There are old Chinese men in some cafes not far from where I live who play this and drink coffee all day. What I find very interesting about this Chess, is how socially it is played in a casual environment. They actively cheer their favored side, and when one of the player's makes a move, he slides a piece to its position, then smacks it on the surface to make a loud sound. Very cool.
+kuchingtan not exactly in the case of Chinese chess. People in China barely use chess to gamble. Instead, I not sure if you know, MaJiang is the one that is used to gamble more likely. Majiang is Chinese counterpart of poker. Chinese chess is the counterpart of Western Chess.
i guess im asking randomly but does someone know a method to get back into an instagram account..? I was dumb forgot the account password. I appreciate any tips you can offer me.
Nice overview of sets. Personally, I like the sets with the double-sided pieces (Chinese characters on one side, "universal" symbols on the other) for learning the game.
That's a good thing to know for general strategy. I'm really just showing the sets here, and my other videos just tell the rules. Sorry, I don't get into strategic considerations in my videos -- but there are many such videos to be found. I hope you enjoy looking these great xiangqi sets!
I noticed that at the Chinese bakery and in Chinatown here in San Francisco the old Chinese men like using those old large wooden pieces. Thank you for the videos, Ricks. They stay very relevant even now more than a decade later.
Hi rick, great sets you have there. I was just wondering, are there any official standard sizes for the board and the pieces? Like a standard for Xiangqi World Federation or something?
The Cambaluc set is available from any retail store which can order it from Alliance Distributors, which distributes the set for the Elephant Chess Club
Your flashback is knocking Chinese chessmen around -- or some other type? The slapping of pieces on the board and on each other is certainly characteristic of Chinese chess play
Nice to find a "white man" playing xiang qi. I collect some sets too including about half of yours. Want to tell you that there are sets that look like round mahjong tiles and also some sort of white stones. Another one of my favourites is a black set with letterings in red and green, all selling for under USD3 here in Kuching, Malaysia. Thanks for sharing.
I don't actually know what the official parameters are for the sizes of sets. My impression, from what I've dealt with, is that the sets with 1 1/2 to 2 inch pieces, or perhaps 4 to 5 cm would be a typical serious player's set -- but I'm just judging from my own experience. Any other viewers out there know more about this?....
Waw, really nice collection ! Some beautiful pieces. I wish I knew some people to learn and play with. Already not much to play regular chess so shogi or xiangqi.. ^^
A really good place to play variants is pychess-variants.herokuapp.com/ If you have trouble getting started, you can join in the chat and ask other players how to use it. There's also a new Chinese Chess web site getting going, where you can play, xiangqi.com. That one will be developing much more in the next few months
Yes, those sets are great ... and I haven't been able to find them. My supplier in China mostly sells within China, so they do not have much "international" material. Let me know if you find a supplier for that kind.
Hey Rick, it is me, Cha. You have seen and replied on my comment in your Chess Childhood video. I just thought it would be nice to visit you once in a while so.... uh, yeah. That is all for now!! Bye.
I have one request for a video that I can't seem to find anywhere on UA-cam. I'd love to see a video on Chinese chess notation as there are plenty on western chess but nothing for Chinese chess or Shogi.
Hey Eric, thanks for the suggestion. The Chinese notation really is fascinatingly different from the one we use, and rather ingenius in the way it describes the moves of different pieces. I'd love to do a video on that ... but I'm so far behind in my video-making! I'll keep that in mind...
Hi! Really good explanation. I have the golden table from xiangqi but I lost some pieces and I would like to ask you where did you buy this? Kind regards c:
Thanks for your message. I get these in wholesale quantities from a company in China. I sell sets retail, through my web site ancientchess.com. You can also contact me through that website, with your specific thoughts or requests. I'm always glad to hear from you
Just wanting to share. I don't see the mahjong tile type set which I really like. There are also sets made from white stones (USD1.50). Prefer lighter colour pieces to the dark background. another difference. Your sets come in wooden boxes but here in Asia, we get ours in paper boxes! The last one is really nice for reviewing games and analysing. Wish I have one!
spam? I don't know what's up with the spam detectors, sorry for the trouble and thanks for getting through with this comment. If you send a comment about the specific set you're looking at, or send an email of what you're looking at, I can probably help. I made the video a while ago and have some different sets now.
Thanks for asking. The only place I know to get these ancient "seal" script sets is my site: AncientChess . com (rickofricks on eBay). Please note that I have a video and free downloadable booklet about how to play this game (see my other videos or go to my web site). Thanks! Rick
I am sorry, I do not read Chinese. Google gives me this translation: "UP main chess games will be?" Do you mean to ask me what my favorite kind of chess is? 你想问我最喜欢的国际象棋游戏是什么吗?
Oh, you got that little gem? Very nice! I've got many new sets just listed, very good for playing (nothing small like that special agate set)... www.ebay.com/sch/rickofricks/m.html?_nkw=xiangqi
I ... can't ... stop .... getting ... more ... chess ... sets ... somebody ... help ... me ...getting ... more ... more ... getting ... more ... chess ... sets.......
Hi Ancient Chess, really nice sets you have there. The ancient "seal" script is rare (Shang Dynasty writing). As to standard tournament usage, Chinese use the big yellow plastic pieces in the 70s and 80s. These days, poor Asian countries use cheap lower quality sets and it seems side does not matter anymore.
+kuchingtan Thanks for the informative comments. It's very interesting to hear what sort of sets people are using nowadays in China and different parts of the world. I am curious about the sets made from white stones -- I don't know if I have seen those
HI, send the photo of the "white stone" to your facebook page- message. Enjoy your chess sets videos. Like your Zagreb 59 set (Mine has a Reyjavik rook!) but like smaller more practical (the old USSR sets on UA-cam makes me salivate) sets for playing through games in books.
+kuchingtan Thanks! I haven't yet located your message with the photo, though I've been trying. I'm finding Facebook extremely hard to navigate this morning ... for some reason I have 3 different pages and the controls keep changing. Anyway, I expect to stumble upon it soon! Have you looked into the Dubrovnik sets? I wonder if they are in line with what you like about the 'Zagreb' sets. There's an amazing web page about those (not mine) at www.bestchessmenever.com/blog/files/the-dubrovnik-chess-set.html
Thanks Vic! I translate with help of Google -- Some people say that each piece being a Chinese character is not convenient for foreigners to remember. You can translate the words on each piece, for example, "将" translates to General, "士" translates to Counselor, "象" translates to bodyguard, "象" translates to cavalry, "车" translates to Chariot, "兵,卒" translates to infantry, "炮" translates to artillery. Maybe this translation is easier for foreigners to learn and remember.
+TrashCan4You The 2nd and 3rd one are still sold in a shop here in Kuching, Sarawak. For the second one, the older version I own from 2005 is made of lighter colour wood and that makes a better contrast to dark moody looking wooden sets.
Alaya Drazini .....ok.but,I live on France,it s not possible that I Come...😕😕😕really,you have good sets, beautyfull boards game!!!its différent in France, not too much shops .... thanks and bye....🙏
Thanks for the message! If you want to go into business selling xiangqi to the 'white man' (me), contact me on my web site, AncientChess com . The prices here are much higher.

Mostly there's money involved. Gambling, that's Chinese culture!

Oh man, when I thought I was over collecting too many chess sets, now I have to collect Xiangqi sets too!!!!!!!!
Yeah, sorry about that, but you really must have Chinese chess ... many, many sets! It's great to have them -- I promise! :)
Interesting seeing a Stauton style Xiangxi set.
Nice overview of sets. Personally, I like the sets with the double-sided pieces (Chinese characters on one side, "universal" symbols on the other) for learning the game.
The first one is really neat, both Go and Chinese Chess on the same board.
That's a good thing to know for general strategy. I'm really just showing the sets here, and my other videos just tell the rules. Sorry, I don't get into strategic considerations in my videos -- but there are many such videos to be found. I hope you enjoy looking these great xiangqi sets!
I just saw a GREAT instructive video showing some opening principles. Highly recommended

I just got a really nice one with acrylic pieces from Yellow Mountain Imports. In fact I think it’s the same one you’re holding at 2:34

ugh the sound of the chess pieces knocking on the board or on each other make me have a lot of nostalgia flash back to my childhood

When I was a kid watching this video, I laughed a lot at that part.

do you have the last set in the bigger size?? I looking to buy one. Let me know please
Yes, the two great Chinese board games. What more could you need? When you get tired of one, you play the other ... it would never end
Waw, really nice collection ! Some beautiful pieces. I wish I knew some people to learn and play with. Already not much to play regular chess so shogi or xiangqi.. ^^

Hi, AncientChess, I am interested in Xiangqi and I've got the stereoscopic set.
Yes, those sets are great ... and I haven't been able to find them. My supplier in China mostly sells within China, so they do not have much "international" material. Let me know if you find a supplier for that kind.
I'm really interested in the peg board that is for Go as well, do you sell them? I want a really nice wooden board for 4cm pieces... Thanks
Due to the fact that I was addicted to Xiangqi, I also have a collection of Xiangqi sets too.
Great! Maybe some day I will see yours as well 😃

Thanks for the question. Sorry, the only sets I have now can be found at buychinesechess.com. I don't have the really large rosewood now.

Thanks for the good comment. I have a web site for selling xiangqi ... buychinesechess.com/
I have one exactly the same as the one in 8:35. Bought that in Vietnam.

Yes, seen the web page. Can't find a replica to buy from India. The photo is in the message. Happy hunting.
Hi, ancient chess. I post a photo of a book with the stamp R J Fischer on your facebook "Ancient chess"page. Need your advice.
Thanks Vic! I translate with help of Google --
