Sound and Music - In the Making (for young composers and music creators)

In the Making is our annual trailblazing artist development programme for young people aged 14-18. It is the only programme of its kind in the UK that supports young music creators and composers.
This 12-month programme supports 50 young people to grow their confidence and expand their skills and creative ambition in an open and accessible environment.
In the Making welcomes anyone interested in working with music and sound, offering a diverse range of opportunities. These include an annual week-long residential, online skills sessions, bespoke creative composing tasks, and networking opportunities.
Participants will develop their artistic portfolios, receiving recordings of their music performed by professional musicians to support future career progression. Additionally, they will gain insight and expertise from the composers on our In Motion programme.
Residency Phase (July to August)
During the Residency Phase, students take part in a residential programme with 50 other young composers. Each participant is assigned a tutor and a group of expert musicians who work collaboratively to bring their ideas to life. The residential takes place at the University of Huddersfield.
By the end of the course, participants will have created a new piece of music, which will be performed and professionally recorded. This recording can be used for applications, as part of an artistic portfolio, or shared on social media platforms. Our team also provides guidance on future study opportunities, getting music heard, and building a career as a composer.
Development Phase (September to June)
The Development Phase includes a series of online skills sessions led by composers and industry experts from diverse backgrounds and genres, along with bespoke composing tasks. These sessions support students in exploring new skills while working with peers and friends met during the residential.
Sound and Music is a National Youth Music Organisation and In the Making is made possible with the generous support of Arts Council England, Steinberg, The Three Monkies Trust, The Britford Bridge Trust, and The Sampimon Trust.
Our bursary scheme is supported by many generous donors each year, including Faber Music who will continue to provide financial support for composers in 2025.
