We had a rat infestation for nearly two years and it lasted that long because my dad thought we could “handle” it. I would hear them fighting in the wall and one killed another one and left its corpse on the stairway. One even bit me as I tried to dispose of it and I went to emergency care in case I got a disease (I did not.) Eventually my dad caved and shelled out for an exterminator, and we later learned the whole neighborhood was infested due to the city building a piping system that pushed them all our way.
And the worst part is after we got them all we had a fly infestation afterwards.
