  • Welcome back to the second part of this renovation adventure as we try to convert a chicken coop into a one-bedroom rental property on a farm in Tuscany, Italy. This episode we take onboard all your ideas about the design and layout of the lounge room and kitchen to make the most of the incredible Italian weather and countryside views. You can find many more videos on my channel about how I learned Italian and moved to Italy. Making these episodes alone is very time consuming and expensive and if you would like to support my work, you can find my Patreon page here:

When I rented a villa in Tuscany with 8 friends, we had a huge communal kitchen. We cooked in it almost every day, whether it was a leisurely breakfast or a huge dinner after a day of touristing. I know it's different for everyone, but those memories of spaghetti puttanesca, morning espresso, eating tomatoes like apples...I will never forget them. That could be a neat way to market the rental, too, Kylie; for foodies. They could get a basket of produce from the farm, you could teach cooking classes if you wanted to...*buying my ticket now* 😉

We turned our lives upside down and renovated a guesthouse by the beach in Mexico (Yucatan). The TV was a huge discussion because everyone said the nationals love to watch their TV, their sports etc. But as part of our concept we ended up deciding against televisions. It’s been successful and even had this married couple who commented negatively at the time of arrival but when they left had completely changed their opinion, saying that they dont remember when they last had so much conversation and playing games together (they brought some games but rarely ever used them cause the TV always won). But I realize that wont be everyone.... I’d estimate 90% of our guest enjoy the TV free rooms.
Kitchen wise (we used to run a Design&Build studio with kitchens being one of our main things, so we love a good kitchen ;-) so naturally I think there should be one - and I agree with it by the window (or better under it), that spot is kinda calling for it. Specially when you are far from any restaurants... we took all our kitchenettes out in our guesthouse because we are close to restaurants and then suffered a bit of a backlash due to people really wanting breakfast without having to leave the property in the mornings (seems to be more important than dinner). We noticed the kitchen/cooking or at least serving some food depends greatly on the nationality, age group and lifestyle of a guest. Even if they just end up storing some (ready) food in the fridge or making coffee in the morning.
We now are planning on building a small restaurant/snack bar to be able to supply food.....COVID put that plan on hold for a while.
Personal note: Love your video, it feels natural and not over-done, has a nice ‘down to earth’ feel to it, made by folks that are not only passionate but also have a great grasp on things and valuable experience to share.

Whenever we go on vacation, be it Italy or France or Spain etc. we rent a flat or house, because we like cooking. Going to the market together, deciding on what to eat and cook it together is a major part of our relaxation. On a three weeks vacation we eat out maybe twice. We chose houses that have lovely outside spaces where you like to eat a market-fresh salad at lunch in the shade and grill a beautiful piece of meat or fish in the evening. Even in Venice we went to the market and cooked...and we had to buy a decent frying pan on top of it. All I want to say is, that people come in all kinds of “colours”.

    • @KylieFlavell
      @KylieFlavell  3 роки тому +9

Yes!!! This sounds like my family.😍 Of course I completely understand some people want to relax in other ways but at least with a good kitchen, both types have the option to choose.

I too agree with you UsernamesFordummies. My work is partly in Venice so I like to have an apartment there and shop at the Rialto market. Over the years I've found that I prefer to rent an apartment there as one can feel very tired walking over all those bridges during the day and the chance to rest in the evening can be very appealing. :)

I once brought an Irish artist friend to the place I grew up in Tuscany, not far from where Kylie and Guido are and he said, walking down a white road amidst olive trees and stopping in front of one with a couple of scarlet poppy flowers at its feet: you see this, this is a painting in itself!
I would have never noticed that if he hadn't pointed out.
We Italians are too used to beauty and don't notice many things about it, but I have to say, after 16 years in Dublin I cannot live in a grey city anymore, for as much as I've loved the city life, my soul is screaming for the Tuscan countryside!
Kyle, I will get in touch when I'm back, so you can practice your English with me, otherwise you forget it ;-)

Guido has the right idea. Get a TV on the wall somewhere so the Italians are happy. Glad to see the last hint in the video of some stones coming to the project. I agree with you that 20 cm. lost on the wall is worth it. It is so nice to step into an older structure and feel some history. Crazy to enter and find a modern white box of a space. Keep going, everyone here is living the dream along with you!

So true about about Italians and food, I remember holidaying up in the mountains with my Mrs family and grandmother (god rest her soul), I would’ve just woken up and not even had my morning coffee and she would be talking about going to the market and talking about dinner, I would be like Nonna per piacere un caffè prima, dopo faccio quello che vuoi 😅by this point she couldn’t drive herself (she drove into her late 80’s), so it was a honour going to the market with her and her cooking, that was enough reason to take her anywhere 😁
Great project, will be watching all the way and most likely booking to stay there also 👍🏾

Guido's really impressive with his knowledge of the construction & structural complexities. Even his reasoning of the commercial need for the TV is true, but I can sense he loves his tv time 😊, but yes having a small TV might help with people booking extensive stays. Had to edit this in, Guido says Geckos and Scorpions in a perfect Australian accent! 😂
The next episode looks exciting, especially the war stories!!! And what's the news about the stones... Such a tease!!! Thanks again for the effort you put into your films!!! A recipe, lessons in Italian, landscape, cinematography etc. so much to enjoy & absorb in every episode... Fab Kylie!

