The ending is beautiful. Cell is trying to use Gohan's humanity and wish to defend other living beings as a weakness against Gohan, but this backfires on him: Cell puts Gohan's back against the wall, and the people Gohan is defending solidifies his will power and gives him absolutely no option to back down - in a sense, putting Gohan on Sun Tzu's death ground. Because of Gohan's humanity and unwavering will to defend those he loves, he is able to reach deeper and concentrate his power, defeating Cell.
