    the thing you said near the end abt american audiences reducing ghibli movies to just being "aesthetic" despite a lot of them having anti war messages is so true. theres a reason why the ghiblicore girlies never talk about grave of the fireflies

    I'm so blown away, Nat. Ghibli has always held a special place in my heart, growing up but especially more so now. I've had the opportunity to watch several Ghibli movies with my partner of which they have NEVER seen and the whimsical and yet powerful emotions it gives to even a fully grown adult are not to be underestimated. 🍄🌲🌱 Special shout out to My Neighbor Totoro and Ponyo which are the two most recent films I've shown them. And of course, absolutely spectacular build as always Noot 💚

    i get what you mean about how primarily english speaking/western audiences perceive ghibli movies!! like you said lots of audiences respond the most to the atmosphere probably because that's their entryway to engaging with the movie with the lowest barrier due to cultural differences, but when it's the ONLY thing people respond to it feels a bit ... off? because even though yeah no one has to watch every ghibli movie and have a dissertation length paper to say about themes/implications/etc. afterwards, it does feel a bit short-sighted when the only way lots of people will willingly engage with foreign content is superficially based only looks/vibes/the popularized "asian" or otherwise foreign aesthetics as if hayao miyazaki and his team only made them with the impression they would give, and not the story he was telling via the medium.
    i don't think it's wrong to enjoy the animation purely on its own visual merits (bc the ghibli team does work with incredible care in making them!), but because the actual stories can be dismissed or overlooked a lot by english speaking/western audiences in favor of just the *vibes* it's hard for me personally to not be a little put off by the disparity of appreciation when we already live in a world that commodifies outward appearances (a la cultural appropriation and other stuff that happens adjacent). idk!! i also can't ignore that on some level ghibli movies WERE made with an intended broad audience appeal, so it's not a surprise that people engage with it the way that they do, i think it's just that We Live In A Society 🤪
    dnjakdkjnsjkn and great build!!! i've loved keeping up w/ ur vids these past couple of months, so thank you for putting them out here!!

    UGH this whole build, the commentary, everything is so perfect 😭 im hoping to build a mystical gyroid forest on my own fairycore island someday and this is just SUCH inspo/goals.
    also, i feel you on the whole ghibli thing - like ghibli films are absolutely stunningly beautiful, and they do have really amazing vibes that sort of transport you to this other world for a little while. but theyre also sooo much more than just an aesthetic film, like the way that they deal with such deep and heavy topics like war, deforestation, industrialization, and growing up but they do so in such a simple and heartfelt way is so magical. like, watching howl slowly transform into a gnarled bird monster over the course of the war hits just as hard as seeing a film with a soldier on an exploding battlefield, but without a lot of the obviously triggering and overwheling elements. like ugh what a beautiful and artistic representation of ptsd and trauma from war. so many films/tv series (esp american ones) focus so hard on shock value/gore/trauma to force a response out of you, but ghibli films do it just so subtly and effortlessly, and in a way that really sticks with you without forcing a trauma response, you know?? idk if this makes sense my period hormone brain is going brrr but anways YES i love the build, love the deep thoughts, 20/10 build would noot again 💖

    Very good build! I can understand the frustration of building in this game and it's doesn't come out like you want it in your head. But it's worth it when you finish. I enjoy Ghibli movies also. My favorites are Porco Rosso, Spirited Away, Princess Monoke, among others. One of the Gyroids do look like the one of those Spirits in Monoke so it's perfect.

    ur point abt people not critically interacting with foreign films is valid!!! i think a lot of it has to do with orientalism and also the whole “place: ☹️. place, japan: 😍” kind of stereotype. but i digress. beautiful build!!!

    growing up i always wanted to fly because of kiki's delivery service, i would chronically have dreams of flying, would try to manifest it jumping on trampolines and off of the porch LMAO and now it's a movie i turn to because i remember believing in that magic so much that it swelled in my throat. that magic is still there but now i appreciate it when i'm feeling low because it is very much a muse based film. it reminds me to go back to my roots, reconnect with people, forgive myself, and try again when the time's right. YES i'm getting emotional typing this out >: (
    so yeah, kiki's. and when marnie was there always makes me sob like a baby. it hits weirdly close

    • @noot98
      @noot98  2 роки тому

      LISTEN OK i can't watch kiki's delivery service sometimes because it hurts so much 😭. like when you're in a creative slump and you're just floating through life, sometimes it hits right and sometimes it hits WRONG and I make myself upset 😂. I feel you on when marnie was there too (though that movie also feels me with a seething rage deep in my core)