Oh my my where to begin.
First let me just say. Guido is the absolute BEST!
I’m sure He wasn’t comfortable having to go through all the questions from us crazy UA-cam people, but he was so patient and Kind.
And his explanations and information he shared truly helped some of us (who live in the States) a glimpse and a understanding of life in Italy.
And Kylie you are Right It seems like it would be a headache or frustrating to deal with all the restrictions, but It has helped maintain and preserve Why We All Love Italy to begin with.
2nd )Thank you Kylie for the time you put into these videos with putting the translation on the bottom. I have always wanted to learn Italian and I love hearing the language.
    And 3rd.
I like the darker color window/Door trim. It doesn’t show the dirt so much. Less maintenance. And as Much As I would love wood. Because I am Like you Kylie, it’s about the feel of things, but if you won’t be able to be there at the property to keep up the maintenance, Then going with a material that last longer and less work and better cost would be the best choice. You could always decorate around them to give a nice feel.
But Ooh would I totally give up 20 cm of space to have that beautiful Rock wall 😁❤️
But that is just me. No matter what you guys do , you will make it beautiful and the best experience anyone could have.
Oh last but not least ...
what is the Recipe of what you made for lunch!!
Because That LOOKED SOOO GOOD! 👀 I wanted to climb through the tv.
If we come to visit and stay in the coop lol does it include a day of cooking with you? Lol just a thought.
Love your channel best of wishes .

We most of the time mix things when we visit bigger cities in Italy .Lunch at home because we start the day in the local market. But for dinner most of the time we just go to restaurants. You know just be part of the piazza walking around talking with local folks. When you go to bigger cities It means you want to be part of the crowd, the craziness. But if I want to spend my time chilling, explore the countryside I prefer just cooking ourselves and enjoy the quiet nature all day long. Waking up early when you can see the beautiful fog go to the market asking for a good and easy receipt while shopping the ingredients. And trust me those receipts never failed me ❤️

I have been living in Italy for almost 4 years. I live in a small village in Abruzzo. I have found renovation here means making things shiny and new. I feel as you do. I have had issues finding builders, tilers, etc who see it my way. I like using old things and coordinate them in the renovation. My downstairs bathroom has arches and very interesting angles and I had someone install awful tiles thinking new was beautiful. I was out of the country for 8 months when this happened. I now am going to try to do these things on my own if I can find tiles . You both have opened up my eyes and my senses. I love what you are doing with this little cottage. Anything you do will be a beautiful creative idea. Thank you. Bravo.

Window & door color - Now that I see Part 1, I think you should coordinate with the main house. Regarding the kitchen debate, when we visited Tuscany many years ago, the kitchen photos were what made us choose a villa west of Greve-in-Chianti. We ate at restaurants but we also cooked most dinners and breakfasts in the villa. Many of our best memories and photos are of 1) shopping for food and 2) the experience of "living" there, cooking and drinking wine. I remember the village cat that we could never entice into the villa. It preferred to sit in the doorway and watch us cook! We're American and yearn to visit Italy again. We had tickets for a concert at Teatro Antico di Taormina last summer that obviously was delayed and we hope it will happen in 2022. We will seek a similar place to stay in Sicily with a beautiful kitchen! It doesn't have to be huge or modern, just inviting.

But when Guido speaks English it just puts a smile on my face. Italian accents make every language better. I say this as a native German speaker whose accent makes every language worse... We travel the same way. The kitchen with a small dining table to eat on with a view is most valuable for me as someone who finds cooking romantic and a necessity to relax. When we reminisce of our past adventures those moments are most magical for my husband and I. In fact our day to day life is so busy I rarely have quality time to enjoy the process of cooking; although food is home made it’s often rushed. A vacation home with a lovely warm rustic kitchen with a view is a dream place to feed the soul. Your videos are a work of art for me I enjoy watching over and over ❤️

I adore the dreaming and planning stages of a project. Hashing out the details is like a drug. My husband and I have stood in our dream spaces and hashed out the flow and logistics of use so many times...just like this.
A kitchen where you can see out while standing and easy access to the terrace is an absolute must. I have food allergies and celiac disease and cannot eat out. To be safe and remain alive, I must prepare all my own food. In order to be able to travel at all, my holiday accommodations must have a place to prepare food - more than a microwave and coffee pot. Bonus is a way to wash small loads of clothes.
Here in N California, whose climate is similar, we chose aluminum clad wood windows. Warmth and charm of wood on the inside, protection and durability of aluminum on the outside. We LOVE them and they've been a great investment.
    Looking forward to this journey!

Was full of anticipation for the latest update on the renovation and it was absolutely delightful. My thoughts on the windows were that PVC does discolour (although these days you can paint it) and of course timber needs maintenance, but I had no idea that those green shutters were aluminium, so it would get my vote and I would go for a grey.
I had already had my evening meal but I was left drooling at what you cooked and I just adored the sound of the chopping and the cutting of the tomatoes; nothing beats a sharp knife!
I'm going into the weekend with a smile on my face thanks to you and thank you too for the subtitles. I love the way you move between the languages!

Oh Ann. Hope your work wasn’t too exhausting this week. I have to say, the green shutters so convince me too. Another stunning video - it is such a joy to see the Tuscan countryside. Personally, I love cooking on vacation. When I was on honeymoon, part of which was spent in an apartment in a Tuscan villa, we cooked. When I stay in Venice I adore shopping in the Rialto market. I do enjoy eating out too, but not every day. Although I'm ambivalent about a television I think it is good to have a small TV so that people have the option to use it. I prefer to watch movies on my laptop - they tend to be related to where I am visiting, for example, The Third Man in Vienna. I loved that you mentioned il Postino ... such a charming film ... and even more poignant that, talented, beautiful, Massimo Troisi died just a few hours after the main filming of the movie. It's getting late here in Qatar, and I'm up at silly o'clock tomorrow for a session with my personal trainer. But now I can go to sleep dreaming of Tuscany. Grazie. Buona notte Kylie & Guido 💐💕
