A History of "Lift Every Voice and Sing"

  • Written in 1900 as a prayer of thanksgiving and freedom, "Lift Every Voice and Sing" is sometimes referred to as the "Black National Anthem" -- but it is also seen by many as a universal cry of all who struggle.
    This Juneteenth, we offer a history of the classic hymn -- pairing a performance by Baylor University students & alumni with "pop-up video"-style text sharing its story:
