Brings back memories for me, I travelled this route many many times as a Goods Guard based at Falkland Yard, firstly on loose coupled and and then on fully fitted trains from 1974 until 1990. great days!
Thank heavens the G&SWR main line was never singled between Dumfries and Kilmarnock, which was threatened at one point in the early 1980s. And the singling between Gretna and Annan was reversed in the early 2000s. The double track now needs to be filly restored between Kilmarnock and Barrhead. A fine railway, photographed so well by Derek Cross on both steam and diesel days.
Could you id the varius station en route to Ayr.
