until 6am when my mother came to wake us up to get ready for school. It wasn't the only weird thing that happened in that house, but it was the only thing I didn't immediately tell my sister about. To this day almost ten years later I still don't know what it was, perhaps I don't want to know, but it was the end of my pranking and scaring my sister, I felt as though whatever it was, meant to give me a spoon of my own medicine. I felt insecure inside my own home for the almost 4 years we lived there. When we left the house, I also stopped having sleep paralysis.
you dropping that last line at the end had my eyes widen in alarm OcO i, like connor, don't really believe in supernatural things or the existence of ghosts, but i can't deny the existence of Spooky Shit. recently, books on the large wall bookshelf next to where i sit most of the day keep randomly falling over or shifting. they haven't been touched in years. if it had only happened once, i'd chalk it up to random settling; things do shift around over time, after all. but it keeps happening, and on different shelves, so it's not like one book falling toppled another. feeling like i'm in the movie Interstellar... i hope i'm not missing a vitally important message from a spacefaring time traveler!
I just remember as a kid this one house that was left vacant with signs that said 'haunted, you will die here. Stay away.' In the modern age that place would be swamped with weirdos.
Oh my gosh I saw A Ghost Story in theaters when it came out in 2017! It was so crazy and emotional. I kind of thought my friends and I were the only people who had seen it.
Anytime people talk about haunted houses, it reminds me of when my father gave me the task to check an empty building weekly. At first I was a bit fearful of the task because of the responsibilities and of the ambience, but then I gradually got used to it and started to enjoy the place. However I then became more anxious when people had to check the place with me, especially large crowds because I had the fear that I could've left somebody in there. However it never really gave me the idea of a place that could've been haunted, it was a relatively recent building. Maybe the only king of ghost to haunt it would've been one of a pigeon, since I found a couple of pigeon skeleton in there
Great video! The definition of ghosts as a mindless echo of people is essentially how my favourite author Tim Powers always portrays them and I've always liked it
I feel like you would love the works of John Darnielle if you don’t already! His most recent book, Devil House, is a fascinatingly complex tale of a building haunted by the history of the crimes that occurred there-not to mention his band, the Mountain Goats, excels in storytelling about places haunted by people (The House that Dripped Blood, The Young Thousands, Lakeside View Apartments Suite, to name a few).
"Hell House" by Richard Matheson is an interesting take on this notion of agreeing there is a haunting, but not knowing what it is. One character is a spiritualist who fully believes in the spirit trying to move on which contrasts with the paraphysicist who believes in 'ghosts' like you say with mindless kinetic energy residue. Matheson handles this really well with compelling and intelligent characters all while in a very interesting and quite scary haunted house. And there's a great payoff too. I highly recommend it if you're into this stuff.
I'm only halfway through bit this is really interesting! I'll definitely check these recommendations out! Listening to this while eating lunch alone in the woods was a fun choice!
That introductory story reminded me of similar things happening to me...turns out it was a hypnopompic hallucination and I have a sleep disorder. But until my diagnosis I spent years wondering how I may have misremembered it, despite it leaving such an intense impression on me.
The video's cool, but it reminded me of things my family or I have experienced. 1. So many years ago after something happened, my aunt asked my mom and I to check the house. We just walked through, we could see small blood spatters on the wall, maybe on their couch or floor but it wasn't like a messy crime scene. As I walked through their living room, I stopped and looked at the hallway. It didn't feel right, it just felt like something dark was in there. I told my mom, she told my aunt and we went home. 2. This was a few years ago and I was asleep when this happened but my mom told me when we drove somewhere. My brother was staying up late playing his PlayStation in the living room when our living was arranged in a certain way. Sometime during the night while he was gaming, he just looked towards the kitchen and saw a black shadowy figure. He then started shouting stuff like 'get out, leave' and the figure turned and walked away, disappearing behind the fridge. 3. This happened like a month or two ago, my aunt had asked me to feed my uncles cats since he was at dialysis. I walked over, had some trouble with the door, got it open and walked through the living room. Halfway through the living room, i heard someone/something whisper my name. I got freaked out, turned around and felt like crying. I went to fill the cat's water bowl and i called my friend to tell him what happened, i walked through the trailer, filled the food bowl, and stayed outside with the cat before walking home.
Human haunting exist in two more examples. - Human live in your house attic. It's scary, when you have secret roommate for years. Very scary stories is from Japan about this. - Human stalking your house. The story of watcher from America and young bloods.
For anyone interested in the ancient history of hauntings, I highly recommend The First Ghosts by Irving Finkel. It's an absolutely fascinating book about ghosts in the everyday life of ancient Mesopotamians.
Just a little fun fact I learned while going to ~Catholic school~ but exorcisms actually happen pretty frequently in Catholicism. Every baptism actually involves a mini exorcism! Definitely not the same as we see in movies, but it is just a part of the baptism ritual. Thought that was cool!
I do not believe in ghosts but I have a "haunted" item. It is a very old TV that in a dream exploded catch on fire and the whole of the outside was on fire, all the houses ablaze then so was mine and I ran out of it and then my dad said nothing was wrong... then nothing was. The TV did break and we got a new one... then the TV was back. My mom who was asleep remembers it braking and me running out and my dad stopping me. My dad remembers none of that and says the TV never broke and knows objectively false (Proven in photos) things about the TV. It is very strange.
My dad is also just… a lot. He is not so much a bad person but, he was not a dad. Yeah he does function like a haunting. My brother and I both stay at our place for the holidays.
when i saw that you uploaded in my little recommended, i sang, outloud, “country boy i loooooove you.” did the voice and everything. this wasn’t something i chose to do, it was like an involuntary response my body made. do with that what you will 🤷♀️

I loved the concept of Hill House's red room as being its 'stomach'. The idea of a house digesting your psyche is so interesting to me

Yeah, I missed it- luckily my editor included some footage to back up the point!
New Connor McGrath right when I need something to listen to? Heck yeah.

@spookymcg it was super clear! Honestly one of the best explanations I've heard for it :)

It's the not knowing, or the not trusting that's so strange. Rationalization goes a long way, but sometimes not ALL the way...

Excited to see where this video was going to go based on the title. More than pleasantly surprised. Good work
"When I was 11 and still living with my parents..." Yeah, not like those other 11 year olds getting jobs and heading off to college.
