Missing Synopsis: George, who was tortured in a prisoner-of-war camp when his plans for escape were discovered, is now dead after five years in a mental home. His five fellow prisoners had sworn that if George died, they would kill the man who had betrayed him to the Germans. But which of them would do the killing? And how? (Internet Archive) Aired March 3rd, 1962 on BBC.
I remember listening to the original broadcast. I think it was at the end of 1965, or early 1966. Showing my age...
Keep them coming!
Wow! Awesome!!
👏🏻👏🏻
Brilliant. Thank you so much.
We all like these old dramas and this is certainly a good one. Sometimes the sound quality is worse than this one! But whats the point of complaining about it?? I am sure the uploader did their best! Be grateful, and be at peace with your own decision on whether or not to listen.
Thanks for listening and your understanding. We try to find the best version possible of these old shows.
Excellent 👏. Thank you.
Splendid
🇮🇪😂
I listen regularly, when away on holiday.
Your phone let's you download the episodes, when outside Europe and 1st world.
😜
Splendid
Thank you for uploading this play.
A Really Good One that- Uncle Chesterton !......Thanx a lot. Bit different that one-and then some. BTW....don't forget the Stone Skipping festival this weekend. See you then. Lottie sends all her love as well.
Well acted and certainly kept one interested until the very end. A nice alternative set of motives and possible murderers.
True, many of the dramas I lose track of but this one was an excellent drama 🎭
Good play, well thought out.
Yes a good one. Thank you.
The background noise was shockingly irritating but the play was SO good I HAD to listen to end! Thank you very much for uploading 👍👍
Enjoyed that, thanks.
Excellent listening.
Another brilliant play thank you.
One of my favorite's
One of my favourites too!
Oh this was so good! Thank you
Very good play
Great👍🌸🌻✌️
Great idea. Fizzle end
Taut plotting, likable characters (with one particularly noteworthy exception) some seriously tense moments and a lot of people doing the right thing (sort of) even if it is the wrong thing (sort of).
I don't think making likeable characters is good drama.
Good drama is making unlikable characters but people are still engaged.

Halfway through I wouldn't have been surprised if there was a third gun. Brilliant.
i realize it's kind of randomly asking but do anyone know of a good website to stream newly released tv shows online?
@Cesar Yehuda Flixportal =)
@Jordan Willie thank you, I signed up and it seems to work :D I really appreciate it !
@Cesar Yehuda you are welcome =)
L,
They do like their cups of tea and sandwiches!
I’m being obtuse but I don’t get the ending. Was it murder? If so, who did it? I don’t expect an answer as it will spoil it for anyone else who may wish to listen to this play. Perhaps I should have listened w full concentration. Thank you Chesterton Radio for all these downloads regardless. A treasure trove to enjoy, missing the point of one or two included.
Spoiler Alert! Do not read if you haven't listened to it all . . .
As the men are confessing but still a bit puzzled, George's father who is one of the senior policemen, admits that he did the murder. He intends to kill himself after confessing, but the detective inspector has removed the ammunition from the gun so he fails. But it is implied that there will be mercy for those involved. Mina, you might want to listen to the last 10 mins again.
@@bjackins1879 Ending was a bit muddled IMHO, everyone confessing then all owning the same type of gun.
I did hear the true perpetrator, and though "Who was this guy again?". The problem with audio I suppose since that guy didn't have a major part in the story. I could barely recall him.
@@bjackins1879 thank you. I had missed that the officer was George's father. Makes sense now :)
Such an interesting moral dilemma.
Cleverly plotted murder mystery. As good as any of Agathas '. - and more
believable than some of hers.! The tension is ratcheted up nicely . Detective
Inspector Probert is the Welsh Colombo - although annoyingly smug.
Welsh Colombo. Very true lol
Yes. I was thinking of Columbo as well!
're the date. This appeared in radio times february 1959.
So many spoofs of this type of mystery I kept thinking of them rather than the play....I wish the victim had a dog wot shot ím!

@@ayferbektas7034 The Genome website contains both the TV play version and this one - the BBC Home Service radio version broadcast three years later: genome.ch.bbc.co.uk/dbf99137394d4c109f3259e9854727ba
@@andrewmartin9030 Thank you. Sigh. I hadn't paid attention to that. I was just surprised.
It must be a different play under the same name because in the play, it is ,e.g., Dr. Madoc Price.
I get this fixed. 🙋♀️
the construction man .., Stettin ?
That was most enjoyable, I just wish I knew what year it was aired but I'm guessing the 1950's?
Hello Simon...that was a trickier question than I first thought. It aired on March 3 1962 but I can’t find on which radio station. Presumably the BBC. It also appeared as a television play on the BBC in 1959 when the murderer is described as a doctor rather than the job chosen in this version.👍
@@mikewilliams4499 Wow. Well thank you for taking the time to a) reply but more so b) for actually caring and getting off ur bum and checkin it out. I heartedly tip my hat to say thank you.
@@mikewilliams4499 definitely also produced by BBC Radio in Cardiff clear from the announcer’s accent and ability to pronounce Welsh names! I was sure Anne was played by Margaret John, so it was good that the recording included the cast. Many will remember her from Gavin and Stacey (neighbour, Doris).
I wouldn't find the person who supposedly committed the crime guilty. A jury of his peers would understand the extenuating circumstances and find him not guilty, I hope.
I hated the ending ! A quick death could never have been enough justice.
bittersweet story of revenge and solidarity and, ultimately, love.
Crackling noises in background. Poor sound quality. Good story
Why are the subtitles so full of weird errors ? Glad I do not need to read them.
UA-cam's own subtitle programme is poor even with a clear crisp vocal track free from background noises and sound effects.
It really doesn't have a chance with an old radio drama that has background noises and effects, accents and that wonderful old radio hiss and crackles you get.
They are auto generated by a program, not typed out to be replayed.
because its an automatic computer generated effort
Great story but sound quality very annoying.
interesting ending and story. but - towards the end - who wound be that stupid!?

Very bad sound prodution
